GM:Studio Standard Edition free for limited time

Post by BPzeBanshee »

If anyone wants to give GM:Studio a go now is the time. Download the free version and once you're in making a project go to Help > Update License and hit the middle option. Since everyone's jumping on the bandwagon for this the email send program's taking ages to get to my email account so don't be too surprised if you don't instantly receive an email (expect at least an hour wait, apparently).

What do you get out of this versus Free version? The key part is no stupid resource restriction (ie 10 sounds max, etc).
What do you get out of this versus pirating GM8.0 Pro like I have for the last 5 years? A version of GM that actually gets updated with less polish than ever, a more modern sound engine that isn't complete shit and more importantly dual Mac/Windows export.

If I can actually get anything going in this expect more modern GM builds from me in the near/distant future.

Make a project first to get you to the normal screen (like you're used to seeing in GM8) then find the Help menu on top. Update License will be there.

Make sure also that you're on the Beta updates channel.

This is pretty damn cool of them. :D I could almost stomach those ludicrous module prices if they did stuff like this on a regular basis.

Wait... What? Does it stay forever in my service if I grab it now?

After their slap-to-the-face GM8.1 support drop and horrifying episode with DRM-trickery I swore to move to Unity or something else after Final Boss gets done, but... Now I'm feeling somewhat conflicted.

The UI on this is horrendous even by IDE standards. How do I load pre-baked .gmspr files?

Load Sprite from the sprite editor (Sprite Properties) works for me. All of mine were exported from GM8, though... maybe that's a factor?

The slightly varying load/export options in different parts of the editor did always strike me as somewhat confusing, TBH.

I too hate the colourscheme of the new UI, it has some skin options (you can also make your own) and I switched it to the GM8 version straight-away. Combined with non-Aero Desktop it looks something like this (which is how I like it):http://i.imgur.com/pmORp.jpg

GMSPR support got nuked IIRC, at least in terms of loading them from within game code, but Load Sprite should be able to open them still in some form. I'll check tonight.

As for license, no idea how long it lasts but I assume since it's a matter of license key enter > full version then you're with that version for life. It's just the current process of getting that license key is I assume the limited time part.

EDIT: Damn that image is larger than I thought. Put it to a URL.
Anyway, you can still open a GMSPR and make it an internal sprite by simply creating a sprite and going Load Sprite as Rozyrg said. I tested myself and imported one of the GMOSSE external sprites that way.

Does anyone know if Vita support is forthcoming in terms of a GM export?

AFAIK They tried PS3 export a while ago and got shot down by Sony. Seems unlikely providing Sony stays hostile to indie development.

EDIT: And before Friendly chips in, when I say hostile I mean "we dont distribute our SDK without agreements/publishers/etc therefore no random computer guy can just put stuff on our PS Vita".

I guess the best thing to do is just learn games development, and make a really good game.

If the game is good, it shouldn't be that difficult to get the game ported across to Vita.

YoYoGames themselves have a few basic tutorials, the 1945 one is okay for the most part and gets you used to the idea of variables. If you can find any that teach straight GML rather than the Drag n Drop interface, you're better off with that as in my experience D&D is a inhibitor later on.
