Godzilla fans -- a question

Post by Edmond Dantes »

I'm thinking of saving up for a few months and buying the Godzilla Final Box (which occasionally shows up on eBay, usually for around $600).

Since these DVDs don't have English subtitles, where can I download SRT files? Particularly for movies that never had an uncut English release (like King Kong vs Godzilla).

I'm only looking for subtitle files, not illegal downloads of the actual movies. Downloading subtitles isn't against copyright law unless they're ripped from DVDs (and some of the Region 1 DVDs use dubtitles so I don't want their subs anyway).

I admit that looks like a cool set, but given that you can get most of the movies in that set separately for a lot cheaper than $600, and many with subtitles or dubbed, I'd just urge you to reconsider--unless of course you just have crazy amounts of money to throw away.

I usually go to opensubtitles.org - for movies in general, not specifically Godzilla ones - but the quality can vary pretty wildly.

You can PM me. I have all the subs for the boxset collected here with me. Bought the box back when it was released. Beautiful set, although in the meantime BDs of the movies have been released in Japan.

If you want DVDs rather than blu-rays then it would be a lot cheaper to buy the region 4 Australian releases from Madman. They're mostly comparible in quality to the Japanese releases, except that they're subtitled and are collected into a few ridiculously cheap box sets. Here's an Australian online store that I've used a few times: http://www.ezydvd.com.au/search?q=godzilla&t=dvd

There are a few movies you'd need to source elsewhere. For Godzilla Raids Again and Ghidorah the Three-Headed Monster I recommend the R1 Classic Media releases. There's also an R1 release of Biollante now. For Return of Godzilla (84), there's an English subbed R3 Hong Kong release from Universe Laser and Video (it is legit). Unfortunately, as you've mentioned, there's no high quality English release of KKvG.

For those who care the Criterion Collection did a DVD/Blu-Ray release of the first Godzilla film. Haven't watched my Blu-Ray as of yet but I expect noting less from Criterion.

Admittedly my course of action isn't set in stone--I may decide to say "fuck it" to the Final Box and get the movies via the sources cited in this thread. Just seems like it would be a neat way to get them all in one fell swoop.

KKvsG I'll obviously have to get from Japan tho.

And yeah I'm planning on grabbing the Criterion release of Gojira 1954 (despite already owning the Classic Media release). It's one of the best movies ever made, so of course that justifies double-dipping, especially since Classic Media chose a horrible font for their subtitles.

Bumping for question...

Is there a subtitle track available for Mothra vs Godzilla that translates the Mothra song? The official Classic Media DVD does NOT translate this (except for the part where the twins say Mothra's name).

Sony's DVD of Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla doesn't translate the King Caesar song either.

While this question is open i've been after the entire Godzilla collection for some time but apparently it's not easily available in region 2 (UK) if at all. Does anyone know where the hell I can get them in my native region? bootleg or not.
The universe is neither hostile nor friendly, simply indifferent.

Even without my umbillical cable attached I still have over 12,000 plates of fortified armour AND I have my AT Field! There's NO WAY I can lose!!

The only Godzilla DVDs available in the UK are the 1954 original, Roland Emmerich's 1998 remake of The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms, and the butchered American version of King Kong vs Godzilla. Japanese DVDs are region 2, but won't be subtitled. If you want all the Godzilla movies, your best bet is to buy a region-free DVD player for about £30 on Amazon and import them from the places I mentioned in my previous post.

Know where to get those Universe Laser titles anymore? Certainly not a quality company, but they are usually cheap. Can't seem to get a hold of Godzilla Returns or some of the 90s titles anymore. I'll take shit subtitles over the Columbi Tri-Star R1 releases any day.

I had a quick look around. Unfortunately, they seem to have gone out of print.

Damn, yeah, the HK source that used to carry them that I order through has taken most of theirs off at this point as well. Shucks.

First trailer where I'm actually thinking this might be a really good film. Like the original film, there are a lot of good themes to touch on here instead of just a giant monster movie. The American Godzilla failed because it lacked anything to relate to (even Godzilla was ultimately unlikable.) Everything in the trailer suggests Godzilla is going to become a new analogy to man-made and natural disasters; force of nature personified. Even if it isn't a great film, it looks like the makers of it understand what Godzilla is supposed to be.

Whenever I see these latter-day Godzilla movies, I think of that scene where Freddy Kreuger kills a kid using a Nintendo.

The original Godzilla is a classic Horror movie that has long since descended into the smelliest depths of cheese.
Two working class dudes, one black one white, just baked a tray of ten cookies together.

An oligarch walks in and grabs nine cookies for himself.

Then he says to the white dude "Watch out for that black dude, he wants a piece of your cookie!"

Besides the original Elm Street film, Freddy has been making wise cracks and tongue-in-cheek kills since the second film. Part of the appeal. Same goes with Godzilla after the second film. They tried to make a serious sequel, but wound up realizing that monsters beating the shit out of each other is pretty fun stuff. You can't really make 28 films with commentary on nuclear warfare. I'd say only the later Millennium era stuff is guilty of taking itself too serious, which is why it lacks in comparison to everything before it.

More kaiju blu-rays inbound. Universal are releasing King Kong vs Godzilla and King Kong Escapes on 1st April (unfortunately, only the US cuts again). Then Mill Creek are released all the Showa Gamera movies across two blu-ray sets on 29th April.

The above are both confirmed releases. There's also an unconfirmed rumour that Sony will be releasing four blu-ray two-packs of some of the heisei and millennium Godzilla movies on 6th May.

Yeah, I didn't post those for that reason :(. Such a bummer! I'd kill for a Kong uncut!

Wow, that's a nice package for the Millcreek set. Now, hopefully the cuts are nice and with good subs. I've got the Shout! Factory stuff at this point, but it's a much pricier investment.
