11th Annual Top 25 Pre-Discussion Thread

Post by Nifty »

Yes hi hello it's looped back to that time of year again. If I did have any more definite plans to tweak the voting I can't remember them, aside from re-evaluating every build/port of a game as they come up. That leads along to my plans for the rest of the year then:

Lists for all the things! sort of
I have a few categories that I feel to be worth doing, probably on a seasonal basis:
-Retro arcade (Will contain multiple votes in one for various historical eras)
-Doujin
-Console/Home computer/Other things that aren't one of the above
-Company (This will probably fit in between one of the others)
Anything more than that will be pushing the limits of both my time and personal interest, plus I don't want to elicit voting burnout by throwing in ever more samey categories. Even then I don't know if I'll want to run them all next year.

I'll initiate discussion for these when I intend for them to start, so it's probably better to stick to discussion of the main list now, if there's even much to say. In any case I plan to start up voting in a few days :)

Sure. I think it's finally time to run a campaign to get Apidya nearer to the honorable mentions. Everyone loves bees, right?

I can almost get behind an Apidya bandwagon, but dear god does playing it on emulator stink.

If RayForce and Darius Gaiden get snubbed again, it will be definitive proof that this forum lacks taste.

I think I'm going to be sick if Garegga wins top spot, that belongs to Raiden DX. Anyone want to bet that it probably will anyway?

I'd like to see cave, raizing, and touhou excused from the ranking altogether. It would be far more interesting to see how seibu, psikyo, konami, irem, capcom, and takumi stack up against each other... and to see the hipsters voting for NMK games

Meh... That would kind of defeat the purpose of trying to determine the most popular, imo.

Or you could just exclude them from the final results and see what's left.

No idea what RayForce is, but Darius Gaiden is either grossly overrated or severely underrated depending on who you ask, with little middle ground inbetween. (And of course if you ask MathU he'll go on a rant about autofire)

An honest mistake seeing as how confusing the titles can be.

Rayforce (japanese arcade)

=

Gunlock (european arcade)

=

Layer Section (japanese saturn)

=

Galactic Attack (north america saturn)

I told myself I would venture out since the last poll and play more non-cave/raizing games, but I failed and got addicted to my new raizing/cave PCBs :(

this year I'll have to finally put my money where my mouth is and try out a few psikyo games.

The Cave dominance is fairly annoying...I like a few Cave games quite a bit but the voting records lately seem a bit overdone and unrealistic. I'm fairly new but I've played enough shmups to know that something eerie is going on with this site when it comes to Cave. No problem with them being the no.1 producer of top-quality of shmups...but from playing several of them I can certainly disagree with the level of dominance.

However...I must say I can't wait to figure out my top 25 and see the final results of this year's overall edition...it's a great tradition imo. Appreciate old-school too. Try em out!

Might as well head straight for Dragon Blaze, which has the best proximal attack I can think of. Plus, I think it's their best looking game. Gunbird 2 is also swell, but a bit less awesome overall. E.g. DB's tech bonus is much better than GB 2's hidden-gem-head thingy, which requires memorization. And then Gunbird 2 involves some sort of sexual perversion or other, right? I mostly skip the dialogue, but I think there's something a bit...off.
