Custom Cables - Your Materials and Methods

Post by CkRtech »

Hey all -

I am considering going the route of making some of my own cables for my video game consoles after having collecting many cables of varying quality as well as having to modify existing cables (RGB SCART) in order to get a decent picture for the SNES (a possible adventure in itself).

I was curious what type of cabling/wires you guys like to use for your custom cables as well as what suppliers you use. I am personally in the States, but don't let that stop you from sharing suppliers you recommend.

I think the most important thing here is the use of shielded cables. I humbly admit that I have not terminated AV cabling using shielded conductors before. I am especially curious how it is done on some of these mini-dins.

I guess it depends on what display you will use. My monitor takes 15khz and 31khz through BNC. I have a 4-way SCART switcher with VGA connector on the end, and that connects to my monitor with a VGA to BNC cable.

SCART RGB cables are the most readily available (and cheap) cables, so perhaps start there if you are a beginer.

Good luck!

Ahh. Sorry.

I didn't mean for it to seem like I was starting as a beginner, or that I didn't already have tons of different cables. Most of my external cable work has been small modifications such as adding caps or resistors to a line. Most of my general mod work as been internal (building circuits, etc).

I was just wondering what sort of cabling guys like to use for making their own external cabling. For instance - do you have a special type of shielded cable you like to order, or do you just pick up some high quality VGA cable, cut the ends off, and go from there?
