Trisector (iOS-Universal)

Post by Hal1 »

Introducing the iOS shmup with the smallest file size (I think): TRISECTOR!

Trisector is a one-man game project by Jesse Ozog (aka Smash/Riot). Trisector features three training and nine story levels that each can be completed in under two minutes, the time on a level is counted, bullet hell courtesy of your enemies, collision with terrain = death, great techno BGM, and many more. Trisector is a fast-paced side-scrolling bullet hell shooter developed using a custom engine, a few programs, and with a sense of simplicity.
SmashRiot wrote:Features:
• Universal App for iPad, iPhone, and iPod

• 9 bullet filled Story levels

• A Hard Mode toggle for an additional challenge and larger score multipliers
• Dynamic music system that changes for each level and situation
• Comprehensive in game help and information
• Retina ready with high resolution graphics and dynamic lighting
• Game Center support with Score and Time Leaderboards and Achievements

Need to add relative-touch controls in my opinion.
Tilt and virtual joystick make this a skip for me, as I can't play using these control options.
At least I have trouble with them.

I'm the developer for Trisector and I'm glad you all found my little indie shmup.

I started making Trisector in Sept 2012 as an after hours project with no budget, and released it to the App Store this past June. I'm actively working on trying to improve Trisector with level tuning, new mechanics, features, graphics, etc. and plan on releasing regular updates.

Trisector v1.0.2 update was recently approved and includes Relative Touch control options, improved explosions and particle effects, new random drops, level tuning, and improved enemy density. The update also improves the performance and graphical effects on the older devices. The Relative Touch control options (right or left side) are super responsive and rival the Tilt option at the same sensitivity settings.

I'm currently working on a v1.0.3 update that currently includes scoring and high score leaderboards, a new Burst+ power-up, dynamic environment lighting, and improved tutorial levels.

Here are a few promo codes for v1.0.2 (iOS Universal) if you would like to check it out.

Thank you SmashRiot for joining this forum to remind about updates for your game Trisector! Appreciated!
SmashRiot wrote:Currently there is only one combined High Score Leaderboard due to a game center limitation of 25 total Leaderboards.
How about Facebook support to overcome this limitation?

Original post overhauled.

And now, what are your impressions about this super underrated gem (that has not yet currently reviewed by the major iOS game review sites)?

Thanks for finding my little indie shmup Hal! It hasn't seen too much attention or play outside my circle and I'm excited to see how people do in it.

The first shmup I ever played was Gradius for the NES in the mid 80s. Most likely because I played Gradius a TON, it's shmup style has always been my favorite and Trisector was definitely inspired by it.

I set out to make a shmup that had a good mix of cave navigation and a lot of bullets. The speed mechanic was designed to allow the players to set the pace they wanted to play at, since speed definitely ups the game's difficulty. The score multiplier is based on speed and difficulty mode, so the faster the ship is going the bigger the score.

Trisector is the first real game that I've released to the public and I'm still learning a bunch of lessons from it. For example, the current version has tightened up tutorials from previous versions, but I'm still losing people after the first or second tutorial, so something has to be done there. My test group was a mix of hard core and casual gamers that I knew and both groups were confused on the energy and shield mechanics. That confusion was the push for tutorials in the first place. Maybe a single help screen or two the first time you play and then onto the destruction. It's something I'm working on improving for the next release.

re: leaderboards. I was a bit disappointed when I readied the 1.0.3 update for submission and found that the game center leaderboards were capped to 25. I don't have any plans to add FB etc to it as there is an elegant solution on the horizon. In the mean time, I might hack together some informal leaderboards on my site.

re: Android port. Since I'm a single dev, I have to put my time into making the iOS version awesome first. I did recently run across apportable, which is a framework for porting from iOS to Android, so porting may be possible. It's just far down on my todo list at the moment.

I wrote up a few articles on the Making of Trisector if anyone is interested in seeing how the game was made.

Thanks again for posting my little indie shmup here. I'd appreciate any feedback on feedback on difficulty, etc.

astroid, it should run great on your iPod Touch 5. Please try a reboot of your device and a reinstall of the app if you haven't already.

I checked apple's crash reporter and I don't see any crashes reported. I haven't had a known crash bug in a while now so I'm very interested in finding out the cause if you are willing to help. Also, may I have you PM me if your device is jailbroken or not? Thanks!

A crash bug was identified today related to number format localizations. If you are experiencing a crash after clicking Play, try this workaround: Settings App -> General -> International -> Region Format: Change to United States.

A fix has been implemented for v1.0.7 and will be submitted to apple after testing. I expect the patch to be available later this week.
