Not really. It's a mission based one. Try the game, you won't regret it. Though I think the original Colony Wars was the best.

Never played a CW game but always heard great things. I've heard CW: Vengeance was hard as balls.

How are the PS1 Wing Commander games, BTW? The original Wing Commander got a SNES port, but I don't know how accurate to the PC original it is.

I've played the first Colony Wars, and it rocks! :D Psygnosis really did some great development work on the PS1! And yeah, I've read nothing but good thngs about all the games in the Colony Wars series. I would make sure you get a complete copy with instructions, though.

colony wars is pure gold, übertight gameplay!

PSX wing commander games are ok, theyre fun for the story sequences, but gameplay wise the games have a couple of flaws, still totally playable but the space battles can get kinda tedious, same with the SNES port.

The second colony wars is pretty good. Part 3 was a disappointment, avoid it.

from what i've read, colon wars red sun sounds like it's an open universe, and you're a mercenary where you can follow the set mission or do side missions to build up your weapons and your ship. to me this sounds like Freelancer, Wing Commander Privateer , etc. isn't that right, or are there any other games for the PS1 that are more open than CW red sun?

No... Red Sun is not free-roaming like Elite/Privateer/etc, it simply offers a few optional side-missions at each chapter in the story. I can't think of anything Elite-like on the PS1...

its alot less linear than the other CV games as in you can choose which missions to do and your actions change the games progress and storyline(as i can remember anyways, years ago i played this so my memory might be a little fussy), however its nowhere near as free-roaming as elite.

still a great game :)
