Back in the old forums somebody brought to our attention Salamander DVDs on eBay. Bootlegs, of course. I bought mine back then, it's your below-average 80's space anime, only with a Gradius theme.
Still, it's fun to watch it every now and then, especially after playing the games. That way you can play "recognize the enemy" while watching the DVD.
The english subtitles are pretty good too. However, for a few lines they're missing altogether.

No matter how good a game is, somebody will always hate it. No matter how bad a game is, somebody will always love it.

I saw all three OAV's 7 years ago or so, they're okay, I remember it as pretty generic space opera stuff with a Salamander/Gradius theme.
Tries a bit too hard to feature recognizable elements in the story, Moai heads for example.
The battle scenes aren't very impressive compared to those of Macross, though.
Still neat.

Hey "somebody" has got a name you know!Ghegs wrote:Back in the old forums somebody brought to our attention Salamander DVDs on eBay. Bootlegs, of course.

Also if I remember correctly there wasn't consensus on the DVD's being bootlegs. Some people who seemd to be in the know claimed that the publisher had the official Konami license, but only for the "rest of Asia" market.
Still silly though how the episode 2 on the disc actually was episode 3 and vice versa.
About the quality: still love how the original music is used in the animes.
Especially when the Salamander stage 1 music kicks in.

Barroom hero!
