IMPOVERISHED STARFIGHTER [ld28]

Post by Danbo »

Hey yall! I thought I'd crank out a shump for the 72-hour ludum dare jam and this is what I came up with

It's BASICALLY an attempt to make a euroshmup I could enjoy. I like shumps, I like the idea of building my own ship, why not have my cake and eat it! To avoid power creep, you only get a dollar to build the ship with.

Everyone says it's too hard so it's probably super easy. You can have multiple primary weapons. The plasma gun sucks!! Don't use it on its own unless you're a real tough guy. Balance is generally not great. Do your best!!

The graphs are from tyrian and the music I got from modarchive, full credits are in the readme.

I'm super pleased with what I managed to cobble together in 72 hours, though the game is obviously far from perfect. I'm probably going to take the concept and run with it a little more. Let me know what u think

It's a pretty dope game. If you balanced it out a bit, I think it would make an excellent game. It reminds me of something off of the Amiga in the 1990's.
And it's not hard at all. I only lost because my computer would freeze the image, but the game would still be running, so I can't see jack, but then I get hit (note: my computer lol).

Played it a few times, eventually won. I didn't really like it that much, but it's decent for 72 hours (:

I thought the build-your-own-ship system was fairly cool. I like the idea of secondary weapons, but the flamethrower seems almost entirely useless, at least at level 1, and the rockets didn't work for some reason :/

It seems kind of uninteresting that there's only one kind of enemy bullet.

I was kinda disappointed by the lack of a focus button and hitbox indicator. Enemy bullets pass behind your ship, rather than in front, which makes it even harder to judge.

I'm not a fan of ordinary panicbombs, since I /really/ can't stand punishing systems like that, but I'm not going to complain since at least you keep your bombs on death, unlike most games.

The music is nice ^.^ Where'd you get it?

The boss death animations went on way too long -- it takes like 20 seconds after dying for the Stage 2 boss to explode. Also, I found a possible bug: bosses' contact damage remains during their death animation.

The bosses themselves were okay. A lot of patterns lasted a little too long, and some were a bit too random, but it's not a big issue.
