Raiden or 2?

Post by sjewkestheloon »

Ok i got raiden project and fully expected to love raiden 2 and ignore the first one but instead i find the second to be annoyingly difficult due to fast bullets and the slowest ship ever. raiden however doesn't seem to suffer from this problem and seems pretty managable. this may not be my final judgement however as i can potentially see raiden 2 as something to continue playing when i'm done with the first.

opinions everyone?

oh and no dx

You need a 'both' option, because both games are of course classic and have their own pros and cons.

I personally paly Raiden more, since it got one less weapon color which make it easiler to power up.

Until I become more familar with the games, I cannot tell which one is better.

A decade ago, the arcade where I lived had Raiden II. I almost exclusively played 2D beat 'em ups back then, being full of raging hormones and those games having incredibly sexy panty-flashing girls in them might have something to do with it...

Raiden II blew my mind - the incredible attention to detail, the feel, the sound effects, the timeless graphics, the challenge - I always had a loving relationship with shootie games before, but not quite at the same level.

Then I went on vacation somewhere in France, which also had an arcade, with Raiden - for some reason I didn't immediately notice that it was the prequel, but I loved it almost as much - it more or less had the same enemies, the same scenery, the same weapons and the same general feel - but not as advanced. One thing which I definately prefer about the original Raiden is the music - partially synthesized, with a punchy, crunchy bassline, it really had a driving effect. Raiden II's soundtrack on the other hand is tinny and annoying, sounding pretty much as being done on a cheap Casio keyboard.

Rant over.

I always loved playing Raiden, and when Raiden 2 came out I was made up but once I got round to playing it I just didn't quite find it as much fun as the first one.

I don't play either: Raiden DX is so deep I don't really need any other Raiden game.

Aye.

And the ship too slow? I dunno, I'm sure it's 100% possible to clear the game on a credit and probably even a life.

I prefer Raiden 2. I think it's because I feel it's a bit more polished & I like the 3rd weapon choice.

Raiden II but given the choice I'd say Raiden DX

I just enjoyed it alot more, it just seems more engauging.

Although I dont particually like the laser weapon.

Raiden II was my first real shmup, way back then. I never got past level 2, but I'll be damned if I didn't have a fun time with it. The graphics blew my mind away, the attention to detail, the scrapnel explosions whenever anything blows up -- all of it was amazing. This was the game that introduced me to the genre, so above nearly every other shmup it holds a special place to me.

Earlier this summer, after searching for The Raiden Project for a couple of years, I finally found a complete one for $15 at GameStop. I was kinda worried how the PS1 would handle Raiden II, since I remember it looking so fantastic I didn't know if the PS1 could handle it.

Anyways, color me impressed, because the game is nigh perfect. What impresses me even more is simply how gorgeous it looks, even today. I was literally wowed by how timeless this classics really is. Of course, I finally beat it, and despite the lameness of the last boss, it's still one of the greatest shmups in my book. Raizing must have agreed with me, because I can see some influences from Raiden in their games, especially Battle Garegga.

As for Raiden 1, personally I never played it in the arcade so it holds no nostalgic value for me. It's good, but Raiden II blows it out of the water.

For the record, just what is Raiden DX? A remix of Raiden II or what?

DX adds a Medaling system based on the time that it is on the screen. Pick it up immediatley for full base points (500, 3000, or 10,000 for a miclus) that longer it stays on the screen the less points you get. Or play risky and let it fade completely and then it will flash for about on frame for a super bonus (50K for a miclus)!

It also has positional secrets, whereas if you are in the right spot at the right time you can blow things up the come out of the ground for big points.

Three different courses with different mappings complete the roundup.

all that said Raiden 2 absolutely owns. By far the best Boss Music ever on original, IMO. I am strangely better at Raiden 1 though.... :?

i see raiden 2 absolutely owning at the minute.. interesting.

these games can be really damn frustrating though. bloody sniper bullets etc. oh and for the slow ship yeah i know it seems very possible to one life this thing but it's just i've been playing a lot of psikyo games and to go from the flying pancake to this is like having your legs cut off...

as for dx i think i'll get it for christmas. just a couple of questions, does it work with psxchange ver. 2 and where the hell can i get it from for a reasonable price??

Seems a bit ironic that official documentation calls it the "Raiden Supersonic Attack Fighter", heh.

Perhaps it's bogged down by having to carry zillions of rounds of ammo?

I got a new copy for $30 on EBay this year, but it wasn't marked as DX. Get familiar with the look of the cover because it will sometimes get mislabeled on EBay. Here's what the cover looks like:

Great Christmas present. Good luck looking for it!

I *ahem* 'picked up' Raiden Project this morning (ISO yes), I had played a musicless Raiden II PC, but the PSX version pretty much kicked my butt, it seems almost like the first game, but I haven't gotten far enough into Raiden II to see the best stuff.

But from what little I saw of it, it seemed a tad faster than the original.

Next up on the 'ISO' docket is Raiden DX, I wanna see what the fuss is all about over this game. :)

Another one for Raiden 2 here, but it's really for DX (I've actually got Raiden 1 and DX on PCBs, and I'm trying to acquire a proper Raiden 2 instead of the "New" version one I have, in addition to Raiden Fighters 1 and 2 (yeah, I know, stuck in a rut...)

boo to raiden...

i now seem to consistently get to stage 3 but i seem to get slapped down in one foul swoop on entry. i think i'm going to play this game as a one life thing grdius style as the bloody pea shooter is terrible.

Shienryu is good fun, but do you really think it compares to Raiden DX? The latter seems to me a strong candidate for best shmup on PS1, better even than Zanac Neo and DDP.
Shienryu=shallow fun
Raiden DX=deep fun

The first time i ever played Raiden was at a laundromat in Tennesse my family stopped at while on vacation. The screen was all super-faded and you could barley see anything - but i knew i loved that game. I tracked it down for the PS when DX came out - i wouldn't play Raiden Trad because i heard it was lackluster.

Eventually i ended up playing it on the Jag...

All in all though i'd have to vote Raiden II as best of those choices - but series wise i'd have to say that Viper Phase 1 creams all others.

If you get a chance to play the Raiden Fighters series then give it a go - they are some of the best Shmups ever made.

Raiden is actually my third favorite series right below Gradius and R-Type - that says alot considering it's a vert shmup. These games are pure fun and there's no bad mood that can stop it.

raiden gets more playtime from me than raiden 2 currently, mainly because i don't have a fully working raiden 2 pcb.

Raiden 2 got me into shooters basically, when I rented it with a ps1 (raiden project was one of the launch titles).

Raiden has awesome music, well so does Raiden 2, but Raiden has a particular feel to it, similar to how I like the music in Sky Shark, etc..

Raiden seems slightly easier than 2, and more addicting. My vote goes to Raiden right now, but I still like both of them.

Raiden DX >>> Raiden >> Raiden III > Raiden II

Or something like that.
