So, Youtube is basically committing suicide at this point.

Post by cave hermit »

First, they make you register on Google plus to comment (nobody likes google plus, and people will only like it less if you keep forcing it on us!), and now they have an automated copyright flag system. Honestly, I didn't care until: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U8kIrsw8-io

Classic game room has left Youtube. Apparently all the other gaming channels I watch regularly will be following Mark. Either Google cuts this shit out, or Youtube is going to turn into a ghost town.

isn't the issue just that people are mad they won't be paid anymore for doing shit nobody should ever be getting paid for? as far as i can tell it's not like youtube is arbitrarily deleting videos.

Good lord. I haven't been using it much lately, but good god, I can certainly tell it's turning into a nightmare. What did you have on there that deserved to be permanently disabled?

VHS mixtapes, and privately-listed documentaries about Japan. Nothing was monetized. Oh well - I still have hard copies of everything. Never trust the cloud! This is exactly what happens when you trust digital copies of your programs / games / videos to be taken care of by these corporations that don't give a goddam about your time / money / effort.

"Don't Be Evil", eh?

That being said, I don't really "follow" anyone on YouTube but I do watch CGR and other such stuff from time to time: has that particular outfit said where it'll be setting up shop next?

My stuff seems to have survived so far, but I think I'd better download everything I don't have backed up just in case.

The thing that gets me is that I've been hearing a lot about stuff like Lets Plays getting pulled down, but I'm not having any trouble finding full copyrighted albums clearly labelled as such (and running ads!).

That's pretty scary, considering it probably wasn't really mainstream stuff compared to all these current video game vloggers/commentaters/LPers. And I can still type the words full movie in search and watch said full movies. I really don't understand this stuff.

As long as I can keep watching:

Game grumps
Retsupurae
Ashens
Jontron
Egoraptor
PBG

I'll stick with Youtube. However once they're gone, Youtube is dead to me. The only accounts I have for Youtube were automatically generated when I signed up for gmail. For some reason somebody keeps hacking into my account just to watch really REALLY fucked up softcore porn with my Youtube history. Google hasn't provided me with any way to contact them about this. Fuck mega corporations.

Youtube will totally get rid of them soon. Well, maybe not Ashens.

Or, more likely, they'll probably leave of their own will. To where, I dunno. What's a good not-Youtube video upload site?
Come check out my website, I guess. Random stuff I've worked on over the last two decades.

Ya gotta flip horizontal orientation when you hijack entire paid movies. YouTube JP don't fuck around, guy.

Youtube is a fun game. You need to earn better combo ban messages, like me!

Oddly, despite having more copyright infringements than this entire forum combined, I only received this one major new ban from this new bot so far. I'm gonna dispute the copyright omega-claim again. This should end GREAT.

Welp, looks like my super obscure shit still hasn't merited the banhammer yet. Goin' strong still!

I was kind of hoping they would ban that jackass Homerspy who copied my one upload and got tons of views for it though (and probably monetized it too).

I think it's a really dumb move. You'd think the game publishers would appreciate getting what basically amounts to free advertising. I'm surprised they aren't doing more to encourage it actually.

Does making youtube videos really pay that well?

Youtube videos only pays well for partners who have loads of marketing potential. Mark from Classic Game Room had a lot of subscribers and regular viewers, which in turn increased his potential to act as a vector for Google advertising, which in turn paid him. Youtube cornerstones like smosh and Fred get the lion's share of that pie though.

An average guy with, say, 100 subscribers isn't going to make anything even on 400 monetized videos.

Man, those guys. >:( And I thought I was safe from it. Last year, I only posted a short clip of that tokusatsu video, and Toei is not giving a damn about it and shot my account with a copyright strike. Eventually, I left that account soon enough and shifted to a new one.

Don't really follow him, but he's got a point. Youtubing ain't at all that dissimilar to writing for internet news outlets, or even seeing presenters on TV.

I was thinking of starting up my own Youtube channel. Glad I never went down that rabbit hole.

This was inevitable as Youtube became ever more commercialized, mainstreamed, and integrated into all sorts of platforms and devices. I saw it brewing as far back as 2008, when they first started cracking down on the rampant unauthorized full uploads of TV and anime episodes. There's inevitably going to be a repeat of the grand Myspace to Facebook migration, whenever a better alternative site emerges that's popular enough and can serve the same monetization needs.

But there isn't a better alternative right now.

With regards to MySpace, I think most musicians etc realised that it doesn't "pay" to depend so heavily on one system.

Better alternative:

Use YouTube as a gateway to your content, maybe. Host it yourself - data isn't free but it's much MUCH better than it used to be. Discussion? Just set things up in a Forum system.

Not pretty, but it could get the job done.

"We recently enabled Content ID scanning on channels identified as affiliates of [Multi Channel Networks]," the YouTube representative said. "This has resulted in new copyright claims for some users, based on policies set by the relevant content owners. As ever, channel owners can easily dispute Content ID claims if they believe those claims are invalid."
Bullshit. I hadn't logged into my account for the last few days (maybe 3?) and I had zero copyright claims. I checked in at the sight of this thread, and my account was disabled with a notice going to my gmail account (that I never use, and only have because Youtube is owned by the same shitty company) over some videos that have been up in my channel for more than three years. Three copyright strikes and you're out, and everything is gone since they all hit at once. No recourse and all private family videos are gone as well.
