Dualshock 4 for SHMUPS on PC

Post by Jforce »

Hi everyone! What do you think about Dualshock 4? Is it good for PC shmuping? I'd like to change controller because I gave my XBOX360 controller for Windows to my Dad.

From what I've heard, it's the ultimate. Though Xpadder or Joy2Key may be needed for now...

I never played with Dualshock 3 or below so I'm interested in ergonomic of Dualshock 4 because Left Analog Stick have different position comparing with XBOX 360 Controller. Some people complain that they feel tensity in the left palm.

What can you say about gamepad battery? How long Dualshock 4 can work without recharging and how fast it's charging from usb port? As I know vibration and sensor panel aren't working with Windows, is it true?

battery life aint as good as other controllers, due in part to a ridiculously bright led being ran in there (heavily diffused) and the touchpad. It recharges fast though.

Also, if perchance you do need xinput support, this fellow is working on a nice wrapper for the ds4, with touchpad support http://forums.pcsx2.net/Thread-DS4-To-XInput-Wrapper

DS4 still bluetooth?

John Carmack recently measured pad latency on Windows and Android and Bluetooth always came out worse. Best was wired 360 pad with around 8ms lag.

You got a source for that? I would like to read the results.

Interesting:
On an unloaded Windows 7 system with the compositing Aero desktop interface disabled, a gaming mouse dragging a window displayed on a 180 hz CRT monitor can show a response on screen in the same 240 fps video frame that the mouse was seen to first move, demonstrating an end to end latency below four milliseconds. Many systems need to cooperate for this to happen: The mouse updates 500 times a second, with no filtering or buffering. The operating system immediately processes the update, and immediately performs GPU accelerated rendering directly to the framebuffer without any page flipping or buffering. The display accepts the video signal with no buffering or processing, and the screen phosphors begin emitting new photons within microseconds.
That's also from John Carmack, on a different topic. http://www.altdevblogaday.com/2013/02/2 ... trategies/ and http://oculusrift-blog.com/john-carmack ... tency/682/

Something for the console wars thread, maybe?

Okay, let's see if I can finally find what you're looking for - yes! Finally!

Just measured 40 milliseconds of latency from a wired joypad on Android, and twice that on a bluetooth one. On Windows, wired is < 8 ms.
furthermore -
@kathampy I timed a Razor mouse at less than 4ms with 500 hz update. Not sure how much less than 4ms.
@fraganator303 @benheck I had to leave mine [Ben Heck lag timer] at Id. I was definitely thinking about it as I was trying to determine the button frame press.
N.B. for bucko: I couldn't understand you because there were no commas in your summary.

Where the hell is byuu getting his latency figures from? How much of that is really down to the software path? Are people using best practices, or not? A paragraph near the bottom of the Oculus Rift blog mentions increased latency from "actions that require simulation state changes."

There's also an interesting link on latency in VR from Michael Abrash, that opens with a tidbit about hacking IBM's 0x13 256-color mode:
