I'd bet that Minecraft has sold more than every shump from the last 15 years combined.

Yeah, 360 is pretty much a niche console at best in Japan ever since launch. Only real bumps it got was when stuff like Blue Dragon came out, but it was never really enough.

Does anyone recall how many copies of the Cave Collection were printed altogether? Even assuming that every single copy made was sold, that fact that a limited-run product was one of the top sellers for the year provides another ready-made "yeesh" moment for 360 sales in Japan, in case we needed one.

Just speculation, but maybe amazon's algorithm for determing "best selling" isn't simply based on sheer numbers sold - but maybe a combination of that and the frequency of sales of an item/how fast it sells out?

Of course it is. Was it ever actually alive there?

It's been comatose since, at the latest, August 2011 EDGE[2011-08-15] Xbox 360: dead in Japan:
The slump in sales has, we understand, caused many Japanese videogame retailers to contemplate dropping the Xbox 360 altogether. Geo, the nation's largest specialist retailer, is drastically scaling back its Xbox 360 business, and staff at electronics retailer Yamada Denki in Ikebukuro, Tokyo, confirmed that the company is removing hardware and software from the majority of its stores nationwide, and is selling off its remaining stock at a heavy discount. It will still sell the console and games, but only in selected stores where the system continues to be sufficiently popular.
And lets not forget the end for 7th generation life cycle support is scheduled globally for 2015 (PS3) and 2016 (Xbox 360).

I'd be surprised if it ended up going that way, personally; Microsoft dropped the original XBox almost immediately once the 360 came out, while Sony has let pretty much every system it's put out die slowly.

"Support" is a vague term. As far as they are concerned the classic Xbox was "supported" for more than 4 years past the Xbox 360 launch date (2005-11-22 NA Xbox 360 launch; 2010-04-15 Xbox Live for the classic Xbox goes dark). Classic Xbox Live probably stuck around longer because the Xbox 360 had partial backward compatibility - with the 8th generation there is no such "problem". It should be expected that as soon as the Xbox One supply stabilizes and the early adopters have been sufficiently milked that there will be a sales drive to push the Xbox 360 out of the mainstream - at which point they'll shutdown XBL 360 support as "the remaining demand cannot justify the operating cost".

The PS2 was not supported by an online service. The PS3 goes hand in hand with PSN. This time Sony has the incentive to eliminate the cost of supporting the PS3 on PSN. Therefore one should not expect the PS3 to "linger" in the same way the PS2 did.

It's not really vague or relative. In terms of software support, Xbox 1 was dead the day 360 launched. You can expect PS3 to be supported a while longer; it's only just been released in a couple of less developed countries.
There is still a steady stream of Japanese PS3 titles, and new releases continue to sell well. Some big titles like Persona 5 are still in the pipeline.
360 on the other hand has been dead in Japan for years (both hardware and software sales; I don't remember the last time a 360 game was in the charts; hardware sales are between 200 and 400 units a week).

So in Japan, best selling 360 games basically means best of next to nothing.

There's probably some truth to this, but at the same time one could also look to the PSP, which is also jacked into the PSN, and is still being supported (in Japan) despite having a successor on the market (though I'd guess that the latter's lack of comparable success probably has something to do with that). On the other hand...

The 360's face-plant in Japan is no secret, but we're not just talking about support in that region; elsewhere the system has much more of a foothold.

My gut still says that the PS3 will get more "twilight" support than the 360, but that guess is based largely on existing history, and it remains to be seen if the noted changes from the previous generation to the "current" one will have any effect on that. In any event, with the new systems on shelves and marketers falling all over themselves to keep them moving it probably won't take too terribly long to find out.

I'd be very, very surprised if the PS3 ceased to be supported before the X360. Microsoft was pretty quick to drop support for the original Xbox, and one could argue that they haven't been properly supporting the X360 for years now, while on the other hand Sony has been putting out a lot of critically acclaimed and commercially successful titles. The other day Gran Tourismo 6 was released, and today I read something about a new Tales game being scheduled for 2015.

Also, production of the PlayStation 2 ceased when? In 2013!
