Most of the other games have some slight callback to Ys I & II, though. Their stories are mostly independent, like you said, but if someone's decided to play the whole series and doesn't have a craving for any one in particular, things will be a little more coherent if they start with Ys I.

Side-on aside: I quite like the Genesis version of Wanderers from Ys.

This is a PSP question, so apologies...

Is there any way of playing downloaded games from a different region without having to sign in to that game's corresponding region account?

Great! Now I don't need to worry about changing regions. How the PSP faltered against the DS, I do not know...

Games.

It didn't really falter, that's a broad misconception. It was enormously successful and sold 80 million units.

It was just doubled in sales by the DS because touchscreen technology was innovative at the time, prior to the onset of Apple gaming.

You know Tom, alongside the Snes, the only other platform I have had this much love for is my PSP. Frigging love the machine. Such a beauty of a handheld.

It was on the basis of my adoration for the PSP that I actually bought a Vita.

I totally forgot that besides Super Stardust, there is also Flying Hamster HD, Velocity Ultra and Aqua Kitty (in the Playstation Mobile section of the store).

I need to check the Playstation Mobile section more often, it seems. There are two more free games right now, Fuel Tiacas and Super Crate Box. And Super Crate Box actually looks like a decent game (2D arcade). No idea if it's really the full game or just a demo; gonna give it a try.

Yeah, it has been interesting for me to listen to the banter between you two regarding psp/vita vs ds/3ds, and I realized the reason the ds was one of the best handhelds for me and the psp was ultimately forgettable was because of the type of games I like to play--old school rpgs and dungeon crawlers. These are genres that work great on the DS and basically wasn't showing up anywhere else.

So it is interesting how you guys (or at least replayme) are coming at the sony vs nintendo thing and not seeing why at least some gamers really adopted the ds. Dungeon crawlers, srpgs and even roguelikes are what the DS is all about. If you don't enjoy that stuff, the console might not make a lot of sense to you.

The PSP has enough of these to last you a lifetime.

Word. And I don't even want to open up that can of worms that is PS1 Classics via PSN.

If it's just SRPGs and dungeon crawlers, and we're focused on quality more than quantity (although both systems have plenty of SRPGs), then give me the PSP any day. Final Fantasy Tactics, Tactics Ogre, and Growlanser pretty much seal the deal on the SRPG front. And all the Elminage dungeon crawlers are on PSP.

I'm not at all into the cute chibi stuff so perhaps that's the difference. I'd say that the DS has a huge relative edge against the PSP in sidescrollers if we're looking for system genre advantages.

Here's a "best of" RPG list for the PSP. I assume quite a few of them are available on PSN as well for use on Vita:

On the subject of interesting PSP RPGs and reasons to get PSP-CFW for your Vita, the Valkyria Chronicles III translation project is aiming for a release date in two weeks.

Well I'm totally happy to be wrong. Is there a way to play all those psp rpgs on the vita? I'm looking on my ps3 psn right now, and many of the psp games are not available to be downloaded for vita.

All my digital PSP games work if you buy/download them on the PS3/PSP and copy the data to the Vita. I can't confirm whether that's universal though.

You can play most PSP games on a Vita, but there are a few restrictions.

There's some noticable UMD-exclusives that never got a digital release, there's the games that needs to be transferred from a PS3 and there's some games that just won't work. You can just forget about games from another region, fan translated or homebrew games.

If you have PSP-CFW for Vita you can play every PSP title... but you lose out on future Vita titles.

CFW doesn't allow me to use my UK games whilst using a US account. My PSP keeps cutting out and shutting down.

Also, how does one upload and use PS1 iso files?

Finally: Ys Celceta is due here in UK in February.

You need to decrypt them (and optionally, recompress them again). Installing CFW by itself won't remove region restrictions for PSN games or DLC, but it is possible (and easy) to have games from multiple regions on your memory stick.

I'm totally on board with the PSP love. *Completely* on board.

I can even be led to say that the sexiness of the Vita is enough to get one. It nearly is.

Honestly, though: there's an absolute dearth of games on it for me, though. There's no killer app that has me dying to own one, and I don't see anything coming up, either. I may still end up getting one, but more for the novelty of it.

Just been able to get PS1 Einhander eboot to work on my PSP. Pity the screen is slightly small, but still amazing none-the-less...

Biggest problem with the PSP is the interface. The analog nub and d-pad just aren't optimal for a game like Einhander, even in the hardware revisions.

At the peak of my Progear playing when I managed a few 1cc's, I could do well on PSP emulation, despite marginal choppiness, but the d-pad was a foil to really being able to attack it.

The Vita's d-pad is one of the best from anyone in many years, and the screen lends itself much better to Einhander and Progear etc (and Dariusburst!) than the PSP's, so I'd really do your best to get on that when the time is right. I have my fingers crossed for a heaven-sent hacked platform for classic gaming.

I find the lack of the two shoulder buttons to be the biggest hindrance. But even with these concessions, and considering that I have just opened myself up to the entire PS1 library - including its crazy RPG catalogue - the PSP is definitely my handheld of choice.

At this rate, I won't even need a 3DS or a Vita.

Alright, maybe not. But Nintendo really have missed a trick as far as Snes compatibility is concerned on the 3DS. If they got that sorted, I might actually prefer my 3DS over my Vita.

Y's Celceta has turned out to be great.
I was very surprised when my best bud gave me the anniversary edition as an early Christmas gift. It has been a decade since I've sunk myself into a game like this.

I bought my vita a month ago to be able to play Spelunky and Dragons Crown during my breaks at work. Really loving it so far.

Celceta is going to be bought in February. I know that the US version isn't that much more expensive, but I am in no rush right now. I just discovered the joys of PS1 games via CFW and PSP. Am also going to try a few PSP (ISO) games, for demo purposes, and then delete them so as to buy the UMDs later.

The PSP is definitely my most favourite "console" since the Snes.
