I have no doubt it's an incredible movie. avoiding it atm for the reason you mentioned.

regarding Cross of Iron: didn't get much attention here in the states (or not nearly enough). what a shame. awesome movie!

Samaria - Kim Ki Duk

Is this a back-to-back marathon?

Yeah, I was hoping to get through the movies in quick succession.

I was most having problem on what Kim Ki-duk film to pick. Originally it was supposed to be Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... and Spring. Now, maybe 3-Iron. I'd still have to look into Samaria.

The Thing (1982). Pure awesomeness of course.
I actually fell asleep towards the end but I've seen it many times. The BluRayz transfer is excellent.

SPOILER:
John Carpenter was such a visionary, breaking the mold of the time and that of the future by letting a black guy live to the end of the film.

I remember back in junior high, before I was really aware of the whole 'black guys die first in survivor/horror movies' thing, I watched that shark-survival movie where Ice Cube (I think) survives. I was vaguely but deeply unsettled.

It may be worth pointing out that Arnie only survived the Predator by donning black face.

Two black guys got jacked the fuck up though, so we can't really use that as a similar case.

EDIT: There are actually "real" movie critics that have recently given it bad reviews. WTF?

Actually I think it's an open question whether or not he lived, and I'd say the final scene is better if he didn't. Sharing a drink with Armageddon.

I think it's obvious no-one makes it out alive, that's what makes it such a great ending.

Good thing Carpenter didn't go with his alternative.

How did you guys feel about the The Thing prequel?
I've been holding off on watching it as I am a huge fan of the 1982 classic.

Thaaaaaat's Thing -1!

Did you know the thing prequel was 90% practical effects? I couldn't believe it either.

I could swear I'd posted this on this forum before, but according to the commentary for the original Thing, the cast and crew looking at the practical effects on set didn't think any of it would be convincing. Expert lighting and camerawork were just as important in selling the thing as the puppets themselves.

Like most unnecessary sequels, Thing -1 was dumped on an unknown director with the notion that if he blew it, at least the franchise name would get butts in the seats. I'm guessing he blew it. Considering that most of the puppets were set on fire at the end of their scenes, the studio probably decided CGI-ing over his mistakes would be cheaper than rebuilding everything and hiring someone more talented to re-film them.

Kung Fu Genius
What a somewhat loopy movie at times, and a teacher who just goes along with his only student's plan to start a school in a nearby town. The action is quite good and the final fight scene is pretty decent. Still some parts made me just giggle at how stupid they were. Action is great, rest is so-so.

DVD prints of his work are pretty hit or miss, but that's par for course. Thanks for checking!

I watched Metropolis last night. Wowzers, that was a marvelous film. It was the 2002 restored version, and it made me immediately order the complete 2010 complete version as soon as I could. It was a real feast for the eyes.

I rented Pabst's Pandora's Box along with it, so this weekend is totally my German Expressionism weekend.

Definitely open ended. I did a lot of reading about it too. Nauls made it to a suspiciously late point in the movie as well though, for good measure.

That video was awesome.

Had a movieful weekend:

Everybody Street. A fantastic documentary about street photography in New York. Even if you're not into photography at all, this is worth watching as it will help you look at fleeting moments differently. I found it quite inspiring.

Pulp Fiction: Bought the BluRayz for like $7 at Tar-jay when I was back in the US some time ago. Finally got around to watching it. Delightful.

Akira (Really Fucking Loud Edition): I've raved about this festival before, and I know I sound like a broken record. My words do it no justice. Most anime fans (especially those that read the manga first) diss the movie regularly for being too compressed. I feel this is unfair as such arguments overlook a lot of the cinematic feats of the movie... the most noticeable is the perfect infusion of the soundtrack. On par (and maybe even better) than Blade Runner in that respect. How can you not like mass destruction being played to such soothing music?

Anywho, with the foreknowledge of what the experience would be like, I hand-picked a mate for a man date. We were having some beers and dinner when I mentioned it didn't have subtitles and he kind of freaked. Thanks to the internet, we got a timed script. That worked out perfectly -- he was really moved by the whole experience. It kind of made me lament the old days of analogue subtitling. The early internet had tons and tons of timed (and untimed) scripts available for download (and had to be run on an amiga!), and were relatively easy to find. What the fuck happened? It took me 20 minutes of scouring (and being unable to download the SRT file which I think was ripped from the official disc) until I decided to seek help here. RIP that part of the intarwebs?

That's completely stupid. Akira isn't a neat adaptation of the manga, it's a re-imagining. I read the manga before I watched the film, and both are astounding on independent merit. I did the same with 2001, incidentally, and feel both novel and film, different as they are, should be held equally as high for different reasons.

Yeah, I agree. I enjoyed the manga (read it a few years ago) but let's face it, it suffers what a lot of serial publications suffer from: it's really fucking long. I might go back and maybe I'll connect w/ some of the lesser characters.

Oh Akira (manga) is a beauty. It's length never felt protracted to me, I love it panel for panel. It goes places!

Don Jon

A surprisingly successful combination of love story, satire and comedy. Jon the porn-addicted womanizer could be a tragic or sad figure, but it turns out to be only a realistic character who, more or less, finds love and becomes a slightly more mature person. His friends and family are more stereotypical (deliberately), but still sadly realistic; women, adopting Jon's point of view, are mysterious and difficult to manage.
I suppose some part of the audience is going to find many things not fun and/or to judge Jon negatively, leaving them with heavy-handed caricatures and a simple story about a shallow asshole, and another part of the audience is likely to enjoy a realistic, acute and funny portrait of one of them without realizing they are being criticized.

Well written, photographed and edited, with a coherent style based on repetitions of places and events which are at the same time representative of Jon's obsessive habits (making the few times he does something else stand out), symbolic or just plain important (e.g. Jon's stats-keeping confessions at the church), and often very funny (special mention: Jon's sister).

Warning: don't expect to see a lot of porn (although they really did their homework), nor memorable sex scenes. Careful editing limits the naughtiness of porn clips to some nipples, while the erotic intensity of most of Jon's sexual encounters is undermined by his dissatisfied voice-overs (porn is better...) or by grotesque situations and feelings.

Agreed. I think it's even better than BR in this aspect

I just watched Adjustment Bureau. It kind of sucked...

Also watched Kick-Ass 2 yesterday, as I expected not as good as the first but I just wanted to see Hit-Girl again
