For new Vita owners, I really recommend a US PS+ subscription, ATM it gets you:

Gravity Rush
Hotline Miami
Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath
Soul Sacrifice
Uncharted: Golden Abyss
Wipeout 2048
Zen Pinball 2: Star Wars Pinball
(+ Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed this month)

Every single game on that list is worth trying. Yeah, you lose the games if you stop subscribing, but for 40$ a year (it's 50$, but there's often discounts) it's well worth it, especially if you also have a PS3. In addition to the games you also get discounts, cloud saves and auto updates.

Also get:

Dragon's Crown
Persona 4 Golden
Super Stardust Delta
Ys: Memories of Celceta

Holy crap, the US subscription is way better than the EU, wtf are Sony playing at - why can't it just be universal? I was waiting for a special xmas package to enable my code...

Not sure why people would genuinely recommend Gravity Rush - it's like a really sweet tech demo that's let down by an incredibly boring game structure and terrible combat.

Very few of the RPG's interest me, I'm super suspicious of Killzone (as anyone would be!), and I'm not sure if Soul Sacrifice is my thing.

I'm really hoping the machine's library gets better next year, until then I think Super Stardust and DJ Max are the safest bet.

EU+ is actually generally thought of as better than US+. Maybe more because of PS3 games and that US+ used to only to get 1 Vita game a month (second US+ Vita game this month is Urban Trial Freestyle, if you're wondering).

Well, you won`t know until you`ve tried. Have you played any of the games from the now abounding hunting action genre(that`s what they call it in Japan)? They are usually quite exhilarating experiences, especially if you can find someone for co-op play.

It's not without issues for sure, but it's a pleasant experience still. I`d say it`s worth playing just for continuity's sake as there`s a second installment in the making and it`s very likely to be a major improvement over the first game(if Siren 2 is anything to go by).

I enjoyed Gravity Rush (yes, it's not without flaws) while Soul Sacrifice wasn't exactly my cup of tea (maybe I'll give it another chance later on). Both seem to have sold well enough, because sequels are forthcoming.

Soul Sacrifice Delta is not a sequel. It`s an expansion with new monsters, hunting arenas, types of magic and co-op modes. This sort of thing is traditional for hunting action games now: Monster Hunter G, God Eater Burst etc.

I don`t believe a trailer has been posted yet, so here it is:

Well the 3DS is 3D, for one.

It's a bit of a baseless comparison though, because yes, if the games were identical more people would go for the nice OLED and better control interface - but the Vita never will have Nintendo games and that's a huge reason for its sales struggle.

To say the 3DS is already past its half way point is a bit much though, I think it's still a long way off yet. Another round of Pokemon, Mario, Zelda and Monster Hunter and it might be getting there.
The 3D is nice. Shame it's on a crappy low res screen though.

Also, sales of the Wii U suggest that Nintendo games aren't the be all and end all.

Jonathan Ingram wrote:Dragon's Crown is a must buy. It successfully blends brawler and RPG elements and packs a ton of content and replay value. Lumines is worth it too, but only if you can find it for cheap.

Now for recommendations...

- Rayman Origins and Rayman Legends - two of the best platformers in recent years and looking really lush on Vita`s screen
- Metal Gear Solid HD Collection - four Metal Gear games(HD versions of MGS2-3 plus MG1-2 for MSX) for the price of one
- Persona 4: Golden - a remaster of the PS2 RPG by Atlus with updated visuals and new content
- Disgaea 3: Absence of Detention - Nippon Ichi`s grindy SRPG
- Soul Sacrifice - a hunting action game(think Monster Hunter) with grimdark aesthetics
- Ys: Memories of Celceta - the latest in Falcom`s action/RPG series
- Muramasa Rebirth - a port of Vanillaware`s Wii sidescroller with some new content(via DLC)
- Jet Set Radio(PSN only) - a Dreamcast classic in the palm of your hand with HD visuals and improved controls
- Killzone Mercenary - the only good first-person shooter on Vita
- Gravity Rush - a platformer/adventure by Keiichiro Toyama(Silent Hill, Siren) with gravity mechanics and a comic book style storytelling
- BlazBlue: Continuum Shift Extend and Dead or Alive 5 Plus - if you`d rather play fighting games on a handheld, both of these look, run and play very well

Oh, and welcome to the board.
6 titles that appeal to me.

This canes any 3DS list imho - regardless of Nintendo developing for it or not. The Vita just has more games that appeal to me.

I look at the region locking of the 3DS as being infinitely worse.

Regarding Gravity Rush: the irony is that if it was developed by Nintendo, many would probably hail it as being the second coming. But Nintendo would never allow themselves to develop such a unique IP as they're too risk averse now. Also, I wouldn't go so far as to dismiss it by calling it a tech demo. That's just disrespectful. It may not be perfect, but it's certainly not nearly as bad as you're making it out to be.

Gravity Rush is a must have title and deserves to be experienced by everyone. Cannot wait for the sequel.

God Eater 2 was shifting Vitas before my very eyes in Hong Kong. There's a ltd edition machine with the game that I saw people buying regularly. Must be pretty good if it's a console seller.

You must stop saying this. It's not that good a game, and no-one would hail it as Nintendo's 'second coming', they'd just say it's got a terrific gravity manipulation mechanic that's horribly wasted on a very simplistic side quest and repetitive mission structure. There's nothing about the actual game design that's groundbreaking or virtuoso, it just drops into an episodic routine of fetch quests, completely pointless gem collecting, and identikit mission scenarios with really poor combat. You're deluding yourself on this one: it should be much more, but as it stands, is not a reason to buy a Vita (proven by sales figures) and I certainly wouldn't recommend it to everyone. Nice way to kill a couple of hours, but just way too shallow in light of its single innovative element.
Also, I wouldn't go so far as to dismiss it by calling it a tech demo. That's just disrespectful.
Okay, outside of the Gravity mechanism, explain to me what it does that's interesting. Don't say graphics and music.

All you guys are throwing out suggested purchase lists, but I don't see the catalogue as particularly strong. It's the same when I walk into a store and browse the cabinets: I hope I'll find something worth taking home, but in the end nothing really feels worth the spend.

Rayman can suck my nuts, I'm never buying Legends. Thirty minutes with that was more than enough.
MGS... God spare me, not again!
Persona 4 - intriguing because of all the hype, but what about 1 - 3?
Disgaea, grindy srpg? Not an idea that particularly appeals. Just like the art really.
Soul Sacrifice: time to take a look. Demo coming down. But if it's a lesser MH why not just play MH?
Ys? Falcom? Action RPG?! I'd say sign me up, but I'm sure it doesn't have the inimitable SD styling I have in my head right now.
Muramasa: Sex, but rinsed it on the Wii.
Jet Set Radio... rinsed it on the Dreamcast.
Killzone - I'm wary of FPS's that come with such an average lineage.
Gravity Rush - five hours in and I honestly couldn't wholeheartedly recommend it. A shame.
BlazBlue - more BB?! Noooooooo, time to walk away. Was never as good as Guilty Gear anyway. I'd play it for... well for free.

So in that entire list there's nothing I'd walk out the door to buy today. Or tomorrow. Likewise I've had nothing to play on my 3DS since finishing the major releases, but would I take A Link Between Worlds over that entire Vita list up top? I think so.

Are all probably better than 4. What gets me are all the people excited about Golden when they've probably already beat 4 a dozen times. Actually, let's take it a step further, some of the people I know excited about Golden admit openly that 4 is a serious step down from 3 with unlikable characters and a scooby-doo plot. I'll admit there's a fair amount I like about 3 even if I haven't come to terms with the game as a whole (IE soundtrack is pretty awesome), but 4 misses by a pretty wide margin. Go play an earlier title, a true SMT game, or hell, mars matrix!

Nintenodo Land is a tech demo - and yet, that is still hailed as the Second Coming by some people when it comes to being mentioned in Wii U circles.

No 3D Zelda game (since OoT) has been "groundbreaking". The titles have just regurgitated the same tired mechanics with "simplistic side quest and repetitive mission structure". Zelda also has really poor combat.

Pokemon is a system seller, but I refuse (on principle) to play that game. Cannot get away from that title fast enough.

Sales of Mario 3D World suggests its not a good game. Also, I'd rather take a Rayman game over a 2D Mario title anyday.

I don't. But I'm still suffering from "Post-purchase rationalization" when it comes to my 3DS though. I think the 3DS support and extensive library, together with the Vita hardware, would be a match made in heavan.

Too bad Nintendo rejected Sony at the alter...

Edit: Mario Kart really is amazing, and truly does look remarkable in 3D. Alas, the screen is ultra low res. Can only imagine what it would have looked like on the Vita...

What about them? If you're worried about having to play the earlier games because of story continuity then there's none. That said they're all playable on Vita:

Persona 1: not particularly well thought of, and neither is the PSP port which is the one playable on the Vita.

Persona 2: split up in two parts, one that has the enhanced PSP port localized (and that one people do like) and one that has the PSX port localized and available on PSN. They're pretty well regarded jRPGs.

Persona 3: Has the PSP port available for Vita, it's a pretty controversial port with many saying it's better than the PS2 port and many saying it's worse. (important: if you plan on playing this, do not play the PS2 version on a PS3 unless you like randomly corrupting saves). About as well liked as Persona 4.

If you want to know why the series is so popular today, I would really start with playing Persona 4. Persona 1/2 are really very different. Persona 3 is what introduced the changes that made Persona really popular. but it never significantly changes up the dungeon graphics and music (where you'll be spending most of your time) and in the case of the PS2 version: doesn't have quick travel or control of anyone but the main character in combat. It's a bit more tedious to play than Persona 4.

Can we keep the Nintendo talk out of the Vita thread maybe?

Thanks, that was pretty useful, although yourself and cmoon have quite different opinions regarding the quality of the fourth.

But, Persona is just a regular JRPG? No bells and whistles? I know the SMT armageddon backstories are really cool, but I though they had some distinguishing features (don't they blend in dungeon crawling or something?)

I haven't played the earlier games. Planning to get around to playing both parts of 2 and entirely skipping 1..

However, I think there's some Pokemon element in all of them (collecting all Personas), the two first games were known for allowing you to talk to enemies (convincing them to join you, scaring them away, etc). The third and fourth game dropped that and introduced light VN/dating sim elements.

They all have light dungeon crawler elements, as mentioned above I can only comment on Persona 3/4 really. There's dungeons but they really only consist of walking around, getting into random encounters and finding items. Nothing more exciting than that.

To be fair, I haven't played 1 or 2 either but have watched videos. It was almost enough to push me into buying a vita/psp and I'll probably consider it if more titles show up on the system I want to play (especially non-dance games from Atlus *cough*)

There is a lot of room for difference in opinion--P4 fixed some of the game play problems but IMO had worse music, characters, story and I thought was far less subtle in a lot of ways that still make P3 a nice game.

Is DoDonPachi a lesser Gradius?
I played some Monster Hunter back in the PSP days, and I quite enjoyed it, but I'm always wary of anything that's an enormous timesink as I always have lists of stuff to get through. The 3DS one seemed nice too, but I was put off after you and dcharlie said it felt a bit rehashy. 25 hours on Dragon's Crown is about my limit, although the two new dragons must die! (So I expect to put in at least another ten hours with that.)
Dcharlie and me were weary of Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate(called Monster Hunter 3G in Japan) because it`s based on Monster Hunter Tri(Wii) and Monster Hunter Portable 3rd/HD(PSP, PS3) which we had played to death. MH3U offers very little meaningful new content over the previous versions(some would say the addition of G-class monsters is meaningful, but what it really amounts to is the same monsters that you`ve already fought a thousand times except with boosted stats - a hurdle that`s negated by the introduction of G-class weapons and armor), but it`s the final and most complete iteration of the third generation of Monster Hunter games and one you should definitely go for if you want to start somewhere(Monster Hunter Freedom Unite is another good option now that you have a Vita; it`s the most iconic MH, but it`s also pretty damn brutal and has some truly awful hit boxes).

Monster Hunter is an enormous time sink, yes, and requires a long-term commitment(20 hours in a Monster Hunter game is just scratching the surface, really), but the core gameplay mechanics are so addicting that once you`ve got a hang of them, you won`t be able to put it down until you feel you`ve accomplished everything there is to accomplish.

Unlike another major time sink, role-playing games, where success is mostly determined by stats and equipment rather than strategy, skill and forward thinking, Monster Hunter is highly skill-based and has a steep learning curve. There`s no instant gratification here like in Diablo or some other mindless clickfests - you have to slowly work towards your goals by learning the monster`s attack patterns, your weapon`s moveset, invincibility frames and cancelable animations. As a result, the feeling of satisfaction when you finally fell a monster that`s been giving you hell for half an hour is that much greater.
God Eater 2 was shifting Vitas before my very eyes in Hong Kong. There's a ltd edition machine with the game that I saw people buying regularly. Must be pretty good if it's a console seller.
God Eater is a pretty cool series(also very different from Monster Hunter), but that`s not the main reason it`s selling well. 'Hunting action' has replaced JRPGs as the most popular genre in Japan. As long as a game from this genre is good and there`s a decent marketing push behind it, it`s going to sell and even drive hardware adoption. Vita in particular is practically infested with this kind of games(surprisingly, the 3DS doesn`t really have much outside of Monster Hunter).

Here`s a comprehensive list of hunting action games presently available on the Vita:

Toukiden(Koei Tecmo)
God Eater 2(Bandai Namco)
Lord of Apocalypse(Access Games/Square Enix)
Ragnarok Odyssey(Game Arts/GungHo)
Ragnarok Odyssey Ace
Soul Sacrifice(Comcept/SCEJ)
Phantasy Star Online 2(Sega)

Coming in the future:

Soul Sacrifice Delta
Phantasy Star Nova(Tri-Ace/Sega)
Monster Hunter Frontier G(Capcom)
Freedom Wars(a SCEJ produced game formerly known as Panopticon; co-developed by Shift(the team behind God Eater) and Dimps).

Gravity Rush - five hours in and I honestly couldn't wholeheartedly recommend it. A shame.
Regarding Soul Sacrifice, I find it superior to MH in two major ways: SS drastically cuts down on all of the wandering/tracking that's found in MH, meaning that it doesn't waste your time and instead throws you into one large arena where the boss is waiting for you. Besides that, it provides a well-told and captivating story that motivates you to continue playing, so that you never really feel like you're merely just grinding away for better items (main reason I stopped playing MH). There are also many minor-yet-welcome differences, such as allies you can take into battle with you when you can't find real players to co-op with, all of whom "level up" the more you use them. I also like that the rewards obtained for completing missions are determined by skill rather than just random drops. Plus, I find the art direction and setting much more interesting than those of MH.

As for Gravity Rush: the combat system is different from most action games, yet it does offer the option to play it in a more traditional way (the "wrong" way). The combat's main focus is mostly reliant on aiming divekicks while hovering in mid-air, and then using an appropriate special attack for the situation, and going back to mid-air divekicks while the special attack recharges. Going for gold medals during the combat challenges pretty much requires one to learn how the combat system is supposed to work. The other major draw of the game is the setting, the characters, and the story, all of which I found interesting.

Laborious, inaccurate and tedious is what it is. I basically just try my luck with divekicks while the super recharges, and then just sit back while it knocks half the boss's lifebar off.

Short story, it's not a good combat system.

Yes, it has a nice aesthetic, influenced by French animation with a similarly toned soundtrack - but the story really isn't interesting, especially the parts where Kat spends half her musings about boys she likes and unreciprocated adolescent crushes. Fuck all that.

ICO: girl, castle, GTFO. All I need.

It's definitely not for everyone, but I wouldn't call it inaccurate, at least not in most cases. I found the targeting reticule's auto-aim generous enough. The only thing that really takes practice is getting the reticule close to an enemy and then getting used to using the gyroscope to fine-tune the aiming. Well, that and using the touch-screen to dodge in mid-air, that's actually the hardest part for me as far as combat goes.

I dunno. I think the point of those scenes was to humanize her character. I got the impression that it's supposed to serve as a contrast to who/what she really is, though I do wish the game went into her past a bit more than it did. I guess they wanted to save something for the sequel or whatever.

Well it's an extremely generic and lazy way of doing it. If I want teen angst I'll tune in to every other JRPG, anime and manga made in the last decade.

It's an aesthetic with an opportunity for poetry, Panzer Dragoon style, but they blew it. The entire invading Nevi thing feels tacked on, too.

What would you recommend? I'm thinking about buying "Lumines - Electronic Symphony" and another game. Any Shmups on the Vita? Or should I go with Dragons Crown? I like every genre so no way to sort out.

There's Sine Mora to check out on the Vita (aside from the Xbox 360 version).

The Vita port of Ridge Racer uses microtransactions to buy extra cars, classic RR tracks from past RR games and BGM add-ons (the PSP version of RR was better in terms of overall tracks given to race on). No slick opening intro RR FMV movie with the Vita port of RR this time around though.

Wipeout 2048 has the cool Wipeout HD and HD Fury upgrades to d/l as well.

Asphalt Injection has a super sliky-smooth 60fps framerate despite it's arcadey-racing vibe going on...it's a fun racing title for a quick spin/romp.

Trying out the digital download of PSP Gran Tursimo port on the Vita is a must-have...looks awesome on the 5" OLED screen!

Unfortunate as it is, I don`t think an average consumer gives a hoot about OLED. Vita`s sales in Japan have actually gone up since the introduction of the LCD version. Damn philistines!
Wait...so the Vitas that are out now don't have the OLED screen? They *downgraded* the thing? When did this happen? How'd I miss this? US systems too, correct?
