There was some famous shooting game that came out for the PlayStation 1 that had essentially a whole Japanamation movie intertwined into it and the game was pretty interesting to boot but I've forgotten the name. I therefore vote for it anonymously.

I believe you're thinking of Geppy-X (the only shmup, as far as I know, to come on four discs)

Beer just leads to a quick death in shmups. Progear + mushrooms is better. Time seems to slow down, concentration is heightened, and every pattern is detectable / manageable.

You know, that's actually a pretty good choice. In some ways the stages' slow-moving oppressive feeling can become almost relaxing, and you've got a built-in sip window during the stage select.
