Best beer drinking shmup

Most of my arcade shooters require intense alertness and allow no breaks for sipping a brewsky. I have found the cps2 19xx to be a beer friendly game. This shmup doesn't crank up the difficulty until the 3rd stage and gives you time between stages to let you take a swig and reflect on your score. Any other party friendly vertical shooters out there?

Mushihimesama Futari. You get an insanely long time in-between stages if you manage to collect a ton of amber without dying as it tallies it all up. Can easily be a couple minutes long.

More seriously the game also stops between stages, requiring you to manually choose "GO ON" to go to the next stage.

that said, the best options are always those where there are plenty of power-ups and items for people to fight for

suggestions:
- any of the newer Cave games in Novice mode
- R-Type XBLA in Infinity mode
- Heavy Weapon (PSN / XBLA / PS2 / PC) - try this, it's really awesome despite the childish looks

There was some famous shooting game that came out for the PlayStation 1 that had essentially a whole Japanamation movie intertwined into it and the game was pretty interesting to boot but I've forgotten the name. I therefore vote for it anonymously.

Are you kidding me? I can't play videogames even with one beer in me. No, nothing to do with being too drunk, just a massive drop in interest when it comes to playing videogames, is what. So no can't help you, outside of the known easy and/or simple shmups. ... Wait, maybe a methodical shmup like R-Type might be fine? You know, where it's basically one simple challenge at a time. aka, checkpoint by checkpoint (and you can swap gamepads back and forth with a druken partner as friendly competition).... from what I've played of part one in Dimensions, this is very poossible at least up until the second last level where I hit a checkpoint (like the second one, where these enemies keep coming one after another non-stop until like 2 screens over) where I spent like over an hour of dieing and restarting over and over and over and over (at first this would happen almost instantly, lol). And for some reason I refused to take the easy way out by the restart level option so that I'd be more powered up (which would of helped a ton). I just really wanted to see if I could pull it off? (It was an interesting challenge & I was in the that mood)... Though I came close a few times, but man, if that was the boss checkpoint, and the boss is hard, then I'd probably give up for sure. Hate boss restarts being too far away. And R-type kinda does this (and heck no to Super R-Type ).

I agree when I'm drunk I'm less interested in playing video games but for what it's worth, some people are better at shooting games after having ~1 drink. I think there is a sweet spot where it can calm the nerves while not slowing you down enough to add to your getting hit by bullets ratio. I've tried it myself and on multiple occasions while going for my first 1CC on a game I've had my best game thus far after 1 drink. The problem is sustaining that level.

Yup, that's how I work, although I don't partake too often anymore. With 1 beer my senses are finely honed and I play much better. More concentration and less anxiety. Anything after that, though, and I'm even more worthless than usual.

That is hilarious! In all seriousness though Rez is a good answer to the OP question. I usually get in the mood to fire up some fighting games after a beer or two with friends, but I can also go for some Blazing Star. It does get harder towards the end of the game, though...

Rez only gets better the drunker you get...hell, you wont need to be that drunk to appreciate it. And its a pleasure sense for the crowd as well with the bass and lightshow that follows.
