Devil Crush for MD vs PCE
Hi guys,
I am planning to buy Devil Crush for MD or PCE
Been checking on the internet but I can't reach a conclusion.
Which version would you reccommend me?
Thanks!
PS.- Also between Shadow of the Beast? MD or PCE?

Re: Devil Crush for MD vs PCE
I like the MD one's extra graphics and its richer sounds as well as its vertical presentation, but it has a game-killing bug (for me at least): When the drain is latched and your ball hits it, half the time instead of bouncing off it gets flung down the hatch at full speed. I'd go for the PCE one. The PCE one also has nicer colors IMO.
Shadow of the Beast? I dunno, time hasn't been kind to that one: The game is pretty much all graphics-- like a lot of the earlier Psygnosis efforts, gameplay takes a backseat to art design in that game. I've mostly just played the Amiga original, which looked amazing for the time.

I thought that was only in the US/EU Dragon's Fury version. I tried the JP one via emulator and didn't get the same bug. Might just be a case of it not happening all the time, but I definitely noticed it when trying out the US/EU version. The US/EU Dragon's Fury also changed some of the graphics for the worse. Not just the censorship, but they even changed the main background. I have played the TG-16 one more and definitely recommend it. Not sure if it's better than the MD version, but it's different enough to be worth playing on its own.louisg wrote:I like the MD one's extra graphics and its richer sounds as well as its vertical presentation, but it has a game-killing bug (for me at least): When the drain is latched and your ball hits it, half the time instead of bouncing off it gets flung down the hatch at full speed. So, would you reccommend the MD JP version or de PCE JP version?
Price are more or less the shame I reckon

Aha! I kinda suspected that but wasn't sure. That's great to know.BrianC wrote:I thought that was only in the US/EU Dragon's Fury version. Both versions share most of the graphic assets. Due the lower horizontal resolution on the PCE it's fullscreen here, while you you get the "square" playfield on the MD version. Colors are better on the PCE version and the music is slighty different as well. I certainly prefer the PCE version for all the reasons combined.
The biggest difference in gameplay though is that the MD version can be finished rather quick (just play through all the bonus levels), while the PCE version runs until you max out the score (which can take A LONG TIME). The PCE version provides a password system to split the task up over multiple gameplay sessions.
Shadows of the Beast is a catastrophe on the PCE

Some of the bonus rounds on the MD have been altered and look better than their PCE counterparts.

I like the music on the MD more than on the PCE for Devil Crush, and I think the Genesis palette makes the game seem more metal and badass.
Come check out my website, I guess. Random stuff I've worked on over the last two decades.
Re: Devil Crush for MD vs PCE
The jp version of Shadow of the Beast MD has been slightly edited (music, sprites, colors).

If you end up getting tired of it, drop me a line. Devil Crash is a game I been meaning to add to my library for some time.
They don't make games with gothic/horror themes that are just straight up awesome anymore (except maybe Devil May Cry OH WAIT Capcom ruined that one). Now they're all too obsessed with trying to horrify players in ways that make their protagonists look like whiny idiots. Bah. Give me a pinball and a paddle to steer it by and I'll show you how to clean up Silent Hill.

PCE for the win. I really don't like Technosoft's changes for the MD version. Especially the music and the fact that it stops when you lose a ball, so stupid.
As for Shadow of the Beast, PCE Beast has the best gameplay, smoothest controls of all versions, and the amazing music. If you want graphics FM Towns version for the win. No matter what version you play it's a shit game though, so I choose Towns for graphics and music.

Re: Devil Crush for MD vs PCE
I've had the pleasure of trying out the TurboGrafx-16 version of Devil's Crush on a prototype Turbo Express back in October of 1990 when NEC was hosting a Halloween event at a Good Guys store. I was blown away by how crystal clear & razor sharp the TE's active-matrix LCD screen setup was (compared to the original Atari Lynx & original GB handhelds). Keep in mind that the TE wouldn't be officially sold in the USA until January of 1991 with a whopping MSRP of $299.99 USD instead of the original suggested retail price of $249.99 USD -- I asked the NEC rep how much it was going to sell for & when it'd be available to purchase (it was slated for a December 1990 release but that wasn't the case with the TE in retrospect).
It's possible to generate a custom password for use with Devil's Crush as mentioned in a certain issue of Video Games & Computer Entertainment (as the developer devised an easy way to do so). The VG&CE Easter Egg article with creating your own PCE/TG-16 DC password went into greater detail as to how to generate such a code & to test it out to see if it'd actually work or not. Through trial & error, it was fun to see if a sample password could be entered & implemented to change the dynamics of the game/gameplay/score/how many extra balls in reserve/etc. Fascinating stuff indeed.

Today I talked to like a 60 year old woman at work about Devil Crush and Alien Crush. It was amazing. She actually brought it up.

I played the hell out of Devil's Crush on the Turbo 16 back in the early 90s. Still to this day, my favorite pinball game for consoles.

I also have both. Totally worth it as well. I consider the MD version more a "black label" than the same game really.
