Fudoh's ode to old display technology
Re: Fudoh's ode to old display technology
I think I'll go with SAL for the X68000 monitor as well. As said I've had big CRT screens shipped to me from other countries on many occasions. So far it has been smooth sailings, but you never know. It all comes down to how the shipper does the packaging.
I recently moved from the Canada to Europe and had to ship all my hardware including a 52" LCD and two 14" PVMs via boat cross continent. Everything went well because I packed carefully.
Unfortunately I have no control over the packing process in this instance, but SMJ, my proxy of choice, usually packs my shipments well, so we'll see.
I was holding out for a monitor with the original box for extra secure shipping but I got tired of waiting.

Having some ghosting issues with my BVM connected via RGB and Component. No ghosting when using Dreamcast (15khz signal), but significant ghosting with Saturn RGB and PS2 480p.
Anyone had this issue before? How was it resolved?
I studied transmission line theory many years ago but I'm a bit foggy, any help would be very much appreciated.

are your loop outputs properly terminated with 75 ohm termination plugs ?

Re: Fudoh's ode to old display technology
Hi, just bought a PVM-14L4 for running a whole heap of old consoles (SMS, MD, SNES, Saturn, PSX, PCE) and computers (MSX, Amiga, Speccy, Beeb etc), which I previously had connected to my old old Commodore 1084S - which just died
I've downloaded the users manual direct from Sony for free, but does anyone have a PDF of the service manual available?

Yes, although they were the cheapest ones I could find on ebay.

Fudoh saif it doesnt matter, Fudoh said it is just a BNC plug with a resistor.BubbaMc wrote:Yes, although they were the cheapest ones I could find on ebay.

Hi everybody,
Just needed some help with a pvm 2950qm.
I got it this week end and tried to get my japanese consoles in rgb.
All the consoles NTSC J got a vertical rolling pictures on the PVM.
I am using the proper japanese rgb 21 to bnc with sync cleaner from retrogamingcables .
The funny things also is i got a famicom titler which output via s video and same vertical rolling screen.
I got a ps2 pal which display nice picture both in component and rgb.
I have ordered a sync strike from germany but i feel strange that the pal doesn't create problem but the ntsc does.
Any recommendations?

Only just saw your post. You're absolutely right!Lawfer wrote:What TV did you get from Germany? Based on your forum post about 240p and "strong scanlines" it seems like you wanted to pick what SCART Hunter considers to be one of the best if not the best crt TV.andykara2003 wrote:Will do. Thanks for your suggestions
I shipped an E3000 chassis Loewe, one of the best consumer CRT's according to Scarthunter - and less strongly scanlined than the Sonys apparently.
I got the great advice from you and Fudoh only after I had had it shipped via DHL. I wish I had thought to ask you guys before I went ahead.
I seriously learned my lesson on shipping CRT's today when it turned up in pieces.
Completely gutted. The TV looked like new and had had relatively little use. It had actually been packed pretty well with lots of styrofoam, bubble wrap etc..... But it must have been dropped from a height. Of course packing it onto a palette would have prevented this.
I will definitely go with the palette option using iloxx next time

Hello to all!
I am a newbe about home arcade and i have some ask for you.
I bought a Sony D24 BMV to Monstermug to be used as a final home entertainment device arcade.
I intend to connect several sources to play that i already possess:
1.-PC:
i7 with GTX590. Classic games for Mame Hyperspin
2.-Console:
An Xbox 360 (Jtag)
PS2 pal (little use and for classic arcades only)
Dreamcast (litle use)
3.-Arcade:
A Sega Naomi and Lindbergh (CF + Gun options from an Confidential Mission)
I would want to ask what you think that would be the best way to connect everything to see it in the best way possible.
I wish PC games MAME could play without lag and with the best image for 240p content source (MVS, CPS, Classics, PS1, ...)
Same for playing the shumps of cave that I have in the X360.
I have also questions about how best to connect the Naomi.
Think I do not have any Cable and would like a full solution
I need to Downscale PC? what kind of cable should I buy?
Thanks in advance

Re: Fudoh's ode to old display technology
no, but you have to use a broadcast standard resolution, in other words: 720p60. The BVMs are no real multi-sync monitors. They only work with a limited number of resolutions.I need to Downscale PC?
You need an Extron RGB 203xi with three VGA inputs and one BNC output. To the inputs you connect your PC, your Dreamcast and your Naomi. The Extron will convert the signals from 31khz RGBHV to 31khz RGBs or RGsB and this you connect to the BVM using three BNC/BNC cables.
The PS2 you can connect through component with Cinch/BNC adapters. This will support 240/288p, 480/576i and 480p. Same goes for the 360.
Lindbergh: don't know about that. The BVM doesn't support VESA PC resolutions like 1280x768....

In 720p60 will be the best form to see the 240p material from the PC? i have read all your blogs about down and up and i´d like to see the neogeo and capcom classic collection really fine on the BvmFudoh wrote:no, but you have to use a broadcast standard resolution, in other words: 720p60. Re: Fudoh's ode to old display technology
with the right software settings, you shouldn't see a difference between 240p, 480p and 720p, while 720p gives you the best compatibility to use the PC for all kinds of stuff like programs and games. In 720p60 will be the best form to see the 240p material from the PC? i have read all your blogs about down and up and i´d like to see the neogeo and capcom classic collection really fine on the Bvm
component for both your ps2 and your 360. 360E models (that's the latest ones) won't work on the BVM.I have the ps2 by scart and the xbox360 by hdmi. What cables must i find?

Re: Fudoh's ode to old display technology
I taked
with that setup. And after a lot of think about how to make a little corner game in my home (the living room its no posible--> Family rules)...that is the solution i want.
The pioneer V402 seen in this forum its also very tempting for tate setup. But i think its really very dificult find one. It is?
Its there some simliar for tate setup?
I want to have 2 displays:
one Yoko 16:9 --> BVM D24 for clasic consoles and PC mame horizontal games, Xbox360 and sega Naomi/Lindbergh with guns
one Tate 4:3-->(for now i will take the naomi cabinet monitor and will do an wood case for it) for the tate shumps and classics like my beloved psychic 5 (my prefer ever game)
Am i crazy?
May be a little...

yes, that's fine.
Re: Fudoh's ode to old display technology
I'm happy to report that a couple of new cables solved the problem. For the PS2 I'm using a Monster PS3 component cable, and the image pretty much perfect. For the Saturn a different scart cable did the trick.Fudoh wrote:are your loop outputs properly terminated with 75 ohm termination plugs ?

Hello, a bit confused by that... I understood from your excellent site that the chain should be:
PC VGA -> Extron VSC or similar (480i) -> Extron RGB interface (dip switch, 240p) -> monitor
Also, what about the PVMs in this regard?
Re: Fudoh's ode to old display technology
I love this thread...
Now I want a better and bigger TV than my 29" Sony Trinitron ( KV-29FX11B ), and eyeing those 40" Plasmas.
Say, what are good prices for those (Mailand Europe)?

Re: Fudoh's ode to old display technology
no, that wasn't what we were talking about. My above recommendation for a 230rxi was just to get a VGA switch along with a sync conversion box to get 480p and 720p RGBs for the D-series BVMs.Hello, a bit confused by that... I understood from your excellent site that the chain should be:

80-130 EUR for units with pick up only. Up to 200 EUR for units available for shipping.Say, what are good prices for those (Mailand Europe)?

Now i am looking for the cables to connect all.
To connect the same sources (Xbox360, Ps2, MamePC, Sega Naomi) to play in tate mode (shumps and classics) to an 31Kz naomi monitor? To play retrogames in horizonal i am going to use the Bvm. For Tate (while donnt find a better option) i will use a chip naomi monitor i own. Only to play classics vertical games and shumps. It has vga input (the monitor) and the normal sould be connect all in vga mode from Xbox360 (i must buy a vga cable->Naomi monitor and a components cable ->bvm??? its this rigth?
connect the sega Naomi to the monitor its normal in vga and the dreamcast the same (were designed for that resolution).
But for the Ps2 I dont know. How can i do it?
. And my last ask after read the fudoh´s Blog... Its recomendable use an emotia or similar to download the PC-Ps2-Xbox 360 to play shumps and classsics games (that were designed in 240p) in a 31kz monitor?
Thx and best regards

By the by Fudoh, since you seems to have a magical ability to attract hard to find hardware be sure to let me know if you ever sniff out a ~20" BVM with not too many hours on it in mainland Europe with a shipping option.
I've been considering importing one from across the atlantic but that will likely cost me close to a thousand euros.

Re: Fudoh's ode to old display technology
I only just saw your post - it's great to hear that someone's having consistent success shipping CRTs internationally. So SMJ (I think I found the company) did the packaging for you? Did you have to give precise instructions to them on how to do this, or are they specialists who know how to handle this sort of thing? Also how did they pack it? Was it just in a cardboard box with lots of padding around it or on a pallet for example?kamiboy wrote:I think I'll go with SAL for the X68000 monitor as well. Re: Fudoh's ode to old display technology
The SMJ venture has not yet started. The monitor I bought is still with them and once shipped it will take weeks, if not months, before it arrives.
I will not be giving them any instructions, that is not really how they operate. You just make a shipping request telling them which shipping option to use, SAL in my case, and they do the rest.
To be honest I have a feeling this one will not survive the trip, but beggars cannot be choosers. It is all up to lady luck.

Re: Fudoh's ode to old display technology
Best of luck - I really hope it arrives intact. I think my tactic is going to be to pay the shipper say 30 euros on top of the TV price to do an over the top packaging procedure. I'll give detailed instructions with diagrams & send them all the packaging materials. Sounds like a hassle & a lot of money but the extra cash should encourage them to take it seriously - & it's worth the money not to be driving the TV to the dump as soon as it turns up (like last time)kamiboy wrote:The SMJ venture has not yet started.
