Re: Shmup Ticker: What are you playing RIGHT NOW?
I'm going to do it in normal play first for the overflow, then I might try playing score attack. I just wish Cave would've made separate leaderboards instead of forcing people to play offline, but at least they didn't remove it completely...

I am playing Armed Seven right now.
I am supposed to have some breaking "news" about it in my inbox that I can't read at work, so hopefully I can share that with you guys.
But yeah, Armed Seven is pretty fun.

Have been playing SDOJ Arcade a lot lately, and have been making some good progress. I felt like I needed a change of pace though, so I've also started playing Under Defeat again. Forgot how fun it is, and how tough it can be at first. A really nice change of pace from the Cave style.

Re: Shmup Ticker: What are you playing RIGHT NOW?
I've been trying a bunch of games recently and nothing had really been clicking with me. Gave R-Type II a couple of hours tonight and that was pretty good. Might end up trying for the clear, we'll see....
Re: Shmup Ticker: What are you playing RIGHT NOW?
Saidaioujou. Fuck.
Normally, the pattern with Cave games is to hit the third stage within an hour or two then the struggle starts. The only exception is Galuda II, but even there, although I suck at it, I still get it, it's just balls hard.
This? I can't get a grip of, at all. It's a combination of things I think, the graphics are odd, the bullets seem to come from fucking everywhere rather than just the top half of the screen - it feels like playing Flying Shark, with Cave bullet density sometimes; the bosses seem to take up acres of space and feel really claustrophobic... I dunno, it just feels all wrong and I can't for the life of me find any sort of rhythm. First shooter I've ever played where I feel like any sort of progress whatsoever is way beyond my limited skills. Yet, I still won't play Novice.

Radirgy Noah on Makaron.
I'm gonna be objective as fuck: The mechanics are diarrhea, the bosses are shit and the last boss it's stupidly hard for no good reason. The game has a couple of good ideas, but they are ruined by the mechanics. I hate this game. I just want to 1CC it and never touch it again.

Re: Shmup Ticker: What are you playing RIGHT NOW?
All the recent Ikaruga talk made me go back to the game for a couple credits. Decided to try Easy mode, since I'm so used to playing Normal and wanted to see what difference it would make.
I made it to Stone-Like's second last pattern before getting a game over, and broke 14 million for the first time ever.
Then I went and tried again, thinking I had the clear in the bag, and did horribly.
Died to the randomest things, it was awful. BUT I WILL TRY AGAIN. I've been chasing an Ikaruga clear for literally years now, it feels so exhilarating to actually be within sight of one after all this time. I may not be scoring terribly well, but that can come later-- or never, even.

Vulcan-17

Spread-11
Sword- no clue
Max Stock- x06( a toal of 7 Silverguns)
Still stuck in Stage 3, keep screwing up on Gallop, leaving me with little to no lives for 3E.

Ether Vapor Remaster [PC].
It was $2 on Steam, so I bought it.
and it was a good purchase, the game is damn cool.
The only real niggling issue I've been had is that your invulnerability period feels off -- I'll get hit, become invulnerable for a handful of moments, then get hit right back again ASAP. Otherwise, it's really cool. Very dynamic feeling.

Come check out my website, I guess. Random stuff I've worked on over the last two decades.
Re: Shmup Ticker: What are you playing RIGHT NOW?
Playing the Trigon I recently picked up. Enjoying it a lot so far (I like checkpoint shmups), and its another time I'm thankful I bought the reco autofire pcb.
Getting to stage 4/5 on first few credits, seems like it will be a tough clear though. I'm also trying to clear Gunbird 1, which really shouldn't be this difficult, haha.

My favorite MVS side scrolling shmup. Were you playing an original cart or on a multi-cart? I only have the multi-cart version (real deal costs some $$) and I'm curious how it plays compares.Neorebel wrote:I played a lot of Blazing Star on my MVS cab today...

RFJ is a great game. I never could get into the regular Raiden Games, but RFJ is fantastic.alpachinko wrote:A little Raiden Fighters Jet this morning and a whole load of Ketsui later. Getting so much better at RFJ now. Ace game
Re: Shmup Ticker: What are you playing RIGHT NOW?
Playing shmups on the neo geo including Last Resort, Pulstar and Blazing Star a couple of years back when I got my first cab is what reintroduced me to this genre. Having said this, nowadays I much prefer playing verticle shmups.Crafty+Mech wrote:My favorite MVS side scrolling shmup. Were you playing an original cart or on a multi-cart? Out if curiosity how much does a mvs copy of Blazing Star go for these days. I know the Aes version is obscene but didn't realize that the mvs version was also expensive.

$75 - $100 for a nice cart on eBay US. Not super expensive, but to rich for my blood where MVS is concerned. The priciest original cart I've bought was a $65 Magician Lord w/ Shockbox.Neo Bliss wrote:Playing shmups on the neo geo including Last Resort, Pulstar and Blazing Star a couple of years back when I got my first cab is what reintroduced me to this genre. I agree, RFJ is most excellent indeed. Playing as part of Raiden Fighter Aces on the xbox. Need to get stuck in with it as at the moment it's punishing me.To Far Away Times wrote:RFJ is a great game. I'm playing G-Stream G2020. It's an awesome game with an awesome soundtrack, though it's a real shame it was produced on poor sound hardware. I love the weapon system, it allows you to experiment with different combinations/power levels. The whole game feels like it could be a sequel to the Raiden Fighters series, apart from the fact that there is only one playable fighter.

I love the scoring system in RFJ, complex but not so much that you won't see rapid improvement in score from watching a few replays, alpachinko wrote:I agree, RFJ is most excellent indeed. Raiden Fighters Aces is a great disc, and the Xbox live replays for the RFJ leader boards are a gold mine.

Just did this with B-L in training mode... isn't that a higher score than the WR?

Interested in putting a score like that on the leaderboard?

Re: Shmup Ticker: What are you playing RIGHT NOW?
Yeah, that motivated me to stick with the game for a while longer. Stage 5 is a little harder with Type B imo, but I think she's the best character for scoring during the overflow because of her speed and shot style. B-S should be even better.

I'm trying to decide what to play next:
Hyper Duel
Thunderforce AC
Eliminate Down
19XX
Area 88

Is that more than one full overflow hyper? Or is it all just killing more tanks in the speed part?
E: Okay, I guess it has to be only the end hyper still. I really don't see how anything else is possible without EX unless there are some very significant route changes somewhere.
Re: Shmup Ticker: What are you playing RIGHT NOW?
Looped Gunbird, onto Strikers 1945 ii. This is really fun, though I sense the Saturn slowdown is making certain parts much easier (but by no means less fun). Having now played Dragon Blaze, Gunbird I&II, and Strikers 1945 I&II, I definitely feel like Psikyo's verts each have their own individual personality. After this I'm going to try Turbo Force and Sonic Wings to see what proto-Psikyo is like.
