While I'd really like to bash the X360 (for whole other reasons). I reall think it's very premature to say "the" X360 has problems based on 1 person's account and some rumoring.
There's always a number of failing machines on a production of hundreds of thousands or even millions.
And even if there was a more than "normal" number of failing machines:
Every major console launch of the last few years had at least some problems (be it with wrongly pressed discs, flying discs and more), which can just be considered as start-up hick ups.
Let's wait for a few more weeks and see if this really is a problem and on what scale.
Never thought to be defending Microsoft! Ever!

Wow now you can say that Microsoft really is copying Sony!
Anyway this seems to be becoming pretty normal as far as console launches go. It's too bad Nintendo seems to be the only console maker who cares about hardware quality anymore. I'm not even a Nintendo fanboy either....

The 360 does have a problem with overheating (we have three at work and the get hot as hell), but only in extreme cases should it cause problems like the ones mentioned here.
Just make sure it is well ventilated and not kept on carpet.

Wow!! Check out the ridiculous price these things are going on for!
eBay link!
Eighteen launch titles, with about four or five of them being actual "NEW" titles (Ridge Racer 6, Perfect Dark Zero, Condemned, Project Gotham Racing 3), the rest just being ports of already existing multi-platform games.
Ridiculous amount of defective hardware.
Easily the worst launch ever.
Does anybody remember the Dreamcast launch by the way? What games were available for it?
Some consider it as the best console launch ever, but was it so?

Soul Calibur, Power Stone, Virtua Fighter 3, nlf2k, house of the dead II and Sonic Adventure were all launch titles. I bought the dc for soul calibur.Does anybody remember the Dreamcast launch by the way? What games were available for it?

1. Are all of those not just "Buy It Now" idiots? I didn't feel like further investigating.ST Dragon wrote:Wow!! Check out the ridiculous price these things are going on for!

2. Ridiculous amounts of fucked up hardware? So far this is the first I've heard of that problem, and its probably kids putting the system in poorly ventilated areas.
3. 18 launch titles is bad? While I may only be interested in... 4 or 5 of these games, thats 3 times as many games launching as usual. Also, Dreamcast and 16-bit consoles aside, I would say that title wise the 360 has had the most solid launch period...
And factor in the fact that Bill Gates gave everyone who waited up to buy an Xbox 360 a present (took off $50 on the purchase... everywhere, Wal-Mart, Best Buy, etc.), I would say MS did a damn good job with the 360.
And whenever I get around to getting one (why get one now when the DS is the real show stopper of the holiday season?) I will definitely enjoy the fuck outta some Senko no Ronde, Oblivion, Gears of War, etc. etc.
RABBLE RABBLE RABBLE!!!!!!
I think only the SNES had as good of a launch as the DC did. Most titles were solid.
About the Xbox 360, I had read in my local paper that one of the test units crashed and froze. So it's more widespread than it seems.
Wonder why Nintendo offers 1 year warranty while others offer only 90 days.

Don't hold grudges. GET EVEN.
Ah my top launches would be DC and original xbox. Of course having a bad launch doesn't seem to hurt too many consoles. I'll just mention looking at recent history because I don't want to come off as a Sony, 360, or Nintendo basher.Specineff wrote:I think only the SNES had as good of a launch as the DC did. The 360 has a good range of launch games, but none are classics. It may have the bigger launch, but the Xbox's launch was better, thanks to just one game.
No Halo at launch? Microsoft, you have messed up.

At least 1 good thing in Dutch consumer rights is that no matter what the company grants you for a warrenty period, there's an "certain expected lifetime without product disfunction" warranty. It's not writtten in stone but if you for instance buy a washing machine with 12 months warrenty, and it break after 15 months you can be sure as hell to get a costless repair or replacement since one "might reasonably expect" the machine to last longer before showing certain faults/malfunctions! If it's not the retailer, than it's the producer of the goods but you'll get back a working machine back without having to fork out yourself!Specineff wrote:Wonder why Nintendo offers 1 year warranty while others offer only 90 days.

They plan on releasing Halo 3 the day the PS3 comes out. Some big egos they have at Microsoft.judesalmon wrote:No Halo at launch? Microsoft, you have messed up.

As for the hardware failures; despite being a patrotic American, I believe all things made American are built to fall apart, so the manufacturers can make more money replacing the cheap shitty parts at wallet-raping prices. That's captialism for ya.

I'm going to wait on the 360. It does look very impressive in terms of graphics, but graphics means nothing if there's no gameplay to back them up.
Hell, I'm going to buy the first Xbox! That should be a clue to ya all that I'm always a generation behind.
Shmups: It's all about blowing stuff up!
I've played all my older consoles continually, for an extended period of time in a poorly ventilated room, where the heat can reach 40 degrees Celsius during summer time, but I've never had any of them freeze on me.jp wrote:2. So, bad ventilation should not be a factor in this case.
Poor excuse from MS imo.

No, you are wrong about this. The production lines of all the consoles, 360, X-Box, PS2, GameCube, GBA, PSP, DS ... are in fact in China. So thus the PC you are using to access this forum.FatCobra wrote:As for the hardware failures; despite being a patrotic American, I believe all things made American are built to fall apart, so the manufacturers can make more money replacing the cheap shitty parts at wallet-raping prices. No wonder everything are built to about the same quality, because all of them are Made in China.

*Meow* I am as serious as a cat could possible be. *Meow*
I'm waiting for news of an X360 exploding, taking out a small neighbourhood. Hardware failures are one of the reasons why I never buy a console at launch, and instead would prefer to buy the console when it's been through a few revisions and had problems ironed out.
That and the launch games usually suck. (I wait until there's at least 5 good games worth buying. If not, the console doesn't make it to my collection.)

It would be interesting to know what percentage of machines have failed, out of the million or so they have shifted in this first allocation.
Yes that's right - a million. Makes those 20 dead ones sound fairly insignificant. As always, you only ever hear about the ones that broke - it'll be much longer before anyone can say just how widespread any problems are. Most likely explanation I've seen so far is there's apparently more than one type of power supply, and one crashing machine magically worked fine when hooked up to the other type.

Think? No I'm down to HOPING Sony will fare better. Of course judging by the PS2 launch, I will most likely be disappointed.Specineff wrote:Some people have narrowed it down to the PSU. But I wouldn't be surprised if it was otherwise.
You guys think Sony will fare better? Hah. I bet my entire game collection that there will be reports of blind PS3s all over the world.
