In my experience TN displays are pretty much unusable in vertical orientation. I have an HP 2408w monitor which has a rotatable stand, but it's a TN so the image quality in vertical is so messed up (right half of the screen has washed out colors) that it completely defeats the point.

Twisted nematic IIRC. There are various types of LCD panel such as IPS, TN, IGZO and VA plus other variants. They have different performance characteristics with regards to things like viewing angle, colour reproduction and refresh rates etc. TN is probably the cheapest of the lot.

if you move your head to the left or right and colors and contrast ratio changes immediately on your display, then it's a TN. IPS panels have much better viewing angles.

I used to have the HP w2207h, similar panel to your 2408w. That was especially bad even compared to my 204B.

My U2410 looks great rotated.

my CRT dreams are dead. it's just too hard and a hassle to acquire, repair and maintain PVM's and other high-end types, at least where I reside... I cave'd and just went with a decent IPS LED monitor.

i dont care anymore, i'll SLG and upscaler shit if it really bothers me.

RoninBuddha, your setup looks great. I have never owned a flatscreen plasma/lcd/led, but I can certainly agree that CRTs become a nuisance (especially if you start hoarding them). I like that you put a 1L6B on that hss-0130, but I wonder about the shelving it is placed on. Don't you need space to put your leg sunder the stick?

Monstermug, killing it as usual. That is one hell of a setup right there.

main reason i used wire shelving is because it allowed me for proper (well, close enough) candy cab-like height for the stick. there is room for my legs, more like my knees, as i spaced out the bottom tiers way lower. the rods are sticking out due to the altered height, i will cut those down once i get the proper tool.

i was inspired by this girl's setup to use wire shelving, although mine was not as extensive.

Nice setup. How is gaming on a IPS monitor? from my experience with IPS monitors, they are very slow.

Also is that arcade stick custom made?

Not necessarily, they've always been just behind TN in terms of reactivity.
There are plenty of IPS models with good RTC/overdrive today, just as fast as many TNs.

Good god, where did you get all of those? Definitely envious!

And yeah, hoarding CRTs is a bitch. I think I've got 8 in my house/garage/car right now. I have no idea what I am doing.

This was my pre-cab spree setup:

Used a pair of these 20" sanyo's for a while, these were pretty good for s-vid:

Post cab gets and now most are in the hall :( Hard to part with them for no good reason:

this is something i researched quite a bit on, and from what i tested and played on, the one i got was pretty decent and highly recommended for fighting games. I can't tell the difference in response time compared to TN's, and it plays well enough imo. The main reason i opted for an IPS panel, is because of tate reasons, naturally. TN's look a bit off and has bad angle view when tate'd.

as for the stick... its a sega saturn Virtua Stick Pro (HSS-0130), originally. modded it extensively. now it's multi console (PS360+ pcb) replaced with a seimitsu 1L6B 1player panel.

Dude, that Sanyo seems a perfect candidate for rotation. How's the viewing angle? Looks almost SPOT ON to me...

Good to see other's hoarding 4:3 monitors :)

Got SDOJ for xmas from the wife, inspired me to get my shit together, so...

here's my temporary setup until I replace my *broken* Picturetel 36" RGB \ VGA CRT :(

The natural shape and angle of that sanyo tated is so perfect!

The 6-bit IPS displays seem pretty speedy.

I know my U2410 certainly wouldn't be suitable for shmups, kinda.

Certainly a question of getting the right IPS monitor :) The input lag on an Fs2333, for instance, is 2-3ms, so they can be very fast.

Using a Dell 32 inch television Tated. Also utilizing a modified x-arcade dual stick. great for playing shmups with friends. This is now a permanent fixture on my desk.

I was prior playing shmups on a cinema setup with a HD projector but find the smaller screen more appealing with arcade close proportions.
