Mobile Shmups With Good Controls

So actually... I kinda like mobile shmups. Like... a lot. I feel like Mushihimesama is perfect with touch controls. Sure stuff like Espgaluda is maybe a bit too complex for the platform, but I feel like if a respected company would make a shmup specifically designed around the advantages and limitations of a touch based platform it could be godly.

I'm interested in getting more iOS shmups that use a similar control setup to Caves stuff. I don't want any of that virtual d-pad bullshit. Any recommendations? How are Darius, R-Type, and Raiden on iOS?

Also feel free to troll/hate on mobile games here if you want to because internet. But keep in mind, while nobody wants the genre to become nothing but mobile that doesn't mean potential spectacular mobile experiences should be rallied against.

Touchpads are cheaper to produce than decent buttons, d-pads and arcade sticks, therefore touchpads are The Future™ and one of these days a REALLY successful 2D shooting game using it should appear.

Came here to say this. Also, Ikaruga on Android plays awesome too.

There are none. Any company who ports serious games to phone platforms instead of real consoles or handhelds is an enemy of the genre.
Of course, that's just an opinion.

I don't really agree, but I see where you are coming from.

BUT what if we change "port serious games" to "develop serious games"? That what I really want to see.

Been a while since I played a good shmup on my phone, but the Cave ports all run relatively well with touchscreen controls. rRootage is pretty boss too, well worth checking that out. I found a lot of games on the iPhone especially broke the flow with just having one stage then backing you out into the menu after beating the boss.
