The Self-Introduction Thread
Re: The Self-Introduction Thread
Hi this is sarethums. Im from Glasgow uk. Ive been interested in shmups forever and got pretty good a geometry wars but as of the last few months I've been getting really into cave hell shooters for the 360 and I have a proud collection of ps2 shmups that I play on my 60gb ps3. I work in retail selling video games to the masses and my main subject in life is bodybuilding and studying nutrition.
My plunge into darkness, so Granturismo 6 is just around the corner (even though i don't play it anymore GT is my most played game EVER and still a big part of my life) and i wanted to buy a G27/G25 wheel for it but decided not to, I saved myself £300+. Then I thought I'll buy a wii u with the money that I have just saved but then I though I'll just end up spending too much money on games etc, thus I saved money again by not getting the wii u. So this brings us up to 2 weeks ago when i was trolling ebay and amazon for a shooter (mushihimesama futari ver 1.5). Then I thought f*ck it, and bought: 2 fight sticks, 3 region free cave 360 games, 6 rare ass ps2 shmups and a sealed copy of xevious 3D spending all that I had previously saved. This is when I realised that I may be a bit of a shmup fan.

Slippery slope mate! You'll be buying empty Cave kit cardboard boxes and Taito ashtrays like the rest of us in no time!

Re: The Self-Introduction Thread
So, for the past year or so, I've been a shmup fan, and I've actually been lurking here without an account for nearly as long. Why did I only just get an account if I've been a fan of the genre for the past year, you may ask? Honestly, I dunno.
When it comes to shmups, I don't bother with PCBs or anything, partly because I'm afraid of the price, partly because my mom would kill me for wanting an arcade cabinet in the house, even though it recently turned out that she has spent around $20,000 on purses.
Now, aside from shmups, I generally play JRPGs, platformers, and indie games which aren't pretentious as all get out.

Hello
Hi,
I'm new in this forum and I reached you from Spain looking for some arcade pcb for playing at home.
I'm very interested in any platform game, and specially in Taito games (BB, Rainbow Islands ...). The arcade world is new for me because I have been always working with C64 and Amiga.
Saludos!

Hey Folks, WhiskeyDanger here, been a fan of shmups for decades in the arcades (1942, Raiden, R-Type). I currently live in the SF Bay in Northern California. Back in 2001 I bought a Macross Plus PCB, but it languished in storage until this year. I finally acquired a few arcade cabinets, a Dynamo HS1 that is being restored, and a Capcom Impress Candy Cab; my intention is to put Macross in the Dynamo. I've seen this forum on an off on my searches, folks seem positive and helpful, hope I can contribute. Thanks!

Re: The Self-Introduction Thread
Hi everyone, long time lurker here,
I grew up playing shmups like Salamander, Zanac, and Thunderforce IV.
Nowadays, I occasionally try to clear Raiden Fighters 2 (Freakin Sand Lobster is a wall), and play some Cave STGs.
Don't really know how I got into the genre, but I guess I just like airplanes and mechanical stuff blowing up.

My word! I'm sure you deserve one little cab in respect of such wanton expenditures!
I'm sure you could get a nice Jaleco Pony/Mini Cute/Aero Table if you floated just one of those useless clutches on eBay. Good luck!

That said Skykid, you always look great when you rock up with a sequinned clutch bag, and you inevitably look hideous slumped at an arcade cab.

Hey guys.
Decided I'd sign up as this looks like a great community, although I currently suck at shmups. I'm a 21 year old programmer from Scotland. Currently playing DoDonPachi and shouting at the screen. Not played any modern shmups besides from... Touhou. Looking to find out about a load of good games here.
I'm really interested in building my own MAME cabinet, which may or may not happen after the new year, so I'll definitely share that here if I end up doing so.

Hi everyone,
Wish I had found this website sooner
Im Robin, former staff writer on Zzap! 64 magazine and keen fan of shmups.
Favourite commodore 64 game is a shooter, the classic Armalyte.
Favourite in arcade is Salamander, an oldie but fond memories of it
Favourite on console? That would be Gradius V at the moment.
Excited to see that I dont know half of the top 25 shmups, so its going to be fun finding them and playing them on MAME.
Im planning to build a arcade cabinet running MAME too. Wish me luck!

Hello all, my names Al
Ive been playing STG's most of my life but am just getting deeper into them over the last few years. (And with help of lurking on this forum
). I'm from Manchester in the UK where the arcade scene seems to have died up a long time ago.
I am big into playing shmups on the following systems - Xbox 360, Saturn and Amiga (not so many goodies here tho, just nostalgia) and also occasionally run MAME on the PC as load times on the Saturn ports of DonPachi etc does my head in from time to time.
My current favourite STG has to be DDPDOJ, though I am pretty appalling at that game to be honest, closely followed by Mushihimisama. I do have a penchant for Cave games, but also really enjoy the works of Psiyko and Toaplan.

I've ... been here for nearly two years now ... but ... but I've never introduced myself, I don't think.
I'm sorry, I've been to self-absorbed in pushing my shmup series in the development board. Don't hate me :<
My name is Taizen Chisou. I'm a programmer, primarily, although at times I will make the average-est music ever and comics and junk (expand the hidden tabs)
I don't have any arcade games on hand, at the moment, so I'm having to resort to Touhous and those Cagar labels, like Trig Wars 3. I'm pretty okay at these shmup things-
TH06: Hard clear + Extra / TH07: Lunatic clear + Extra + Phantasm / TH08: Hard clear A, B + Extra
TH10: Lunatic clear + Extra / TH11: Hard clear + Extra / TH12: Normal clear + Extra
TH13: Hard clear + Extra / TH14: Hard clear + Extra
DonPachi: 3CC / DoDonPachi: 4CC
Trigonometry Wars 3 Cagar Label: Stage 4 / One-Two Cagar Label: Stage 3
-so I'd like to think that I'm not too out-of-place here.

Hello, registered and lurking for some time but now driven to be more active. Enjoy shmups, presently playing Mushihime-sama Futari 1.5 and Dodonpachi Resurrection for Xbox 360. Definitely a fan of the cave shooters with Espgaluda 2 arriving next week to further my playing choices.
Definitely Futari 1.5, just received it on Friday and I've already sunk 15+ hours into it. Very addictive gameplay with stunning soundtrack.
Started playing shmups on Mame and other emulators but find myself presently seeking out all shmups for xbox 360.
I also collect fighting games for the 360 so in total, specifically focusing on arcade based titles.
Anyhow, enjoy immensely the content of this forum site.
If anyone in Central Ohio wants to get together for shmup meet ups or hanging out, send a PM.

Re: The Self-Introduction Thread
Greetings all - this is my second appearance on the forums, the first being an alarmingly recent-feeling 7 years ago. I was only a 30-40 poster back then, but the site was a fantastic resource and it's great to see plenty of familiar names here from 2006. Massive respect to everyone for keeping the scene alive!
A mildly fun fact is that around 2007 I adopted my old forum name as my DJing handle, and for the past 5-6 years have been playing events in Japan and Europe under an incongruous shmup-inspired moniker
Apart from the occasional arcade credit I've been away from games for a few years now, but recently I decided to get back into things - once again I've been blown away by the knowledgeable folk here and have learned plenty from my pre-posting lurk. Right now I'm slowly improving my runs on Guwange, while having the goodness gracious kicked out of me by Recca.

Re: The Self-Introduction Thread
Hello from France!
My name is Julien (JUL for the arcade initials) and I have been lurking this place for quite a while, but I finally decided to create an account.
So, uh, yeah, where to start? I am in my early twenties (21 as of now) and discovered shmups a few years ago. Before, I was mostly playing Pokémon or Mario games ('grew up with Nintendo consoles) but I started trying to discover new games. That is how I came across Sin and Punishment in 2009 (it was referenced in Smash Bros Brawl) and learned about Treasure. S&P is an excellent game and became a gateway for niche gaming for me (as well as condemning all the other games in its sub-genre to be unfavorably compared to it
). Its sequel also pushed me towards buying a Wii.
It was also at that time that I noticed Touhou Project as well as the famous "Hardest video game boss" video. Both stimulated my curiosity about this genre I knew so little about before, so I tried EoSD (Touhou 6) and enjoyed it.
As Ikaruga and Touhou are definitely not the only shmups out there (as good as they are), I kept trying to learn more about shmups and the variety this genre provides (CAVE, Raizing, Milestone, Taito, etc.).
Shmups became my favorite video game genre.
Here is a list of the shmups I play more or less regularly as of now :
-Milestone shmups : Very fun and hectic! I love khdn soundtracks by the way.
-Shikigami no Shiro series : I 1CC'ed all of them but mostly with "easy" characters (Kuga, Reika). However, I am rather close to 1CCing Shiki'3 with Batu-2, but I am not dedicated enough.
-Ketsui DL (and Ketsui) : I mostly play the Doom and Extra modes on the DS version. As Rob/xoxak said on his video, it would have been great to have a dedicated mode for each boss as the Doom Mode concept is interesting.
-Dangun Feveron : The music and the game's relentless pace are captivating. I reached Stage 5 once, but can't do it again yet.
-Recca (on the 3DS)
-Thunder Dragon 2 : a good "middle ground" between old-school and bullet hell, I like that. I also play Rapid Hero sometimes.
There are also plenty of other shmups I enjoyed but am too lazy to play often such as Gradius Rebirth, Bangai-O Spirits, DoDonPachi, Metal Black, Darius Gaiden, Batrider, etc. I don't have a 360 and don't plan to buy one for the moment, but I woud have liked to try Qute and Triangle Service games. (Fujino's story is especially interesting) I only have Nintendo consoles so no XIIStag nor Trizeal either, even though I tried XII Stag Limited which is a cool demo.
Aside from shmups, I play some Umihara Kawase, SMT, and a few other niche games, but not as much as shmups.
I also like drawing and maybe, one of these days, I am going to stop postponing my project of developing shmups for fun and get started.
Hum...I think that's all for my introduction. I may have forgotten something but I would only remember that after I click the Submit button anyway and that is already a quite long introduction (and quite chaotic with all those parentheses! Why the hell do I always put tons of 'em?
Plus, I may have made some spelling/grammar/etc. mistakes). Thanks for having read all that!

Hi,
I'm new around here but I've been playing arcade games since early 80's (and now with our blessed emulators)
I have found this forum while searching for a very specific shmup called "Saint Dragon". This one is by far my favorite shmup of all time (Tokio comes close in 2nd place). And I'm trying to buy or have scanned material of this game for years without any luck. And fortunately I've found this site while searching for this game (it seems that someone here actually has this one - lucky bastard).
That's it

Welcome rcoltrane. I see you also registered on KLOV looking for Saint Dragon, which does come up from time to time. If you are really despirate to find the board, you could email sophia corp to source one for you from Japan.
