Word on Genesis shmups
I would like to have your guys point of view of these Genesis (MegaDrive) shmups:
Hellfire (I'm thinking about buying this game because to me, the game rocks!)
Viewpoint (Do you agree that this game sucks?)
Twin Cobra (Way too hard)
Raiden Trad (Alright port of Raiden)
Bio-Hazard Battle (WTF is that?) (The game is soo WTF, I'M BUYING IT!)
Gaiares (Very good but way too hard, because of the checkpoint system)
Steel Empire (meh)
Fire Shark (I herd the PCB version of this game was very hard, but I 1CC the Genesis version before, and I like it)
Whip Rush 2222 (I found the game to be enjoyable)
Truxton (It's alright)
Task Force Harrier EX (Levels and music are very meh)
Grind Stormer (MEH)
Wings of Wor/Gynoug (the game doesn't appeal to me at all, the cover art at least) (I may get this game soon, maybe one day)
Phelios (the game is good, I'm buying it)
Air Buster (Aero Blaster) I herd there's a US realese of this game. I didn't like the Genesis version that much, but I gave it another shot and I like it more now, but it's rare (e-bay didn't have not either one auction of Air Buster, only the PCB version).
Vapor Trail: The game is good, but I need more input from people.
Do you agree with what I'm saying?
You can add other Genesis shmup to the list (not MUSHA, Lightening Force (TF IV), or Thunder Force III because we all know about them already).

I disagree regarding Gaiares. It's an excellent game that's of a decent challenging difficulty. I think you just need to practice the game some more.Fighter17 wrote: Gaiares (Very good but way too hard, because of the checkpoint system)
EDIT: Fixed the quotes.

I sort of agree with you on Gaiares. I like it alot myself, I just don't put enough time in it to get good.
I, however, couldn't disagree more with your Steel Empire and Bio-Hazard Battle impinions. I found Bio-Hazard Battle to be lots of fun and the sci-fi theme & music totally rocks.
Steel Empire is pretty good, although it's rather easy due to the life bar. Again, the theme of the game really sets the mood. My favorite steam punk style I've seen in a shmup. Plenty of mini-boss fights to be found.

Re: Word on Genesis shmups
Hellfire
I like it, but not playing enough to give any comment.
Viewpoint
People said it is stuck. I haven't try it myself.
Twin Cobra
It should be unfaired. Actually the blue weapon (n ways) got a wider fire arc then in the acrade version and enemy bullet is slower plus got a lower fire rate. All these cann't compomize the change in screen dismension (from 3:4 to 4:3) which seems to break the game IMO.
Raiden Trad
People said that it is a okay Raiden port. But I haven't tried it.
Gaiares
Feel okay, haven't played it much to give any comment.
Steel Empire
I still think the GBA version is better. I can't quite get into playing it anyway,
Fire Shark
Best vertical shmups of MegaDrive IMO. Still cann't 1CC it (Reaching stage 10 on occation.). When compare to the PCB version, your plane basic weapon (Lime) got a higher rate of fire and destructive power. The game also give less speed up items than the PCB version.
The PCB version is just a little bit harder, it is still fairly easy. As I have heard people loops forever on this game. I myself can reach as far as Stage 8 with playing the game for just about a week.
Truxton
Really hard game. The MD version is quite close to the PCB version in gameplay. The game put you fighting close quater with enemy through out the game, you would have to know the bullet pattern before the enemy even fire it in order to aviode the bullets.
Bio-Hazard Battle
Whip Rush 2222
Haven't tried these two.

Hellfire
It's excellent.
Viewpoint
Actually, the port, although it's slowdown-ridden, is not bad at all. Sadly they totally messed up the controls which makes the game near unplayable.
Gaiares
It's way overrated, I think. But quite cool nonetheless.
Steel Empire
The design is cooler than the game itself. Still a nice addition to any Mega Drive collection.

I just try out the game and I didn't like it at all. The levels are very meh, and same with the music.egret wrote:I think Task Force Harrier EX is one of Genesis finest. And I have tried them all.
Edit: Gave Bio-Hazard Battle an other run. I'll still say that the whole game is WTF, but I think I'm going to purchase it.
Also gave Steel Empire an other run, still hate it.
About Gaiares, I need to play the game more to have fun with it. Then again, I'm buying this game anyway.

Truxton: I play the game again, and it's still alright. I might purchase this game one day.
I almost forgot about this game: Grind Stormer, very meh!
Edit 2: Wings of Wor/Gynoug (the game doesn't appeal to me at all)
What didn't you like about Gynoug/Wings of Wor?
I absolutly love it. I found the levels a bit too long, and the game moves a bit slow. But loads of action and some neat bullet/enemy patterns.
The setting and some of the boss designs are among my favourites, as far as MD Shmups are concerned. (That boss with it's heart outside his body is yet to be beaten).
I still can't beat the last level though, very harsh. Shame as it's my favourite stage.

Ok. I like the MD but the machine isn't the worlds hottest for shooters to begin with.Fighter17 wrote:I just try out the game and I didn't like it at all. The levels are very meh, and same with the music.egret wrote:I think Task Force Harrier EX is one of Genesis finest. And I have tried them all.

To some extent, yes. At least on the MD we have the Thunder Force games, MUSHA and other good shooters at least.egret wrote:Ok. Yes but Musha is just looong and repetitive. I think Alfa System got alot of inspiration from the Musha games btw. Task Force Harrier EX have some cool Garegga like veaponary and good gameplay beacuse of the right (sprite) size and space to the ingame elements.Fighter17 wrote:To some extent, yes. Come on the Genesis is home to the Thunderforce series, MUSHA, Gaires, Gleylancer, and fireshark. Those were some of the top shooters of their era. Sure the console might not hold up to the ps2's or DC's library of shooters but at the time it was the best machine for shmups.egret wrote:Ok. Re: Word on Genesis shmups
Bio-Hazard Battle's actually a pretty good game once you get into it. Gameplay's decent, and it has some unique graphical effects. Steel Empire's good, but I'd say it's somewhat over rated. Grind Stormer's a fun game assuming you find a cartridge that actually works. So many defective cartridges out there due to faulty Tengen PCBs (the actual ROM inside the cart's made from plastic as well). Wings of Wor's fun, but has a crappy cover.Fighter17 wrote: Bio-Hazard Battle (WTF is that?)

I really can't agree with that. Even newer consoles which feature more sophisticated 32 bit and above shmups, have as many AWESOME titles as the MD. Of course, it depends on your taste in shmups, but if you are a fan of early 90 shmups and earlier, that MD is an amazing machine with dirt cheap games. As mentioned before, the Thunderforce titles, Fireshark (and other Toaplan goodness), Musha, etc., etc.egret wrote: Ok. I'd actually stack the MD's selection up against any console, and unless you simply don't like oldschool games, it is really hard to dodge the wealth of quality shmups (most of which can be had for dirt cheap).
In fact, I'd recommend the MD to any shmup fan as a good starting console, based on both of these qualities. Unless they are afraid of old games, it is really hard to go wrong.

Re: Word on Genesis shmups
Thank god that at least the Robo Aleste CD works! I saw the Wings of Wor cover art, it sucks. I'm going to buy Bio-Hazard Battle soon just because it's a weird shooter to play. I never herd of the Grind Stomer probelm, but the game sucks anyway. I didn't even know that Air Buster (Aero Blaster) had a US realese until now (I wasn't a huge fan of the Genesis version, but I gave it another shot and like it). The only problem with Air Buster is that it's RARE!!! Who want to sell me their copy?superhitachi4 wrote:Bio-Hazard Battle's actually a pretty good game once you get into it. I update Gynoug, I will get it one day, but it's not in my "I WANT THAT GAME NOW!" list. Truxton is also the same deal with Gynoug, I will get it one day.Icecap Veiwin wrote:This is just me, but I'd reconsider about Gynoug...it's very fun (at least I think so).
Also, get Truxton. Seriously. You won't be sorry.
Edit: If you want to sell me some Genesis shmups, go to the trading station and check out my wanted list.

Edit 2: Vapor Trail: The Genesis version cut some things off which weren't needed (like cut scenes, etc.). I still found the game to be good, but I would like to have your feedback about this game.
No Mention of Trouble Shooter/Battlemania? That is one slick shump with Section Z style two way shooting, controlling two characters at once, and some quirky cute 'em up like aspects. The sequel (which I only tried a bit of) seems to be even better with the option for three different shooting styles (8 way, 1 way, and two way) and more intense action.
Burning Force also deserves honorable mention. It's not a true shmup, but it is very shmup like and very fun. Forgotten Worlds is a decent port, IMO, but I have reservations on recommending it since the Capcom Classics Collection version is superior.

Raiden Trad is somewhat dissapointing, as the overall port quality itself is kinda blah. The timing of enemies is WAY off.
Viewpoint is a valiant effort. A lot of the enemies kept a surprising amount of animation intact, the models all look good for the hardware, and the music tries to sound as close to the MVS version as possible (they kept the James Brown samples). The game itself however is SO easy because of slowdown issues and the fact that there are tons of missing enemies!
