Possible additions to your Top 25

Post by MadSteelDarkness »

The topic says it all. Which games have you played since voting for the last "Top 25 shmups of all time" that may end up on your list next time?

Definite:

Zanac Neo - Yeah, I know it's easy. Hell, *I* 1cc'd it  . It's still great.
Dragon Blaze - Completely the opposite. I'm crap at this game. Still love it tho'.
Strikers 1945 - This one finally clicked with me in a big way.
Twin Cobra - see above.

Not quite, but close:

Mushihime sama - I know it's not Cave's best, but I keep coming back to Maniac mode. Too much fun.
Game Tengoku - A lot of people bag on this game, but I think it's a great time. Not quite an all-time great though.

So, how 'bout ya'll?

Great topic and great additions! Just wanted to say that before I give the question more thought. We seem to have the same tastes, and perhaps the same skills.

Hmmm...a few possible additions...

Shikigami no Shiro II: Only played the demo before last year's vote, but since then I've bought it, and while it's got some frustrating points, the overall concept is great, and all the trimmings are there. If Shiki III is as much of an improvement as Shiki II was, it's definitely a future contender...

Bike Banditz: Bought it not too long after the vote...really excellent doujin shmup, beats out a large percentage of the "professional" stuff. Only thing that might hold it back is its rather short length.

Gradius V: Another one I got ahold of a little too late for last year...addresses a lot of the perennial problems with the Gradius series (in my view) and adds the ol' Treasure sense of "they want me to do WHAT?" Still doesn't fix all the weak spots though.

Mushihime-sama: I'm another one who doesn't group this one among Cave's best, but the absolutely wonderful aesthetic designs and 3 different modes make it tough to resist...

Battle Garegga: After all the hoo-hah from my early days here, I still have my issues with it, but the thing just has too many good points to ignore...it might just sneak in near the bottom.

I'm half-tempted to "clone" this topic with a "Which games from last year might NOT make it this year?" topic of my own, just for the heck of it, but that one might get ugly, heh heh.

Heh heh, go ahead and do the honors if you like, prof. :) Just beware before you do, people tend to react slightly less amiably when games (possibly their favorites) are criticized, even lightly, by others...

Espgaluda will be added to mine for sure. I have played that game almost every day for a year now.

Yes, ESPGaluda has definitely found its way onto my next list.
There might end up being places for Raiden III and Trizeal as well... we'll see how I'm feeling when poll season comes 'round again :D

I've gotten more into Harmful Park after owning the game. Batrider, while not new, is also becoming my fave Raizing shooter.

Yes, I too can't stay away from Batrider. Damn game has so many possibilities and variations that it seems endless. My favorite Raizing game for sure. :)

Shikigami no Shiro II: Nice concept, done very well.

Gradius Gaiden: Best Gradius ever.

Trizeal: This will rank very high in my next top 25. It obviously doesn't appeal to everyone, but despite its ugly looks it plays extremely well. Great blend of old school and new school, with a simplistic yet challenging score system. We need more stuff like this.

Mushihime Sama: Damn you, DEL, for introducing this to me. It's the reason I finally bought a modded PS2. Original mode got me hooked like hardly any other recent game (except for Trizeal).

I also played Gradius V, R-Type Final, R-Type Delta, Raiden III, Sengoku Blade, Strikers 1945 II, Shienryu Explosion and Axelay since last year's vote, but they all failed to impress me. ESPGaluda and Game Tengoku I like a lot, but not quite enough to include them in my next top 25.

Three games I hadn't played before at the time of voting would make the list (and not just at the bottom too!):

Harmful Park: possibly even entering my top 10. My o my what a fantastic game. Bit on the easy side, but if you play on "hard" it is perfectly challenging too.

Zanac Neo: hey it's Zanac, but now feauring STUNNING visuals and a kick ass soundtrack! Following on the heels of Harmful Park.

Trizeal: though it won't rip apart my top 25 by any means it would probably make it.

Battle Bakraid. I just discovered this game and it ROCKS. It plays like a mix of Armed Police Batrider (my fav arcade shmup ever) with Battle Garegga.. its just amazing.

AND the graphics are much easier to make out!

It really does deserve more attention. I guess most are put off by the (quite frankly ridiculous) amount of suiciding that needs to be done for ultra high scores.

Playing just for the 1cc in either normal or advanced though, is one of the greatest pleasures available on mame IMO.

I am playing it like I always played Batrider and Garegga - By not giving a damn about scoring.

I never 1cc Garegga, but the 1st time I 1cc Batrider, I didnt even know what "Rank" was.

Everyone's talking about Batrider and Bakraid: Do you guys play these on MAME (about which I am totally ignorant). As I recall these do not have home ports. What a drag.

Yes, I play both on mame these days.

Though the 1st time I played batrider was on Raine. This was back in 2000 I think, Akira was the one who pointed out the game for me. I had a Pentium MMX 233 with 32 mbs of ram, and I had to play the game with no sound, with an average between 15-20 fps. My first 1cc in this game was with this setup :)

Batrider still ranks as my fav arcade shmup after all those years :)

Yeah, a serious drag. It's really too bad a "Raizing Shooting Collection" series never came out for the PS2. Think about it:

Raizing Shooting Collection vol. 1: Armed Police Batrider and Battle Bakraid
Raizing Shooting Collection vol. 2: Mahou Daisakusen and Dimahoo

Sure, they wouldn't have proper low rez, but still, I'd pony up 60 bones a pop for those...You listening, Taito?!

EDIT: Just remembered that Capcom published Dimahoo. Still...a Dimahoo/Progear double pack would be pretty cool.

I'm better at top 10s and 20s, let alone 25s. :P Anyways, in the past year, after buying a Progear No Arashi PCB and after the Mushi port, I can safely say both those games are ranked pretty high in my top 10. :) My current "all encompassing" top 5 for both enjoyment and impact on the genre itself is:

1.Radiant Silvergun

2.Battle Garegga

3.DDP

4.Gradius

5.R-TYPE

I'd be all over that one like stink on a monkey. It's likely too old to be ported. But Dragon Blaze got a port so who knows. Raizing is still in business (they do games for hudson, nintendo, and so on). So perhaps they could port it themselves or perhaps the ties they have from developing games for other companies would be helpfull. I don't even know if they still care about their shooter catalogue or ports. Batrider is really great.

Forgot to add, right on the money about Maniac mode. It's wonderfully balanced, easy to get into and yet so vicious. :)

A likely entrant into my next 25 is Trizeal. And Noiz2sa is under serious consideration pending further play...
