Can a creature be so monstrous, so horrific that merely looking at it might drive you insane? They say time heals everything, but apparently after looking at such a creature you progressively grow mad and paranoid enough to the point where you just want to end your torment with a bullet to the head.

This is a common theme in Lovecraftian works, but I wonder how humans would deal with that in real life. I imagine most people would just shrug off the experience after putting the creature down or running away from it.

I was thinking about some statistic a minute ago, then thought about Homer Simpsons claim that you can "prove anything even remotely true with statistics", then I remember the teacher of my statistics class in college -- he had a Level 7 mullet. This was 1996. Far beyond the statute of limitations on it being okay to have a mullet.

I feel like all the best survival shmups are hori while all the best scoring shmups are tate. Like even back in the NES days, Gradius was really compelling to play for survival but less so for score, whereas Twinbee with its bells was awesome for score but uninteresting for survival.

Kind of bummed that the line "Did you ever go clear?" in Leonard Cohen's "Famous Blue Raincoat" (one of my favorite songs freaking ever) is a reference to Scientology, to which Cohen - to his credit and detriment - was briefly aligned.

I'd assumed that it was referring to getting clean from drug addiction, which, although more psycho-physiologically dire, seems far more respectable than any Scientological status.

Oh well. I forgive you, L. Cohen.

Right now, about 21 years after Cray's target for GFLOP performance in 1992 for the Cray 4, my tiny desktop CPU pushes about half (edit: actually, anywhere from half to over the same amount) that number of GFLOPs, and my two-generation-old AMD 5850 hits sixteen times that mark, all while having vastly improved efficiency and supporting all kinds of wacky stuff to boot. But that's an old story...it's too bad nobody was there to ask if Cray had thought of using a diamond window to run CPU dies at full speed for extended periods while debugging (like Intel does). You can use thermal imaging to follow work being done within a chip.

Interesting historical notes and you can follow Cray's push to reduce linear dimensions and overall volume, and increase dimensions of connectivity. Too bad they didn't talk more about clock skew though, that's a technical one...

You sure that's Einstein? Last time I saw it attributed to Thos. Jefferson (of Jefferson Airplane fame).

Immortality is something everyone wishes to have at one point or another in their lives, but in pretty much every work of fiction, the immortal character only wishes one thing: to finally put an end to his misery.

If you think about it for a bit, immortality is actually a terrible curse.

I just found out I'm narcoleptic. Guess I've been dealing with it longer than I think, it's just gotten a little worse lately. Basically, the first time I stop moving around after awhile or if it doesn't keep my attention I'll pass out for a little while. Yesterday, after errands and putting away the groceries, I sat down and woke up a half hour later. You also start dreaming immediately. On the plus side I can now nap more often justifiably. A woman I know has lived with it for a long time, and has been super helpful.
My Dr. was basically, 'you don't drive and you're not falling asleep at work, you're good.' I work on my feet, so that's really not an issue at all. It's more that when I get home and sit down for the first time I'll just fall asleep while sitting there. If I ever lay down, forget about it - sleep.
I just kinda wanted to share, I'm going to keep it fairly private in real life, and only let my closest friends know. It's kind of like the whammy prize on the wheel of brain disorders.

Stumbled upon an article talking about the huge African Snails and how bad they can affect the ecosystem. Toward the end, it says "You should never pour salt over it, the osmosis will dehydrate the snail and kill it in a very cruel manner. Should you find one, use specific poisons to deal with it".

Wouldn't using poison be just as cruel? Besides, when you're trying to kill pests, the last thing you're worried about is how painful the method is.

In my home we have a bad case of flying termites, I kill them every day with a electric racket. Electrocution could be considered very cruel but it's by far the most efficient way to get rid of them.

So, do you know the reasons for the attack on the US Embassy in Libya last year? Surprise, it was what the Obama Administration said it was all along.

This surprise is occasioned by the announcement of a permanent dialogue program in honor of Chris Stevens, the US Ambassador who died in that attack.

I don't see why the options are so often polarised into immortal or not. I could totally go for a few centuries of youth.

Also, I've ordered some rather expensive marzipan on Amazon. Will report back.

I just want everyone to know that according to the bible (Exodus 33:20), Yahweh is a medusa.

It's important that you know this.

But," he said, "you cannot see my face, for no one may see me and live." I guess that could be interpreted that way, lol.

A couple of other quotes from the Bible that priests conveniently don't tell us:
Ezekiel 23:20 wrote:There she lusted after her lovers, whose genitals were like those of donkeys and whose emission was like that of horses.
Ezekiel 23:42-43 wrote:The noise of a carefree crowd was around her; Sabeans were brought from the desert along with men from the rabble, and they put bracelets on the arms of the woman and her sister and beautiful crowns on their heads. Then I said about the one worn out by adultery, 'Now let them use her as a prostitute, for that is all she is.'

Ever had a hangover so bad that you kinda wished you'd choked to death on your own vomit the night previous?

Yeah, today was one of those days. Now to slyly determine the content of all the drunk dialing calls I made.

^Those bible quotes are gold, btw. The donkey/horse thing has the aura of RegalSin about it.

Almost died the other day, was walking on the road with earphones on, usually I am careful enough to look before crossing or remove the earphones when crossing streets. I got a message from someone with whom my relationship has become very strained, which disturbed me a bit and I crossed the road without looking. WHOOOSH goes the car a few inches from my face. Few important things went through my head in moments after, things like my mom, my friends, my girlfriend, important moments of self, a couple of random things. And, hibachi's last pattern from DOJ was one on them.
