XRGB-3 damaged due to wrong SCART-Input

Post by Xenogears »

Damn. I connected my Sega Saturn to a SCART-Switchbox and then hooked it up to my XRGB-3 by 21-Japan-RGB. Now something must have gone haywire ! I got a red picture on the screen. After disconnecting the Switchbox and set my XRGB-3 to a direct connection by GAME IN again, it shows NO INPUT on the screen. Sometimes, the Game flickers in red and blue display... farewell my lovely unit.

Not yet. There must be a way to reanimate the system. Is there a way, that I can measure at TP to find out, what went wrong ? Please help !

You've probably "blown" the RGB input, by sending a wrongly wired SCART signal to it. This is a known problem when doing so..... if it is blown, you're knackered I'm afraid on that input.

So is there a way to check which part exactly is blown up and change it ? I suggest, its the Pioneer or Panasonic somewhat chip on the Baseboard V1.3 to the right ?

You could always get a RGB to VGA transcoder. I use the X-Select D4, which is out of production unfortunately, Fudoh can probably recommend a good one though.

You should first check if the whole RGB section has been blown or if you can still use the RGB input on the back (VGA port) for 15khz RGB signals. If that one still works, you're basically fine. You get the same quality there.

I did. The result is poor. No pic. I tested D1/D2 D3 by YUV - only if I connect e.g. my Game Cube on D2, I get a picture set to normal, BUT if I switch to D1 the screen shows the same.
RBG to VGA or VGA to VGA in leaves the screen blank and blue.

The XRGB´s menue is working so far. It changes, Resolution and puts a connectet PC through the PC IN / OUT Connector. The PCinP-Option is also dead.

So, there was a guy here in the Forum, who did the Chance of the Panasonic Video Chip. This is certainly tricky but even more, to get the chip (if this is the reason for my problem).

Thanks for your kind support

May the scanlines be with you !

would anyone care to elaborate how it is actually possible to instantly fry the xrgb?

i understand that the jp scart pinout is completely different, but we are talking 5V voltage here which shouldn't be sufficient to do any damage?

the xrgb is no consumer gear, but this kind of screams of bad design. at least i haven't heard about any other gear where you can insta-fry it with connecting an undmodded cable / connector of any sorts.

also - can you actually fry other jp gear by connecting an european cable? what about the other way round - is it dangerous to connect a jp scart cable to a european device, like a scaler or tv?

It's not the 5v's that is the problem (unless you bang 12v through it), as PIN16 is PIN16 regardless of country SCART specification.

It's probably pin 8 on the european scart cable which might be wired to some IC's ground pin on the XRGBs.

@Xenogears: for details on the IC sourcing and replacement, ask Konsolkongen.
