Awesome stuff you've just bought (+pics please)
Re: Awesome stuff you've just bought (+pics please)
I've got to know. The name Darius is pronounced "Dar-EE-us" in modern English, but the katakana keeps indicating it should be pronounced "Da-RAI-us".
Which one is the intended pronunciation?

Well, there isn't just an R in Japanese, and RA is one Katakana, so to romanize it you would have to have Da-ra-i-a-su. So yeah, it would be Da-ree-us. Leet JP speakers correct me if I'm wrong.ZacharyB wrote:I've got to know. That's what I'm confused about. Does that place special emphasis on the "EE"? It seems like the Japanese language could just use ダリアス ("da-ri-a-su") or ダリーアス ("da-riii-a-su") in that case... they already have that "REE" phoneme "リ".drauch wrote:Well, there isn't just an R in Japanese, and RA is one Katakana, so to romanize it you would have to have Da-ra-i-a-su. I just realized that it could also be ダーリアス or even ダーイアス, with that extended vowel implying an English "r". Maybe it's just a matter of taste.

Re: Awesome stuff you've just bought (+pics please)
I'm relatively certain that katakana would be pronounced da-rai-a-su, due to how a and i combine to sound like ai.
It'd be spelled da-ri-a-su instead of da-ra-i-a-su (sorry, no IME installed on this machine) if it were pronounced like we tend to say it.

Come check out my website, I guess. Random stuff I've worked on over the last two decades.
Re: Awesome stuff you've just bought (+pics please)
If the name Darius is in reference to the original historical figure / name, then it could very well be just a diffence in how the Japanese take it from Farsi compared to how it is anglicized. You see this a lot in foreign loan words in Japanese and the key is that while most usually are derived from English, things are often taken from their original language, Dutch, or Portuguese.
It gets confusing when the Dutch or Portuguese word is similar to the same word in English, and it seems like the Japanese just screwed up the transliteration when in fact it was never coming from the English word at all.

Bioshock Infinite Elizabeth figure. The neck is too long, but not too bad for Neca overall, and it's not like there are many to choose from.

Remember Me artbook. Actually arrived a week or so ago, just opened it and found the back of the spin is damaged so I'll be returning it for a replacement or refund. I absolutely loved the artwork in that game, many areas make a perfect screenshot.

And something with Reco on

Yeah, really hit or miss when going with NECA figures. They've produced some really great stuff, but also some of the worst figures I've ever seen designed for an adult collector. There really is no in between with NECA quality.

An Extron RGB 202 rxi, $15 shipped or so. The internal PSU pcb was shot, so I threw in one from my broken 150 xi, viola, fixed.

Now I just need to create a cable for the input and I can banish 480i from Mega Man 9/10..

I love the design and aesthetics of the earlier releases...just brings me back to a happier time of gaming when things were simpler and I appreciated gaming much more.

Inside the Mahjong Academy box is Mahjong Gakuen (not different from the normal release) and a really wacky promotion video on VHSSuperGrafx wrote:

For anyone wondering, they are marked as reprints, so you can pay an extra $100 a piece if you want the originals.

Oh, it's the S400. I have pair too (black/red) and I must say most of the time I prefer my Koss Porta Pro (Though the people over @ Head Fi seems to like 'em). They're just a more easy listen and more fun (I like the "fat" - probably bloated - lows). The JVC HA-S400s have so much more detail but I've come to understand with these headphones that a more neutral sound isn't what I'm personally after. I recommend getting some cheap soft foam pads like these ones to make them more comfortable. Just the stock pads hurt my ears...MOSQUITO FIGHTER wrote:New headphones that are surprisingly comfortable and block some outside noise. I've noticed that these are pretty unforgiving compared to the Koss headphones I usually use. Some of the Punk rock I listen to sounds unusually sparse on them for example. Still super nice for just $25.
That said - I do have a pair of S500s on their way to me. Hoping they have more of the sound signature I'm looking for

CHECKPOINT!

I'd totally agree on that. I do like how the Koss sound more. The JVC headphones seem to be more about just really accurate sound reproduction. More business than pleasure haha. They don't add much spice to anything. If I had a lot of headphones I'd probably just use the JVC headphones for like mixing or movie watching and stuff like that. They are totally comfortable to me stock though. I wore them all day yesterday with hardly any discomfort. I wear glasses too. Can't say that for any other pair of headphones I've worn in this style.Ji-L87 wrote:Oh, it's the S400. Re: Awesome stuff you've just bought (+pics please)
Squarepusher stuff got rare? I've some old Squarepusher promos etca friend left with me in something like 2001 (an utter guess). Not really my thing (though they've been spectacular every time I've seen them live), so the records lurk at the back of my record collection. Maybe I should pass them to a more loving home.
I've never thought of posting records in this thread, but buy a few each week, and these day's they're mostly just ragga/dancehall 7"s and breakcore 12" singles, so it might become a bit much!

I'll dig out what I can. Might even be white labels, so it might take a while (loving jungle, I have a fair pile of white labels. I even have a Chaos Engine OST remixes white label somewhere).

I actually paid for Music has the Right and Geogaddi not that long ago. I got them for far under their Ebay prices though. $60 for one and $70 for the other. I guess if I could have I'd just have waited for the reprints and gotten them substantially cheaper, but they've gotten a lot of plays, and of course I've got first print bragging rights. So yeah, not too bothered.Same-ish around here, got the 3 LPs from Boards of Canada.

Did you get Trans Canada Highway? Definitely not their strongest EP, but the Odd Nosdam remix makes it worth it. Really love his stuff -- check out Discogs/eMusic. Really great shit. He's even self-released a few freebies.
Weird one: Bleep's shipping to Japan is cheaper than the US.

EDIT: The Squarepusher was not a reprint. I just found it used for a decent price in a brick & mortar shop here.
