Use Emotia to force GBP 480i - 240p?

Post by BitFaced »

Could I simply get a cheap Emotia unit, use 480i RGB from a GameBoy Player (convert it through something like a Sync Strike) and convert it to 240p?

No. Didn't you ask that before ? Well, somebody did - multiple times.

You can go CUBE > COMPONENT CABLES (480p) > COLOR TRANSCODER -> EMOTIA > TV for 240p.

I can't remember, I assume 480i wouldn't work because it's not an original 240p source?

480i doesn't work because the Emotia just won't accept. It's a PC to TV converter, meaning 31khz or higher to 15khz.

So no unit at all for downscaling 480i to 240p? (in case I've got the wrong name)

sure, any Extron RGB interface ($20-$30) if your TV plays along. We've got threads on that as well....

Ah. I see.
(And I'll also try to search for pre existing threads before making a topic next time.)

It's not so easy to use the search engine to find something like this.

Try this one for starters: http://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=36914

One more question: Can I use an RGB SCART - CGA cable like:

To link the RGB SCART 480i GBP to the Extron RGB or will I need a Sync Strike?

depends on your source(s). You need clean sync into the Extron.

Well I thought it'd be a simple SCART->D-Sub cable for something like the RetroPix (with say, a PS1 RGB SCART cable). But I guess an NGC RGB SCART cable from http://www.consolegoods.co.uk/ might need clean sync for something like an Extron RGB?

Also, I'm wondering if I should definitely be doing this for the Game Boy Player, as its original 480i image might leave flickering lines.

Flickering through this kind of conversion occurs when the odd and even fields are not just unaltered 240p frames, but filtered, blurred or from an actual hi-res image. Taking into account the filtered nature of the GBA player's output, you'd likely end up with a little bit of flicker after all.

If you have the neccessary setup, I'd recommend you try an Emotia setup instead. 480p to 240p is the safer way and the results are known to be good (did it myself).

Makes me wonder if you can use an Extron RGB on an RGB/TV de Advance RGB-modded GBA, but you'd probably still have scrolling issues, right?
Also, what does 240p-forced GBP look like when the GBP is set to the "full-screen" (or at least fuller) option? Does it still suffer from being blown up visually?

probably. Might even look sharper than from a GBA player. And yes, the scrolling issues would remain.

like shit. Even worse than it does on a 480p screen. Whenever you do a scan conversion, up or down, maintaining a proper 1:1, 1:2 or 2:1 mapping of the lines is the most important thing.

Both options sound like double-edged swords. GBA to TV sure is tricky.

Gearing a little off-topic but this I think is related to the NGC-Component in some way:
