Honestly the filter in Mushihime gave me a headache within 15 minutes. I was playing on a Commodore 1084S.
Good. Bad. I'm the guy with the gun.

If you are already used to playing PCB's through a supergun which displays a fuzzy image, then yeah, lowres port probably means nothing to you. But I'm not looking forward to all the sprite tearing of an interlaced tate'd picture especially since Ibara is known to have copious amounts of small shrapnel flying around.

And Neon, I don't know why you keep saying this is an impossible feature to ask for, it would actually be easier for them to just render in a lowres mode then to have to ADD code to upscale and filter for an interlaced picture. I'm sure this is just because their current library/toolset allows them to do the port quicker if they render everything with their pre-coded interlaced mode (which almost all PS2 games use). But this game is not for the "masses", its for a very specific target audience. Arika understood their target audience, horizontal mode is interlaced, fine for people with regular TVs, but tate mode is non-interlaced low res, for people who actually have tate'd RGB monitors.

So in some respects, yes, maybe we are lucky to even have interlaced tated mode. GWG being something they obviously got bad market feedback on, thus Mushi gets a quick and dirty interlaced tate mode. Yes better than no tate.

I want the exact arcade game, not another one.
I want the arcade game but I'd love it to have an arrange mode too. Arrange modes double the playability of the game and sometimes I even prefer them to the arcade versions. Especially if the Ibara arrange mode made it play like a 'traditional' Cave game rather than a Raizing-Cave mixture that I understand this game is.

I used to cound myself as a shmup player, but if I am honest with myself, whilst I do own most shmups out there, it's really only the cave ones that get me real excited. Maybe that sounds like fanboyism? But it's my preference....

This is a great idea! Isn't it, Plasmo?
Btw, Ibara is actually 100% Raizing, not a Raizing-Cave mixture.

Glad to hear it did some decent sales and that the complaints may be somewhat exageratted.
Raizing lives. :D
Indeed. And now their Jedi ghost is about to unleash a vicious little thing on 'net shmup noobs known as...rank. mwahahahaha Seriously though, I am really looking forward to playing this and seeing how Shinobu Yagawa's efforts pay off in a Cave environment.

BTW, is Mr. Wakabayashi a programmer/artist or is he more of a supervisor/executive? And what was his role in Mushi? Just curious.

zlk wrote: The pcb version of mushihime sama also has slowdown, but I find that the ps2 version is easier to play. On the other hand, the ps2 versions of ESPG/DOJ seem to play exactly the same as the pcbs.
There are more slowdowns in PCB's Maniac. And the game is a little slower in some points (like the beginning of the third stage, if I remember good). I don't know precisely about Original (and Ultra) but a friend says that original in PCB is a little harder than the PS2 one.
Anyway, nothing that can make me scream that the port is so bad, except the first attack of the fourth boss, there is a little change on the pattern there, totally senseless.
Just wanted to say that both these points are very interesting, thanks.

It's been rumoured here and there for ages that they do this - I've never seen any compelling evidence though, as the games frequently drop frames and slow down unexpectedly - Mushi especially in PCB form. For added amusement run 2 player and it gets even worse.

-That-, is the hardware throttling, not graceful control at all.

Only because you're too scared to try it ^_-

I just find it funny how the thought of suicidal play puts so many people off what are the best games I've ever come across. Shmups throughout history have conditioned players to think that a 1LC is the holy grail, when to me, scoring is important, regardless of what strategies need to be employed.

Nothing is more satisfying than 1CC'ing a game with a new personal high score, knowing I've blown myself up more than 50 times on purpose ^_-

At any rate, I look forward to participating in many many arguments between the "rank rules! and "rank sucks!" camps come release date. ^_-

Shinobu Yagawa was chief programmer I believe (given that the game plays more like Garegga and it's brethren). Wakabayashi-san was supervisor/art director.

This is fantastic news. Next to an arcade perfect port of the game I'd really appreciate new features and modes like Raiden III is offering them, as it really adds up to the experience.

Who was it that told me this would never happen? Was it LoneSage?

HA!

By the way, someone help me out with the title... all I know is that "ba ra" is "rose."

Nice news for all the fans craving for some new Raizing influenced new shmups.

It looks pretty enough and all that and the sisters are looking hoy.
That said I am giving it a miss for the moment and am not preordering for once.
Impressions are very mixed, and I am gonna wait till a while after first impressions to decide whether I'll get it after all or not. If he general concensus is favourable enough I migh cave though.

Still haven't taken time to give Mushi a more prolonged play either, so I'd better concentrate on that one a bit more for the moment. :)

It's another word game, like Dodonpachi.

"Ibara" means briers or brambles in Japanese, referring of course to the gang of deceptively sexy boss biyatches in the game.

However it is spelled differently in the title, "bara" of course means rose(s), and the character for "i" can also be read "sen", which was a subdenomination of the yen, back in the olden days before inflation, and refers of course the the small coins you collect for scoring in the game.

Ibara being "less popular" is speculation started from the rapid price drop of the PCB. According to figures from Arcadia and River Service, the profit in the arcade was about even with Mushihime (1:1 timescale), and well above other recent shooters.
Was also based on people not really playing it in the arcades. Remember, Mushi was only a lukewarm Cave hit as well, compared to ESPGaluda, DOJ, Ketsui, etc.

I actually knew that Ketsui didn't do so well, and Mushihime did, instead. Still, they're porting Ibara and there's project Ibara 2 (well, ok, a second game by Yagawa). Beside that, is it really important? :?

I usually never see anyone playing Ibara, but now that I've moved near an arcade that has Ibara as one of its only two shmup cabs, people seem to be playing it a lot more than I remembered. It's even growing on me!

That said, it seems like Mushi has gotten a lot more arcade play. I often see it around at various arcades and last time I was at HEY there was about 2-3 mushi cabs with only one Ibara cab.

But, who cares? I'm really looking forward to this home release!

Ah, thank you, sir.

I always get thrown off by the Japanese language when the word play comes into effect. My fault for not exposing myself to it often enough, I suppose.

How close does the gameplay resemble Bakraid/Garegga? Meaning, do you have to constantly die to control rank?

...and in Bakraid, suiciding is only for extending your chains. You don't need to suicide if you are just playing it as a straight blaster.

Neon wrote:It's pretty much guaranteed not to.

We'll be getting a lot fewer ports if the demand for 'true low res' gets high. Would you rather the games not be ported at all?

This is so ridiculously minor. Everyone needs to get bent already.
It's not minor, but there's so little concern in the industry for maintaining native res that we don't really have a choice anymore. Owning Cave PCBs is not feasible for me, so I will continue to buy their PS2 ports, scaling and interlacing and all.

Discussion over how faithful a port is should always be welcome, however, regardless of how much of a choice we have.

I predict...

that Ibara will cause the fiercest fights ever on the issue of rank, and the Ragnarok of rankists (the forces of absolute good, of course!) vs rank-despisers (so evil they would steal candies from kiddos while singing hymns to Karl Rove and Yog-Sototh!) will thus herald the end of an era and the birth of a new world!

Personally, i'll enjoy the useless debates while slapping BM (because he's the root of evil!!1! * ) and slap anyone who will still confuse ranking (i.e. the high-score chart) with rank.

*Ok, i'm kidding, hugs and kisses to BM

its funny, the first time i saw a replay of battle garegga , i thought the player was cheating. ^_^

after understanding more about extend handouts and scoring, i gained a new respect for raizing. i think i like raizing more, but would rather play a cave game... as awful as that sounds. :?

Agreed. It just seems like such a waste to not buy a game which is almost certain to be badass because of a graphical issue that doesn't effect gameplay.

I reckon it is enjoyment-effecting for some people, but there's always the PCB if it's that big of a deal...everyone should own a supergun or cab for Super SF2 Turbo anyways ^_^
