I don't see what is next-gen about this, but I appreciate how they are thinking about loyal playstation fans who subscribe to PS+ and have preordered PS4.

There's a certain rather large forum where people go gaga over that exploding voxel gif. They post it over and over and over again in PS4 related threads. I find it funny that people can be so impressed by that.

Re: RESOGUN (PS4)
Am I the only one who thinks a game can exist on a next-gen system without being a crazy graphical powerhouse? Like, Housemarque wanted to make a new shooter, PS4 was coming out, they had ties to Sony, so they made it for PS4. I mean, I wouldn't exactly say that Geometry Wars, Raiden Fighters, or DDP DOJ really push the 360 to the limit, but they're 360 games and they're incredible.

Re: RESOGUN (PS4)
Not the point - DOJ and Raiden Fighters are great independent of the platform - as long as the implementation is sound.Special World wrote:Am I the only one who thinks a game can exist on a next-gen system without being a crazy graphical powerhouse?
RESOGUN is getting a lot of attention right now because it is a PS4 launch game - it would most likely get a lot less attention is it was being launched on the PS3 PSN this week. As a PC gamer I knew why I was chasing the next "rig" - because it would me let play games that could not technically run on my current rig. Once I left that behind it became ALL about the games - not the technology. A single game can be worth the purchase of a console if that game will generate entertainment and enjoyment for a long time to come. However "launch games" are rarely in that category - so really it makes little sense to buy a console at its priciest and most immature.
The resentment is typically leveled against launch games that don't utilized the launch console's inherent capabilities to the full extend but instead uses the appeal of the game itself to sell the console - when in fact the game could immediately be enjoyed (and still make money) by a much broader audience on a more accessible platform. This case is even weirder as Sony is giving RESOGUN free to Plus members - almost as if they don't expect it to sell that well - but it is something nice and flashy that new PS4 owners should enjoy for about 2 minutes ...
("Geometry Wars" first appeared as a mini game in Project Gotham 2 on the original Xbox).
Re: RESOGUN (PS4)
At the developer's conference at EG Expo Housemarque were quizzed about it... and couldn't confirm or deny. So yeah, I expect it on Vita, and it will be a great reason to finally buy one. Resogun is really awesome.HydrogLox wrote:RESOGUNΔ on the Vita (TV) almost seems inevitable though ...Special World wrote:I'm sure they could do this on PS3 but I mean... the PS3 is dying, and it doesn't make any sense to do that?

That does look pretty great. I hope they go all-out with those bullet-shooting enemies. I'd love for there to be proper waves of bullets to dodge through on some levels.

Re: RESOGUN (PS4)
That's the first time I see the game in action, and it's looking like the PS4's most appealing exclusive so far. Not too fond of the art style, but it looks fun to play and that's what matters the most. Losing the entire multiplier on death seems a bit harsh though; I think losing the end of level no-miss and max multiplier bonuses is punishment enough for dying.linko9 wrote:http://v.giantbomb.com/2013/11/11/vf_re ... 3_4000.mp4

Re: RESOGUN (PS4)
Personally I was really disappointed when Geometry Wars 2 allowed you to keep your multiplier on dying. I think having the multiplier reset with each death makes each life feel much more important, like it has infinite potential. But I guess if this has proper levels, then that could make a difference. It's a fair design choice though, imo.

Re: RESOGUN (PS4)
Looks like it could be really great with a few tweaks. Not sure I like all enemies in a formation firing simultaneously, making uninteresting clumps of bullets. Also suicide bullets, meh. I'd like to see something more creative here. In any case, it appears that cranking up the difficulty will be a must here.

Re: RESOGUN (PS4)
Apparently the difficulty is being adjusted, I think I read that in one of the reviews. I imagine it's not being adjusted the way you want it to be though, they're trying to target the casuals.

Re: RESOGUN (PS4)
The game plays really really well (they kept fine tuning it to the very last minute, some of the videos out there may be quite outdated).
Resogun was originally inspired by datastorm on amiga but Cave's shooters also had a huge influence.
The lead coder of resogun is a HUGE fan of Cave and he talked me into getting Xbox360 just to play deathsmiles (which I don't regret)
I really think that resogun is great shmup, but I may be biased since I work at housemarque - although I'm not on the resogun team.

Re: RESOGUN (PS4)
Genuinely bummed that I'm not going to play this tomorrow. Amazon goofed on my order and the system won't arrive til Tuesday. Oh well, I preordered four months ago-- what's an additional four days?
Re: RESOGUN (PS4)
I'm liking this. Some review somewhere likened it to Defender. With 8 humans to save on each level, it's a curious take on the genre, but it's cool. Obviously the focus is on the visuals, but we're all going to look at scoring and it's got a cool balance. Difficulty levels change your max combo (novice maxes out at 5x, highest difficulty is 20x). Balancing the goal of keeping your combo meter going while zipping to the other half of the level to save a human can be tricky at first. It feels a bit like SSD, even though it's clearly so different. Remote playing is good too, and on my home wi-fi (never tested it out and about, have low expectations for that) it's responsive and fun. Not as good as SSD, I fear, but I've only managed to beat the first 3 levels. Bosses are as you'd expect them to be from Housemarque. Good, fun stuff.
Re: RESOGUN (PS4)
I have been playing it since Friday. I think it really is the best game on PS4 at the moment. The difficulty scales up or down quite nicely for players of all skill levels. I never played Defender before, so this gameplay mechanic was very new to me. After a few hours, I feel I have trained myself to think in terms of saving humans instead of just killing anything that moves.

Re: RESOGUN (PS4)
Played this a lot over the weekend. I'm curious to learn the intricacies of the scoring system. The Nemesis ship seems ridiculously strong unless there's some downside I'm missing (e.g. scoring), due to those homing missiles.
EDIT: Okay, Nemesis has a much lower shot power to compensate. And since screen-clearing Overdrives seem to be pretty key to scoring, Phobos is probably very useful.

Bllllaaaaaahhhh and hard meh. This is basically what the first few years of shmup releases looked like for the previous generation.

I really enjoyed Super StarDust HD made by the same studio (Housemarque) and of course I'm interested in Resogun. Hoping here to sell well and encourage other studios to develop new shmups for the systems of new generation.

Re: RESOGUN (PS4)
Still figuring out how this game works, exactly, but I'm enjoying it quite a lot. I *love* the sound of the announcer's voice coming out of my controller and the liquid like visual distortions. Wow. This is indeed next gen in a way that I didn't expect at all.
Re: RESOGUN (PS4)
The announcer's voice was far too loud at first. I turned that down. The settings for controller speaker volume weren't under Audio/Video settings for some reason. I plugged in my headphones to the controller and the game sounded spectacular. I have 4 kids, so I don't get a chance to turn up the volume very frequently. With headphones, it was great!
Still digging this, however hard it may be. Still haven't figured out the point system...losing your chain seems more detrimental than letting your humans die, but that simply can't be possible.

Standard headphones can plug into the controller? Re: RESOGUN (PS4)
Really addicted to this game, but I still suck, with my high on the first stage being 5.4 million.
The only complaint I have about it is how they handle the humans. I get the whole "kill the keepers to rescue a human" thing, but they also throw in a seemingly random requirement for one (or more?) human like killing keepers in a certain order (2nd stage) or having your multiplier above a certain level at a certain time (1st stage). It sort of feels random and i'm often finding myself wondering why or when one of my humans died. Very frustrating.
That aside, this game is awesome. The graphics are nice and all, but it's really the old school arcade simplicity that I love about it.
Feel free to friend me on PSN; name: soupbones

Just started playing Resogun tonight / early this morning.
I suck at it though it's addictive as heck and looks so soooo nice on my 1080p LED.
Makes me want more next gen shmups of high quality and I'm prepared to buy them.

Re: RESOGUN (PS4)
That's because the counter doesn't make any difference between secret humans and normal collected humans. Proper way to present it would be something like 6/6+2 humans collected, where [+2] would indicate the secret humans. This is something that will be fixed in the patch, I think.soupbones wrote:

I'm not a royalist. But here in the UK at least our royal family have good taste in genres, because here is Prince fucking William playing Resogun earlier today with a mate of mine from Sony (I wasn't there).

EDIT: I'm guessing this means he's a lurker here on the forum!
