Neo Geo MVS > NGCD ports

Post by Neon »

There was a thread over on Neogeo.com where a guy claimed to have ported 4 MVS games to CD, with more on the way.

Why would we want this? To be able to play neogeo games on Dreamcast (w/faster loads than a standard CD console) and PSP!

My question is, can the entire library be ported? If perhaps the emu is tricked into 'thinking' the NGCD has more ram...or something...

Also, will there be any more of these ports? The site seems to be down.

Where's the tread on neogeo.com?

Is this possible yet!? I thought NGCD emulation for DC was still in the works.

It's been working for about a year, it's just recently though it's gotten GOOD. Like dramatically short load times, runs at a good speed, you can use that ASCII stick, etc.

I would think the only practical use for these ports would be to run them on your Dreamcast. Otherwise you could just get the MVS cartridges for not that much compared to AES.

Though I guess it's also cool because of how the majority of NeoCD releases have several frames of animation cut compared to their MVS counterparts, thouhg some of them have extras not on the MVS versions, arg.

Yes, there were people porting certain MVS games to NGCD, but I'm not sure if they're still doing it. As far as NGCD emulation on Dreamcast, it's come a long way, but it's still not perfect. It's impressive from an emulation point of view though, and will probably improve a bit.

the games that have been converted into neocd format are the only ones that are small enough to do so.

Games like Metal Slug 3 would never be able to 'become' and neocd game from this conversion simply because it is way too big. Only chance would be to hack the rom to have various loading points, and no one really wants to do that.

Neogeo cd emulation on Dreamcast isn't perfect because it's still quite new. But there are many games that run perfectly with no frameskip like MS1+2, viewpoint, last resort, kof 99, most of the samurai showdowns and fatal fury titles, and more. most issues with the emulation are games playing too fast and improper burning of the games. Very few games i've tested run too slow.

Too much effort? It seems like it wouldn't take too long to load on DC/PSP...perhaps the emu could take advantage of the extra memory on those systems as well...

That wouldn't be possible without breaking compatibility - and if you did, the game code wouldn't take advantage of it anyway, so you'd need to change that (which, at this magnitude, borders on impossibility)
...and suddenly, a very freaky wormhole opened, and 4 3-foot tall market analysts fell out...

There are some Neo games that are too big to fit on a CD, so would have to be fiddled with.
Be attitude for gains:

And a shameless plug for the stuff I'm selling on eBay, if you're into that sort of thing.
