USA Gamecube Chaos Field shmup delayed again...

Post by PC Engine Fan X! »

I went to my local Gamestop to see if they had gotten a shipment of the newest shmup game of Chaos Field for the Gamecube console. Last time I checked, they said it would be in on November 16th, 2005. It is now November 17th, 2005 and was told that it had been delayed again until December 14th, 2005. I'll be getting a reservation in for a copy indeed.

December 15th was probably always the date. Gamestop and other such companies make dates up as filler when the official word is usually "Q4 2005" and such.

Also this is an O~3 Entertainment release, RESERVE this, I work at a Gamestop and even I reserved it. :P

Yeah, I went to GameStop tonight and they were telling me mid Dec., while EB Games didn't even have it listed. I would preorder it if I didn't dislike these stores so much.

Eh, if you reserve it the store will actually get several copies in, through word of mouth you could make the game popular in your area. I did this with Alien Hominid and the Megami Tensei games released here recently.

I don't know if it works this way everywhere, but EB up here in Canada takes the shrink wrap off, puts disks behind the counter, then puts them back in and puts some tape over the case - for a new game. Drives me absolutely nuts. I'd rather get it from Walmart or Amazon.ca.

That happens at the EB and Gamestop around here, but only for the last copy of a game. I got lucky at the local EB for River City Ransom EX and Racing Gears Advance. They had one last copy of both games that I saw behind the counter and still in shrinkwrap too. There was no display box for either of them.

That drives me insane too. Plus the way they store the discs in plastic sleeves, you inevitably end up with some small scratches on them, it's incredibly annoying. And they sell them as 'new products'. Thank you so much EB...

The Gamestop I got Soul Calibur II from took the game out of a plastic sleeve with the game in between the manual. The game only had minor scratches on it and it works great, but it was still annoying, especially since it was supposed to be new.

I wouldn't be surprised if it never came out...

Something else they get small scratches from is getting passed around from employee to employee. Last copy=free rental for associates.

For any Canucks on the board: I just received an email from O3 about the Canadian release date:
Dear Mr. Hamarskald,
Thanks for your interest in O~3 and our products. Chaos Field will be in Canadian stores the second week of December.
Best regards,
O~3 Entertainment
So, us GC owners don't get Ikara, but at least we're getting some shmup love!

With Airforce Delta Strike, I didn't even get the tape! :? The disc was also scracthed (but luckily works) like a brand new one wouldn't be. :?

Seriously, I've never tried it, but there are so few shmups being released lately that I've gotten desperate. Case in point: ordered the Shikigami no Shiro EX/2 pack on play-asia the other day without having played either.

So: is Chaos Field really that bad? I'll most likely buy it anyway to help boost sales (and show that shmups *do* have a market in North America), but I'd still like to know what I'm getting myself into.

Read Rando's review on the main shmups.com site, I tend to agree with just about everything he says there, including the final rating.

Why do I doubt that :D

Chaos Field is pretty average...an appropriate budget title. If you're buying it out of drought and desperation though, your money would be better put towards something like a JPN PS2 or DC. Gamecube is no shmupping system.

It may not be the best shmupping system, but that doesn't mean that all shmups for it should be avoided. I heard the version of Castle Shikigami 2 for it is nifty and, though not perfect, Ikaruga is not a bad port, especially if you are using standard composite. Not much reason to get it if you have the DC one, though. Of course, Castle Shikigami 2 turned out great on other systems and is cheaper on those too, though. The GameCube is definatly not the system to get for shmups, but, thankfully, other genres are resprented a bit better. PS2 is good for shmups, but the Saturn, PS One, MD, or PC Engine is argubly better for shmups than the DC, though the shmup lineup on DC is very good.
