How do the Vic Viper, Axelay, and Twinbee perform in...

PS2 Airforce Delta Strike? Do these craft have any of the weapons that they do in their respective shmup games? And what do you have to do to unlock them?

I read on here somewhere that they are unlockables in this game, so I'm wondering if this game would be worth getting, rather then a game in the Ace Combat series.

I know, I've played 'em before; I'm just really curious about Airforce Delta Strike's unlockable line-up of retro craft.

EDIT: Found this information from the "Gradius Base": www.classicgaming.com/gradius/cameo.html :

"One of them is Vic Viper, complete with Ripple Lasers. In addition, whenever you fly a mission piloting it, the background music will change to "Free Flier", the level four music from the original Gradius. In addition, while piloting any plane, pause the game and input the classic Konami Code. With the familiar "Insert Coin" sound from the Gradius games, your plane will regain full health and missiles... before immediately self destructing, a la SNES Gradius 3!"

Interesting, so the Vic Viper, at least, has one of it's traditional shmup weapons intact!

Well, I decided to get the game, and in some ways it's more arcade-style then the Ace Combat series-enemies take multiple hits like they would in a traditional shooter, and the variety of aircraft is very cool! Plus, the way the different characters trash-talk each other is pretty funny!

When I sold my copy, I didn't get the chance to unlock Axelay,

but Vic Viper has it's ripple laser while the main vulcan is actually the twin laser, only brown.

Twinbee was so good in one of the missions, there was this one mission where you had to destroy as many battleships/cruisers as possible within the time limit, and with Twinbee, I almost destroyed every single ship in the ENTIRE MAP, leaving only like 3 behind, and I got at least $1.4million as a reward..... and the MX5000 aircraft.

Nice, so I take it Twinbee has at least some of it's traditional weapons intact?

While we're on the subject of PS2 flight games, how's the Lethal Skies series? I really wish there was a PS2 game that actually made good use of the Top Gun movie license. I've read that PS1 Top Gun: Fire At Will does, but I've also read that it's a horrible game.

Finally, what about Sega's Aero Elite: Combat Academy? I've read that all the craft in that one control like they're made of bricks!

Well, if you like the Vic Viper, it is also available as an unlockable in Zone of The Enders 2 for the PS-2.

Basically it's a transformable Lev-Mech that can change from plane to Mech mode & it also has the blue ripple weapon in plane mode.

Don't know about the other sims, but I'll tell you that Lethal Skies are basically PAL versions of the AFD series.

You know those three ships mentioned aren't the only ones featured in the game. Imagine ships from every single Konami shmup that existed.

Ehh? I played the first Lethal Skies at Game Crazy last week, and was blown away by the graphics and gameplay!

Just got PSX Top Gun: Fire At Will yesterday, and I'd have to say that it is THE most underrated PSX game ever released! The FMV scenes with James Tolkan are very well done, and the game has even more of an arcade feel to it then Air Combat. Definately a great game, and the fact that it's the only Top Gun video game to maximize the move license makes it that much more fun! :D

No they are not. The PAL versions of the AFD series are called Deadly Skies.
