Geometry Wars.
Not literally what you asked for, but give Warning Forever a try too.

heh I know Geometry Wars (Very well) just wondered if there were any others recently that I have missed.

Plentiful freeware (GridWars) and Gridrunner Revolution. If not scrolling, then at least shooting is multi-directional.
AirMech may not be a pure-bred shooting game, but is playable with a gamepad (much like Herzog Zwei).

I was just interested in playing a game a bit like thunderforce 1 but more up to date. Thanks for the suggestions.

I don't know if these are what you're looking for, but...

Ballistic, Inferno and Joy Joy from radiangames for XBLIG. Score Rush applies too, I guess.
Super Stardust HD, Everyday Shooter, Blast Factor and both PixelJunk Shooters for PSN.
Every Extend Extra Extreme has a mode called R4 that seems decent enough.

I prefer all of the above to the overestimated Geometry Wars.
