Personally, I think the best way to figure out the "best soundtrack" would be to have a series of bracketed elimination rounds. For example, Raiden vs Raiden II, Gradius 2 vs Gradius 3, DDP DOJ vs DDP DFK, and so on, with the majority vote winning each matchup. I'll give this some thought and come back with my votes.

If you pair 2 games against each other and one of them has to be eliminated, then it wouldn't be a true "best soundtrack", as both games should have the chance to make it in the top, if they get enough votes. Say Raiden gets 4 votes, Raiden II gets 5, and then DOJ gets 9 votes and DFK gets 8. Should DOJ and Raiden II be the ones that come out on top?

Yes. I rather like the idea because I don't feel like I need to have played every STG under the sun to vote. I could just vote on the pairs I've played, like those ones.

Are you sure? Last I knew Kiki Kaikai and its home sequels were considered on-topic here. I'd assumed Shock Troopers would make it in too, being mechanically identical (push-scrolling multidirectional overhead run-and-gun with a melee element). Not that I like to rock the "what is shump? baby don't hurt me" boat.

That's a hell of an OST at any rate. I still don't know what the sampled Jamaican says in 2-2 while I get to knifing and machinegunning balaclava-clad terrorists but I like what I'm hearing.

Must spend this weekend splitting up my votes a bit. Too many great soundtracks to have just four. Interesting point ZacharyB made about Dragon Saber containing the full soundtrack of Dragon Spirit as its second, secret BGM. Would be a good way to fit both into the same vote.

I know what you mean. Of all the top-down run 'n' guns I know, it's the most shmup-like (or 'schmup'-like ). But even so, I don't think they'll be enough votes for it for it to be worth me opening the borderline floodgates!

Of course, if heisenbergman wants to give me the thumbs up for editing my list so as to add Shocktroopers, I'll cope! (No worries if not).

I feel like I haven't given Gun Frontier that much attention, but after spending more time with the game, I now realize how much I love the soundtrack. I love the melancholy feeling in Stages 1, 2, 4, and 5, those tracks are so good it sends chills down my spine. This game also has the closest sounding soundtrack to Ashura Blaster, which I also love just as much. Those two games have some of the best sad sounding music tracks I've seriously ever heard in my entire life. Taito hardware music like this is just so good, I can't express it. Also this remix of Gun Frontier's Stage 1 is pretty good.

I wonder why there are so little entries on this thread. OSTs are a huge part of shmups for me, I would think that people would be more vocal about their choices.
