Watched the 5th episode of Kill la Kill [with DameDame subs, of course -- they're silly and rather rewritten, but the show is better this way ].

Thankfully, not absolutely atrocious like the fourth episode, which was literally only enjoyable with the DameDame troll subs. That new guy with the needle gun looks way too much like Kittan from TTGL.

Not looking for weird so much, more dark, secretive anime with crazy build up and "What a twist" moments. Lain and Madoka would be the two I could point towards, since I've seen so little anime.

Phantom: Requiem for the Phantom sort of fits the bill.

The mecha featured in the Five Star Stories anime film, especially "The Knight of Gold" is quite impressive with it's exotic weaponry. The advanced technology that mankind had developed is powered by sunlight but yet, wields such destructive firepower, it's best used by someone whom is skilled enough to wield that type of damage.

The USA region ThinPak DVD release of FSS was cool for it's time...it's presented originally in Japanese with English subtitled text indeed. It comes with a liner note of chronology list of events that take place after the current events shown in the film just to give the viewer a sample taste of what FSS has to offer. The FSS garage kits are legendary with their attention to detail, proper form and fetch some serious yen on the secondary market. I recall paying the Suncoast asking price of $34.99 USD for the Region 1 FSS DVD back in the day (and worth every penny).

Yowamushi Pedal goes all out on the crazy Anime fan hating once again after the credits in episode 5. Either they are really good at writing this crap, or the creators really hate Otaku culture. Either way, besides that they are doing a good job giving just enough excitement each episode to leave you wanting more.

well I finally watched it, and I fucking loved it, I also don't think it's as disjointed and or hard to follow as people often say (though I had read 2 chapters of the manga beforehand).

This along with F91 is one of those ones I will always wish they had made more of .

The art was utterly and completely beautiful, the design was so imaginative and different it blew me away. I actually usually don't like the more 'fantastical' mecha (robot) designs and usually veer more towards the less outlandish designs, but even I was just literally awestruck by the Knight Of Gold's reveal.

In terms of movies or OVAs and in terms of sheer beautiful art I would definitely put this up in my top 5 or so now with Venus Wars, Macross: DYRL?, Bubblegum Crisis OVA, Gunbuster OVA and Patlabor II.

I'm on episode 10 of GE999 - as they approached the flower planet type thing (Nono Hara), I got a real feeling of wonderment and magic and I felt a sort of deja vu and I realised that it's that feeling I got when I first saw (and still do get if I'm honest) Charlie And The Chocolate Factory, and he steps out the door into that magical garden with the chocolate river; quite literally pure imagination. GE999 has lots of these bits for me.

Back on the topic of Gundam 0080:

One part I like of this particular story was that Mobile Suits don't just explode into a ball of fire when 'downed', but are shredded and damaged to show off how unpredictable things can get on the battlefield.
It wasn't just "shot down and they explode", but it goes as far as showing the collateral damage caused such as accidental gunshots from a downed MS among other various gritty details.

And it worked well, considering how character-driven 0080 is meant to be so action scenes can be drawn out to show off these small details.


In terms of beautiful animation and action which screams 90s OVA quality, I would highly recommend 0083: Stardust Memory.

I also finished watching all three of the Hare+Guu anime. It was so hillarious but I can't help but feel that there's a fourth one I don't know about because of the way the last one ended. (even though it's called "final")

Like the supposed "Final Fantasy", an obvious continuation (in some form) will happen if profitable/exploitable.

What's the best way for people outside of Japan to get their hands on digital versions of Manga?

Is there some sort of central digital bookstore that the Japanese used or is this kind of thing really fragmented depending on the publisher.

Looking for it to be in Japanese and for something like an iPad or Kindle maybe.

Picked up the new Yozakura Quartet lest I started doing something productive with my time or watching the decent stuff in my backlog, mostly because the character designs looked cool(haven't watched the original one btw).
Pretty unimpressive stuff about youkai and humans living together, with boatloads of ecchi and some harem and slice of life undertones. At least the school setting is more than secondary and barely ever mentioned apart from some characters wearing school uniforms 24/7.

People have been talking wonders about that, gotta watch it when I can.

I know that Kickstarter isn't just a pre-order, but Animeigo are the same company who licensed the series on VHS back in the 90s, so they have a long track record.

I've had the Japanese Blu-ray set of Bubblegum Crisis for a while now, but I have no qualms tossing a fifty their way for this “Ultimate Edition”. Especially as the Japanese version is so bare bones (like the majority of their overpriced BD unfortunately).

Not the biggest fan of Animeigo’s work though tbh. Many of their video releases over the years have just been plagued with poor choices, from low bit-rates, boosted contrast & colors, post-filters or excessive use of DNR, it seems to be a bit of a crapshoot with them as to the quality of the final product. Granted they can only do so much with the source material but that’s still no excuse for what they’ve done to stuff like Macross and the Lone Wolf and Cub Blu-ray.
Reading the comments on the kickstarter page it looks as if they’ll end up using 3 50gb BD discs (JPN version was on two) with all the supplementary material on a disc by itself. This would be the best course of action so as to not compromise the overall bit-rate of the OVA. There's also talks of a could be HD telecine transfer of A.D Police getting an inclusion if they reach some unspecified goal but I don’t really see that happening. I'd prefer to see it's very own release anyway.

I think $100k was the figure mentioned for AD Police to be a viable addition, which they've already passed. However, they're not setting specific stretch goals, but supposedly putting the question of which extras to include to a vote once the Kickstarter finishes. We'll see how that pans out.

I rewatched my 20-year-old PAL VHS of episode 1 for the first time in a while tonight, and good grief, that tape's in a sorry state. Picture quality isn't too terrible, but the audio is badly muted. I'm looking forward to the (eventual) upgrade.

So there's apparently a Yume Nikki manga

For those who don't know (and I'm not sure how well-known the RPG Maker or general freeware scene is in this community so just to be safe), Yume Nikki started as a freeware game made in RPG Maker (although its definitely not an RPG as there are no battles and no levelling up and no real "role-playing") about exploring a young girl's dreams. It's an interesting concept but the actual game could be a lot better.

Anyway, so far... not impressed with the manga. The artist is good at still life but he seems to suck at conveying movement. Just look at this page for example. It doesn't look like Madotsuki is running from the Toriningin, it looks like someone photographed them in mid-skip. (And that's seriously one dorky-looking running pose).

Still, gonna wait until at least a full volume worth of material is out before I pass judgment.
