I hated it. Quality game I guess but not that fun. Ikaruga would be a much better purchase.

Right then, I'll be sure to c heck with you in the future if I like a game. Would hate to be wrong.

Settle down a bit. It's fair you don't like it, but don't criticize others if they do. Why bother asking here if that's the case?

I think it was him that made that fantastic video of breezing through the last stage? That was awesome.

If you like fun games and you are prepared to overlook dated 2D visuals, then you OWE IT to yourself to GET THIS GAME.

Few shmups have given me as much fun as Bangai-O, easily one of the best games on Dreamcast. It's probably my most favourite game from Treasure, I love this game. There's so many levels (44 in total!) and the action gets damn crazy in the later levels. The puzzle strategy makes this game very addictive.

10/10 is my score, I'd say it's that good, get it now.

PS. For anyone who hasn't reached the last boss, he's a real bastard!!

Well ive read the manual now and spent most of last night playing it and....WOW! I think i finaly get it now. Destroying the bosses with the 400 max combo shots is the most satisfying thing ive done in gaming for a long time.

Of course, we all know that the N64 plays host to the best version. The DC iteration is somewhat watered down by comparison.

It's my understanding that the N64 version has slowdown and requires you to collect fruit to feed your Counter-meter (rather than by causing more destruction).

I was told (by mrmonkeyman's site) that the N64 version isn't worth it by comparison.

I'll keep my DC copy in any case.

The N64 version is simply a more challenging game than the DC iteration. I remember that having to collect fruit to power-up your smart-bomb made the N64 original much more tactical. There are lots of little differences, not least the presence of a power-up shop that is missing entirely from the DC release. I bought the DC version, and completed it, before I bought the N64 original. All I know is that I enjoyed the N64 original more. Oh, I think there are some scenes/characters in the N64 original that aren't in the DC version too. Control is superior on the N64 pad IIRC. Its been a while since I played either, maybe someone could chip-in with all the differences? I posted a list of all the differences on the old forum some years ago, but that seems to have been lost forever.

Well, I disagree. Sega does what Nintendon't in this case IMO.

Thanks for that link man!

There are more changes than I thought, I'd much rather stick with the superior DC version thanks. 8)

The DC graphics are a higher resolution, but this, IMO, does not necessarily make them better. I have played both versions to completion (unlike a lot of the folk who proclaim the later DC version to be superior). Its horses for courses, but the N64 original will always be the purer of the two in my mind. The DC version is a lot less cerebral, almost as if it was redesigned for a less descerning audience.

I tried the n64 version first and finished it before I got the DC version.
The n64 version might be "purer" but it's fun factor is not as "pure" as the DC one.
It's ok to be a nintendo fan-boy btw, just don't criticize the later version of the game because it's superior :P

Why would I criticise a game if it was superior? :? Answer - because I don't find it superior.

I wouldn't exactly call me a Nintendo fanboy. I have all the major consoles, so I'm of no particular persuasion. I love my DC as much as I love my N64. If I found the DC version superior, I would say so. The N64 version is alot more fun (for me) because it is a more tactical experience on the format for which it was originally designed. It is also a greater challenge, and as a person who enjoys gaming, I have to say that it is that which makes it more fun for me.

Trying to say one is better than the other is wrong. If you enjoy just going around blowing shit up, the DC wins because your meter is refilled from doing JUST THAT. If you want a more strategy, the N64 fills the shoes.

I love both versions. 8 out of 10
Easily worth £10 of anyones money.
It will split opinion though as it's certainly not a Shmup in the purest sense.
I'd recomend holding out for a cheap on ebay and giving it a go, if you don't like it you can easily re sell it. I often sell copys with a buy it now for £15

No. My saying that one is better than the other is perfectly valid insofar that it is my opinion, which I am completely entitled to. There is no right or wrong about it.

Just out of curiousity, would anyone consider Bangai-O to be a shmup? It is 2D and it scrolls. And the same thing goes for Cannon Spike. Even though it looks 3D, it still plays like a shmup. It reminds me alot of Zero Gunner 2, being able to rotate your aim and all.

Pressing the four buttons to shoot in that direction SUCKS on the DC. The shooting is better on the N-64 because you use the analog stick to fire in any given direction.
If the DC only had two analog sticks(?)...then again, I really don't care much for "Banger Oh" anyway...

And no, I wouldn't consider it to be a "Shmup" at all, but, if you consider Boulderdash with a gun a "shmup", well then good for you.

I just wished that every stage boss was challenging. For the most part, you're only dealing with defenseless cores. Maybe I need to try out the N64 version.

I don't care what the haters say, Bangai-O on the DC through a quality RGB CRT monitor is one of the purest gaming experiences I've ever had.

Game is hard though, stuck on level 23 but loving every minute of it. I often sit down with the intention of playing for 5 minutes which usually turns into hours.

Played the crap out of this game on the DC. I picked up the DS version for pennies and apparently it is an entirely different game. Not that I've really gotten around to playing it, but someday...

I got my Dreamcast for Bangai-O and Mars Matrix. It's probably why I started playing shooters so much, such is the power of Bangai-O. Game is amazing. The first time I released 400 missiles I was so happy. You have no idea how much I played this game.

The beautiful world of 2D! The tension is getting good! Three cheers for Bangai-O!
