Everyone knows how much I rave about "The Ultimate History of Video Games" by Steven L. Kent; is there a similar title that goes over what makes video game consoles-mostly looking for current-gen-tick? I typed in "video game hardware" Amazon, but mostly just got some books on video game design.
Would something like this fall under the discipline of Computer Science?
Any comprehensive book on video game hardware?...

Computer Engineering or Electrical Engineering more likely. There are some articles on previous, current, and next-generation game console hardware over at Ars Technica, if you can bother to look for them. I'm not aware of any books covering the subject, though, sorry.dave4shmups wrote:Would something like this fall under the discipline of Computer Science?

My friend, Bill Loguidice is writing a book about video games. Over 80 video game systems and computers will be in his book. He should be finish writing the book by March, and the book should be published by Dec. 2006. If you want more information about him, his maganize, or his book, go here: www.armchairarcade.comdave4shmups wrote:Everyone knows how much I rave about "The Ultimate History of Video Games" by Steven L. How stuff works has some decent articles. For example:
http://entertainment.howstuffworks.com/dreamcast1.htm -- How the dreamcast works.
I am not sure what kind of details you are looking for. My computer architecture textbook covers the sony playstation 2, but it is really technical and boring.

The book will be on amazon.com. The book publisher is O'Really Publishing (If I remember correctly).dave4shmups wrote:Thank you both so much for the info and links!Fighter17 wrote:My friend, Bill Loguidice is writing a book about video games. There's also an English version of that same book available. You can have a look at it here.dave4shmups wrote:Wow, well that certainly makes me want to learn German!Seven Force wrote:There's this book in German:

The book itself is quite good, although it contains quite a few (minor) errors. The new edition has some of the errors of the first edition corrected, but some others still remain (especially in the specs section at the end of the book). If you don't mind that, the book is fun to read and definitely worth a shot.
