I'm asking particularly for those games where holding fire does something else other than regular fire.
Normally, if tapping fire and holding fire do different things, what I do is:
(1) configure the buttons so that I have one button for autofire and another button for normal fire
(2) I keep the autofire button down while playing
(3) I hold the normal fire button down with the autofire button still pressed if I need to
However, for some games, this doesn't seem to work. In Psikyo's Strikers series for example, even if I configure autofire and normal fire to separate buttons, the autofire button still does the "hold fire" action when I hold it down instead of auto-firing.
Any idea on how to configure autofire for these games? FWIW, I'm using shmupmame4.

Shmupmame4, eh? Who knows, as I noticed that emulator does a lot of weirdo things. Anywho, I recall running into these issues to in that MAME too. How I solve it? Well, try setting up your autofire, then exiting that game completely and entering again (a reset might be enough?), and then it might magically work (weird)? Or, swap which does the autofire between the regular button and custom buitton (which was an option I used before the last option I just gave out. Course I didn't want to settle for this, so kept at it)). Or, you have to keep in mind that that when you set you autofire to on/auto/off, that the order of the buttons is wrong sometimes. ie. it might start with button 4, them, 3, 2, 1 (or any other mistake you might of made. ie. check very carefully). Gets me a few times.
So yeah. Any of these things should help you out, and I justy fired up the World version of Strikers 1945, and the autofire seems to work like how you have it set up (as it's the way I do it too) + I recall having the same issue with this game too. So, it's fixable without super special hacking skills. If it don't work, let me know.

Not sure what you wanted to point to, nZero, but the post you linked to explains exactly what I'm doing in my point #1 that I mentioned above.

Re: Autofire not configurable for some games in MAME?
I had that exact issue with Strikers 1999 a while ago, I think I fixed it by switching around my Custom button to be normal shot and the actual Shot 1 button to be autofire. I wasn't entirely sure why it was doing that, it was like after a charge shot it would forget I'd let go of the normal shot button or something. I think I realized it had built-in autofire on the third shot button after or something, though.
You may also need to turn down the actual autofire rate itself so it's slower, dunno.

Wow, this totally fixed it. I don't know why, but it did. Thanks!BareknuckleRoo wrote:I think I fixed it by switching around my Custom button to be normal shot and the actual Shot 1 button to be autofire.
