GameBoy hardware: jailbars through sprite layer - now w/pic!

Bah.

Bit of a long shot, but my original model Game Boy is acting up. Was totally fine before I stored it away, never had a problem with it, but now after taking it out it displays jailbars through the sprite layer on any cart I give it.

Wouldn't be such a big deal but I had this one back light modded ages ago, and it's in perfect cosmetic shape.

Don't know about cleaning the contacts, they're tough to reach, but then I'm not sure if this is the problem. The old slot dust blow doesn't seem to improve anything.

Pretty sure that's due to breaks in the ribbon cable between the screen and the main board. If so, RIP.

Sheeit, fer real? What could have happened, simple deterioration? It's been handled like a baby, never taken as much as a bump, just ended up like that all of a sudden.

Can I gut the ribbon cable from any old original GB and do a transplant op?

Haha, no. You can always reuse the case. Think of it as the perfect opportunity to upgrade your Gameboy with an EL panel.

Soooo, it looks you can solve this problem by running a soldering iron over the cable contacts!

Yeah, I did the above fix myself - took about 10 times longer to reassemble the damn thing.
