Royal Tramp II.
This movie was a little more serious than the first, and it didn't make me laugh as much as the first one(to be expected from a sequel) but I still enjoyed it and it did make me laugh. Still some very funny stuff like seeing the first Inn Chow comes to after being taken captive.
Next on my watching list is either one of the 18 kung-fu movies I bought in a collection today or my rental from the library, a chinese movie called Empire of Silver. Which oddly has Jennifer Tilly in it at some point(who knows how large a role she has, but was unexpected to see when watching the trailer).

Is that really what you got from the film? Oh wow. What I got was a little girl trying to grow up too fast with a crush on someone who protected her - there's never any reciprocation of this part of their relationship from Leon.

Nah, you misunderstand. Leon doesn't have sexual feelings towards Portman. I mean, the whole gimmick of the film is that Leon is, emotionally and socially, a 40-year-old child, while Natalie Portman is, emotionally and socially, a 12-year-old adult. The sexual tension is between the viewer and Portman, not Portman and Leon.

I know that I myself am not a pedophile or similar, but NP's characterization is indisputably sexual:




And I don't necessarily blame Luc Besson for portraying her that way. It raises interesting questions about the socially proscripted, but practically undeniable role of sexuality in pubescent females.

Or else, I'm a total dirtbag. Hopefully not.

I watched The Uninvited (1944) a couple nights ago. It is a great haunted house flick if you like old movies.

Yeah I didn't realize this either, until I realized that almost the entire cast of The Dark Knight trilogy were brits/irish, after seeing Rosencrantz & Guildenstern are Dead (Gary Oldman), Henry V (a Kenneth Branaugh joint) (a young Christian Bale), Peacock (Cillian Murphy), and Bronson (Tom Hardy). And obviously Liam Neeson is Irish and Michael Caine is English.

Highly recommend Bronson, btw. A Nicolas Winding Refn film.

I went and saw "Night of the Living Dead" via Rifftrax at the movie theater on Thursday night. If you want to enjoy the crap out of any movie you've seen, or *never* seen, this is the way to do it. Absolutely hilarious.

The guys are mostly onscreen all the time via three "windows" on the side of the screen, with occasional differing camera angles of the screen/guys and whatnot. Extremely inspired, and pulled off hilariously, even though it's happening in Nashville and you're wherever else. I've been twice, and while this trip wasn't quite as good as the first time, it's still very, *very* fun. Well worth the price of admission and then some.

Best Sci-Fi (although it strains the categorization) I've seen in a while. Go see it, in whatever number of dimensions you're capable of. Haven't been this juiced about sci-fi since Moon. The only sad thing is I don't think it'll hold up after multiple viewings (I went in completely blind). Still, it made my week.

Been a while since I posted here, so just some recent highlights (or at least interesting curiosities) since my last post in this thread, rather than every film.

- Ghosts with Shit jobs - Far from perfect, but an ace idea. In 2040 China is truly the dominant global superpower, while in Europe and the US people work low-end futuristic jobs (harvesting the webs of mutant giant spiders to sell as building material) and live in relative poverty to serve China.
- 237 - A wonderfully edited documentary about how far people go in reading conspiracy theories into the movie The Shining
- X Unknown - pretty ace old school sci-fi. Well worth a watch.

Rush

Closer to mainstream Hollywood style than might be expected; well made, but still deliberately shallow.
It's a traditional story about friendship and maturity and women, not about an exotic subject like Formula 1 racing.
In an interesting newspaper article I read, Ferrari personnel of the period lament the exaggeration of both main characters and the many inaccurate simplifications; but first-hand experience isn't required to recognize that the film takes many liberties with facts in the name of traditional storytelling patterns.
The rather good acting (special mention: Olivia Wilde), the great racing scenes, the stylish reconstruction of racing in the seventies, and the refreshing lack of silliness and bad humour are more than enough to recommend Rush, but don't expect too much depth.

^ Thanks for the review. It's as much as I expected from Ron Howard in top form. I've enjoyed quite a bit of his films for that finely-crafted-yet-still-typically-Hollywood kind of vibe (e.g. - Frost/Nixon, A Beautiful Mind, Apollo 13). So I'm excited for this, especially with some people saying that it might be his finest directorial effort yet.

Code 46 - Samantha Morton doesn't seem to be a lucky actress. The most miscarried Cracker episode (her very early - if not very first - appearance on screen) was when I saw her before... and now this.

I watched the Aggression Scale yesterday and I have to say that I haven't enjoyed a movie as much since I saw Dredd last year. I watched it cold (no trailer or plot details) after I read the description on Twitch's 15 Home Invasion Movies You Haven't seen and thought to myself "That sounds fucking awesome" and it was everything I hoped for. The best way to describe it is Home Alone if the Wet Bandits were mafia hitmen and Kevin McCallister was a psychopathic 13 year old combination of Rain Man and survival expert. Some pretty brutal violence and ingenius traps make this one of the better home invasion movies in recent memory, your enjoyment will likely vary depending on how much you like the premise.

I finally watched Repo Man. A great film, and I sense I'd need to watch it many more times before I understood much about it. For about the first half, I thought the Repo Men would reveal themselves as something otherworldly; something like the narrative of the Invisibles comics. Something like that was going on, right?

I loved the look. I loved the soundtrack. And I loved the plot's descent into chaos.

Oh my god yes. Repo Man is one of those movies that I could watch over and over and just not get tired of. It's so perfect. A movie with this sort of thing going on has to be amazing. It's the most 80s movie ever.

I was expecting something more typical/ordinary. Repo Man manages to expertly juggle that classic 80s mainstream cinema feel with something peculiar and distinct.

And, yeah - that clip is a great example of the film's very special approach!

In Bruges IS a great film. And if you haven't seen it, I'd highly recommend his brother's film "The Guard". The movie has the same type of feel starring Brendan Gleason, Don Cheadle, and Mark Strong.


I've been trying to get through Tarkovsky's filmography lately, and I just finished The Mirror (Zerkalo) yesterday evening. It's definitely something I'm going to have to watch again.

"Monsters University" recently came out on Red Box, so I picked that up over the weekend. Watched it with the wife Friday night. Watched it with my son Saturday. Enjoyable both times. Seemed more enjoyable than "Toy Story" or "Cars" series. Good moral to the story without any blurring (so many kids movies have retarded morals like "hey kids, it's ok to run off and disobey your parents, so long as you do something impressive enough that they forget!"
