I'm surprised by the Raizing love. Maybe it would be interesting to compare against CAVE

Psikyo just a hair over Raizing.
Toaplan would probably be #3.

Re: Favorite non-Cave arcade shmup developers?
I think it is the about time this site arranges a top-shmup developers voting, similar to the top 25.
That is, where one can vote on any shmup developer, and on more developers than just one.
One problem though is that there is still a lot confusion about whether some of these games were developed or published by a certain company.
And I think the voting would be more valid if it was preceded by comprehensive, although not necessarily exhaustive, list of developers and their games.

My top three would probably be Raizing, Psikyo, and Toaplan.
For a "not really top tier but I have a lot of nostalgia for" pick, Kaneko. Cyvern is amazing, but everything else is meh. Air Buster was my first arcade 1cc though (in an actual arcade no less).

I love pretty much all of Toaplan's shmups.
A few from Psikyo and Taito (seriously the latter have done LOADS).
A couple of Raizing
Comparison with Cave: only really played and enjoyed DonPachi and DoDonPachi anyway.

Wow, Raizing ran away with that poll pretty quick all of a sudden...
Re: Favorite non-Cave arcade shmup developers?
I chose LieZing but I really should've voted for Toaplan

I've been considering slotting it in somewhere next year, amongst other things.DMC wrote:I think it is the about time this site arranges a top-shmup developers voting, similar to the top 25.

Live to fly, fly to live, it's all very orthodox

Not an arcade developer.ratikal wrote:Man, wheres Qute at?

For me, as a novice shmupper, it's
early Psikyo > late Psikyo > Raizing > Cave > the rest
And for the oldschool stuff:
Namco > Nichibutsu > the rest
early Psikyo > late Psikyo > Raizing > Cave > the rest

Re: Favorite non-Cave arcade shmup developers?
The only good non Cave game is Dimahoo, so I have to go with Raizing.
Re: Favorite non-Cave arcade shmup developers?
For me it has to be Toaplan.
Without them Cave/Raizing/*Takumi Might not have been what we know today.

Maybe you should make a new poll: Favorite non-Cave, non-Raizing arcade shmup developers?heisenbergman wrote:Wow, Raizing ran away with that poll pretty quick all of a sudden...

Nifty: You can count on my support!

Wow, this is a though one. I really love Irem, Konami, Raizing, Seibu, Taito, and Toaplan.
Well, Seibu only made the Raiden games, so, lets, leave them out. (Though I love my Raiden games)
Irem I need to play more of ther other games to know for sure, so out.
Taito. Haven't got into Darius series yet. So out.
Raizing I think may be the pinicle of vert genre? But I'm thiniking I should save their games for a bit later would work out better? (That, and they seem to be winning in the poll np).
Toaplan I just discovered rock more then I initially thought. But...
Let's just say Konami cause Gradius III & rest of AC series is my fave. The rest of their AC shmups I've tried (Trigon, Xexex, A-Jax, MX 500, Thunder Cross) seem really good too? Too bad they've stopped making shmups. (Don't say Otomedius).

wow, I can't believe I am one of two who voted for Taito, there is something in the water.EmperorIng wrote:My vote goes to Taito, because of their excellent mixture of pick-up-and-play game style in their shmups, mixed with often wholly unique, bizarre, surreal, and memorable aesthetic choices.
After that it would be Psikyo and Konami, with Takumi after them. I may love Soukyogurentai, but I don't think Raizing games are all that hot. I just haven't 'gotten' them.

I'd vote for Seibu any day. (although I do like Taito's music; Ashura Blaster, Gun Frontier, etc.) Raiden DX tops any other shmup I've played from any of those other developers, enough said.
