Wow, I must watch this Honeamise film, it's mentioned so many times.
not much experience with anime/manga, but let's go:
Anime:
Yu Yu Hakusho - I was 12 years old, and I loved it. This series got a sensational dubbing when first aired here in Brazil, I can remember some of the lines to this day, Koenma was hilarious.
I don't have any exposition to anime series besides what was aired on national tv, lol.
Film
1. Akira - My dream is to watch this movie in a theater like the one where Gaijin Punch goes to, with those robust sound equipments. The soundtrack to this movie is from another realm, more so than even the spectacular visuals.
Akira is one of my most watched films, I lost count already.
2. Grave of the Fireflies - Rando, this film kicked my ass too. I actually watched a second time just to test my manliness, and got my ass kicked again.
3. Perfect Blue
4. A Viagem de Chihiro (I don't know the original name or the english one)
I've seen Ghost in the Shell recently, and while I liked it enough, I thought I would be more impressed. Maybe I would have been more impacted by it if I had seen it during the nineties.
Manga
1. HunterxHunter - There's something magical about it's simplicity. I read up to the Greedy Island conclusion, and it was the most fun I had reading a kiddie story.
2. Akira
3. Domu
4. Rurouni Kenshin
Death Note was good up to a certain part. I disliked much of it afterwards but persevered to the end.

Re: Your Top 5 Anime Series/Anime Films and Manga Series
I've been using this thread to fill in the gaps of (ostensibly) good anime I've somehow missed or otherwise forgotten about. Saw Venus Wars and Windaria this week. Venus Wars was nicely animated, but a bit tiring by the end, and the story was more interesting in the first half. Glad I saw it though. I loved the sumptuously colorful animation for Windaria, and the story was a charming if wholly forced tragedy. Funny to see ugetsu monogatari surface again.
In the queue thanks to this thread, Patlabor, Dagger of Kamui, and Bubblegum Crisis. Have to think about my own top 5 a bit more. Tenshi no Tamago is certainly #1, hehe.

Re: Your Top 5 Anime Series/Anime Films and Manga Series
I definitely agree with Venus War. Absolutely love the animation, character design, and overall feel through about 2/3s of the movie. I can't help but feel like the end sort of falls off the track and loses pace a bit. Still, I definitely love it, and wholeheartedly recommend Discotek's amazingly clean and crisp DVD re-release in the states. Looks absolutely gorgeous. Easily one of the nicest transfers for older anime I have ever seen on DVD.

yep the art is really amazing I think - especially the chase scenes in the post apocalyptic shopping mall area.
so much detail in every frame (but still great movement).
