Zombie Shmup! \o/ (The Way They Die)

Post by mice »

Sell out! Or something... :D

The screens don't do the carnage justice, I tell you.
Graphics by David Nash, http://davidnashart.blogspot.com, who I "found" at the pixeljoint forum.

Still working on the score mechanics/system and so, but it plays quite good if I can say so myself.
It's a horizontal one with you being able to fire left and right (if you can't tell from the shots).
Now you can have a pistol, uzi and shotgun and you have a melee attack available with its own meter.

Xblig and OUYA planned. Xbox version runs without slowdown, the ouya one, not so much. :)

YEEEEEESSS!!

I have been waiting for a game where you shoot zombies on XBLIG for so long!! Thank you for answering my prayers!

...............

Okay, blatant mockery aside which probably only you will get anyway -- this looks really damned good dude. Are you gonna finish it and if so, got a release date? :)

For scoring, why not look at the way the multiplier is handled in Pink Sweets arrange? Short bursts of killing large groups = muchos points. Multiplier could deplete extremely quickly so stage long chaining is not encouraged to save you design headaches... but herding a bunch of enemies and then gunning them down would be cool.

So for instance, zombie is worth say 100 points, multiplier goes up by 1 after each zombie killed and maxes out at say 10 (for example)

group of 10 zombies = 5500 pts
group of 50 zombies = 45500 pts

just an idea.. probably would need some adjustments :)

Not a bad idea!
Suits a zombie game much better than the coin-collecting (gunbird 2 like) system that's in there right now.

Edit: Should be finished by 1st of feb...

Keep the coins as a nice "side dish" as Trap would put it :)

No sense ditching them completely!

True, all games should feature coins.

The look of this really reminds me of NARC in a way.

Zombies are pretty played out, yeah (especially on XBLIG); but I think that's partially from people using them lazily, barely exploiting their full fun potential and banking on simply having ZOMBIE in the game title for generating sales.

The positive side of that is there's now shedloads of examples how not to do it. Take Zombie Shotgun Massacre for example : It's got some nicely polished art, pretty decent sfx and animation and violently slaughtering zombies with a shotgun wielding bikini model is as fun as it should be. It however completely sabotages all of it's good qualities with an astounding level of repetition caused by the most asinine level design ever devised. You literally walk from one end of the level to the other, then all the way back, and repeat.. it's enough to make you wish for undeath. That one might be more of a case of shamelessly suckering in trial players more than rudimentary zombie fun failure, though. >_>

True, lots of NARC actually. But (at present) not push scroll and no back-track.

But, honestly; there's not a proper zombie shmup in existens, is it? Name one. Twin-stick stuff don't count.
Zombie Shotgun Massacre is more of a side-scrolling beat'em up. She just happens to have a shotgun.

And I did a lot of asking around; zombies won't stop trending, like ever.

This is a deathsmiles-like hori stg, just with zombies in it. Yep, there you have it. :D

Yeah, it's closer to something like Alien Storm (and I'm being very generous there!) than a shmup, I just meant zombie related stuff in general. If I got my hands on it, it'd probably be pretty close, though.

If you do count (older) twin stick games, the club-wielding cannon fodder in Smash TV could be considered fairly zombie-like (gory deaths, horde tactics, slow movement, etc.)

One of the most popular xblig games (I MAED A GAM3 W1TH Z0MBIES 1N IT!!!1) is a smash tv shmup.
But, as I said, I don't count those as proper shmups...

David is working against limitations, yes. And he's the one doing the music as well, forgot to say that.
I think it's beautiful! It's a real joy to start the game up and test the latest impl, just because of the gfx. :)
