to you, sure. i'm not a giant fan either. and guys, he's right; you have to tap fairly fast to get the best fire rate, and this has definitely annoyed and will continue to annoy people even after they have autohotkey all set up, simply because of the principle.
yet the principle is good. the point is endurance, just like loops and the lack of pausing (aside from its purpose in an arcade environment). it is not inherently a "flaw" or any other negative and presumably fact-based noun.
I have hundreds of PC shmups, but thanx to this thread I've found out some new for me which are very interesting. The best: Flying Red Wine Barrel ~ A Diary of Little Aviator, MEGLILO and Zen-Ichi.
Oh, nobody has still mentioned Bike Banditz. Great japanese horizontal shmup, with cartoon graphics, lots of bullets on screen and a very cool multidirectional shooting system.
Another very good horizontal is Force Majeure, but I don't know if it's free or not. I just have a demo. Amazing graphics (Irem style) and music! It also features focus movement.

I believe the keyboard controls never change from the default so changing the controls only works for controllers.
Hey, BareknuckleRoo! (SoR3 rules!) Get X-Padder to map whatever keyboard button where ever you want on a gameplad. Will come in very handy from time to time too. ie. Just downloaded Raiden 3 PC and for some reason it's one of those games where it don't register my D-Pad but Analot Stick instead. So I mapped it to up and down keyboard then mapped it to D-Pad on my gamepad via X-Padder.
I already use Joy2Key whenever I want to use a gamepad/stick and the program doesn't support it natively. What I wanted was to be able to change keyboard mappings for games that don't support custom keyboard mapping so that I don't need to play with a gamepad and, as Erppo suggested, AutoHotkey allows you to do so quickly and easily, as well as setup autofire for shmups that don't have it built in. Thanks though.

All the games you mentioned, while DOUJIN are NOT FREE. Is true that you can find them rather easy, but that doesnt mean they are actually free. that said, i agree, Bike Banditz is a great hori game, and Zen-Ichi is a good game, and i dig it's graphic style a lot (i like retro-like looks).

either set your monitor to 60Hz, or open up screen.txt and change the second number to 1.
this is actually how plus works too, it just has a popup box for the screen thing.
