Project Root (PC/Vita)

Post by Hal1 »

Project Root is a brand new top-down shmup by Argentinian indie developer OPQAM. One selling point there is the free camera system that you control your moving vertical-facing craft by yawing the camera. Instead for score, Project Root is objective-based, and in this case achievements may suffice for completionists. Project Root has 8 open-world levels to conquer. The default weapon's trajectory is fixed, however, to make up for this weakness, powerful but limited weapons such as homing missiles and rockets, and shield and flare defenses may suffice. All of these are upgradeable by in-level powerups or by purchases using experience points.

The story:
"An evil corporation named Prometheus Corporation has been trusted with much of the worlds energy resources. Its president Demetrio Watts is masking his plan that may bring the end of the world with lots of displays of public honor. You play as one of the unknown few rebels that know President Demetrio Watts and his corporation's true motives."

Reminds me of the classic Strike series. Will buy for sure. ... Graphics look pretty cool too (ie. like Ray series).

This sounds terrible.

Then I will never create threads about bad/mediocre shmups anymore. The bad shmups discussion in general should deserve a new thread.

I will definitely refrain from spamming this forum with nonsense. Last sentence of OP replaced with OPQAM's official website because of this...

BACK TO ON-TOPIC: I just saw the concept art and I will just say for now that they are decent to gorgeous.

It's been tried already, sort of.

But yeah, that sounds horrible. If the bullets moved anything at more than a snail's pace and had any sort of complex patterns, it'd more disorienting to play than anything. A free roam shmup where the ship itself changes direction to shoot (Score Rush style controls) but the view stays fixed overhead would make more sense.

It's not a bad game, really. There are some odd sentences in spots (likely due to some translation issues) and it feels a bit generic in ways. Plus, there are some decent sized stretches where you just don't fight anything as you fly around the levels. Other than that, it's a competent free-roaming shmup-like game . The graphics are good, the sound effects are fine, the story's alright, and the music doesn't offend or get you rockin' out (it's not badly made, it's just not all that memorable much of the time).

Shame the developers seem to have already walked away from it.
