Loaded and Re-loaded on the PS1-Classics, or garbage?...

Post by dave4shmups »

That's the question that I have about both of these games. I recently saw a review of Loaded on Youtube, in which the reviewer complained about the lighting and the controls. Re-loaded is supposedly even worse, and I haven't seen or read any positive reviews of the game. It is on the Playstation Store, and it's cheap, but I don't want to waste any money on it if it's a lousy game.

Loaded was one of the games that came with my used Saturn when I bought it off ebay. To this day, it's the only game I ever threw in the trash rather than letting it collect dust on my shelf. Go figure.

Loaded isn't a stellar game, but I quite liked it. I didn't have any problem with the controls and the combination of mastering crowd control + managing your limited health supplies make it reasonably interesting for survival play. It definitely has some problems, though, like the occasionaly sloppy level design and pitifull boss battles.

Re-Loaded, though, is an unplayable piece of shit. Everything is slowed down to a crawl, cheap hits are everywhere, the graphics are horrible, bad coding (The first level requires you to flip over rocks to get items needed to progress, but touching them can randomly kill you... etc).

Playable, gory, local co-op (played it on Saturn). Can't say I enjoyed it any less than Project Overkill, but Apocalypse (with analogue sticks) is miles better.
P.S. Best co-op PSX game of the sort is probably the Diablo port.

Okay - how can we not love a low frame rate dungeon gauntlet romp with extreme fire power?

for the time it was a good stab at something - in truth it wasn't fantastic but it was at least a prod at differentiating itself - and for that i applaud them.

While some make take an extreme view on Loaded, I would say it's just a decent game. As mentioned it's Gauntlet and sometimes it can be dark but what's wrong with that? I bought it used for $2 on PS1 and I can't say it was a mistake. If anything try the PS1 game first in emulation then decide. It's not great but it's not terrible either.

I don't think it was generic in 1995. That was three years before Gauntlet Legends and Apocalypse, four years before Silent Bomber. By the way, I wonder how the Japanese liked it (and whether we owe Loaded the likes of Neo Contra and PS2 Alien Syndrome remake).
Can you think of at least one Japanese co-op dungeon game from mid-to-late nineteen-nineties?

Girl at school : "hey I heard you were getting loaded."
Me : I rented it. Me and a buddy are going to try the co-op."
Girl : "Wait. What?"
Me : It's a video game. On playstation."
Girl : "Oh. I thought you meant you were getting drugs."

Girl never showed interest in me again. This actually happened.

Well, Gauntlet Legends was Gauntlet (1985), only in 3d. If you're looking for a Japanese co-op dungeon crawl, off the top of my head I can think of Arcus Odyssey (1990?) and Dungeon Explorer 1 & 2 (around then too). I'm sure there are others given how popular games like Wizardry were there. And there are a lot of other Gauntlet clones as well from other places, such as The Chaos Engine (which I would recommend).

Loaded was artistically generic-- mid-90s "twisted" art style. You know, blood-spattered insane evil clowns, etc, like a poor-man's Spawn. Pointlessly gory and dark like everything back then. Amateur hour to be sure.

I don't know if I'd describe games like Neo Contra as a dungeon crawl. It's more of a top view run n gun, and there's no shortage of those coming from Japan.

Bring it back!!serious lack of lack of imagination these days; and this need to justify weird stuff, like the current crop of superhero films.

Nothing amateur about that , its worth the money for that art alone.

Stuff is way to sterile/technical, arty farty, "mature" these days ...

I think what set it apart at least for me was the number of enemies + the extreme firepower it dolled out - in that sense it was a much more violent feeling that the Gauntlet war of attrition. Might be my mind playing tricks on me as it's years since i played it of course

Music was good and then excellent when the couple of PWEI tracks kicked in.

I have a bizarre pseudo-nostalgia for that mid 90s period when PWEI, The Prodigy, Chemical Bros et al were popping up on game soundtracks...

3D is what wasn't generic in 1995 (a year before Tomb Raider and Quake for crying out loud). I'm pretty sure Loaded is the first action game to ever sport such an engine.

Oh, there was tons of full textured 3d on computer if you just want to count 3d games of any genre. For realtime dungeon games, Ultima Underworld is probably the first textured polygon one and it was 1992 IIRC (maybe even 1991..?).

Even on console, you had the 3do, Jag and 32X a couple years before the PSX and Saturn. I even remember some top-down 3d games that were kind of run n gunny+exploration, but I'm having trouble thinking of specific names.

Ultima Underworld is FPP. By "such an engine" I meant bird's-eye view.

Let me guess - Expendable (1998)?

No, way before, on PC. They weren't great :) I consider 1999 to be super late in gaming history BTW.

Anyway, adding 3d into a game like that IMO wasn't anything but going with trends at the time. Everything was 3d then, and games got slammed in reviews if they weren't, making it by necessity as well as for the novelty of it. Loaded definitely wasn't anything that stuck out as different to me when it was released, any more than the NES would've been considered innovative for being in color instead of B&W. I mean, even Red Zone on Genesis has a top view polygon part where you're walking around the base...

Crusader, Project Overkill, Zax: The Alien Hunter, GTA and - last but not least - Diablo I&II. 2D fared just fine, bird's-eye view-wise.

The first GTA's actually 3d. And a lot of those are also on the PC where isometric still reigned supreme for those kinds of games (more strategic kind of stuff). Something like Crusader was pretty out of place on console. I remember a lot of those being slammed-- even GTA on PSX had a lot of bad write-ups I remember reading.

Hardly. I remember some Genesis Batman game using a perspective trick like that. GTA is about as 3D as Soukyuugurentai.

The Genesis Batman game uses a raster scroll trick ala Street Fighter II. GTA is using textured polygons, including sloped polygons on occasion. And IIRC Souky's got polygons but really only on that first level, on the towers.

Whereas Loaded does LEGO dudes not unlike games of today do them. I don't think it's been standard before the likes of Warcraft III, Dungeon Siege and Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance. Which is not to say it never happened in the nineties (Darkstone, Myth), but generic it was not. (Metal Gear Solid happened in 1998.)
As for the violence... People well past their teens who think games like GTA or Loaded owe them anything need a hug.
