Blue Wish Resurrection slowdown?

Post by heisenbergman »

Does anyone experience BWR slowing down in parts when they play it?

On Hell, it slows down almost half the time. On Heaven, it slows down very rarely, but it still happens.

I'd like to think that my laptop is relatively competent...

CPU: Intel Core i7-3610QM (2.3GHz)
RAM: 8GB DDR3
HDD: 750GB HDD
VGA: Nvidia GeForce GT 640M 2GB DDR3
OS: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium

...but all clues point towards my specs not being able to handle the sheer volume of things happening on the screen.

AFAIK the slowdown is an intended mechanic. According to http://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.php?t=20365 WAIT toggles it on and off.

Back when games used to run on very limited hardware they would slow down when there was a lot of stuff on the screen because the hardware just wasn't able to push it faster. Of course those parts of the game were also pretty difficult (more stuff to dodge/shoot), so the slowdown was kind of nice as it helped out the player in the hard parts of the game. Because of that it kind of stuck as a game element, and developers artificially implement it even though the hardware is capable of moving everything at full speed.

Oh LOL, well damn, I've been had.

I turned WAIT off and the slowdown indeed disappeared.

Now that I know the nature of the slowdown I'm not sure if I want that on or off. Haha.

I always play games with wait on. I mean, come on, the designer did compesate the difficulty for it so it's balanced with slowdown in mind. ie. You dare tell me Gradius III AC should be played without wait?! And I'm not even talking setting to harder difficulty or higher loops yet either. (Why recovering in Gradius III AC is so hard.... ditto for SNES one too on higher loops, where all higher loop difficulty does is jack up the bullet & enemy speed... what a lame way to turn up difficulty in my opinion)
